In the Parc Naturel Régional des Alpilles, Les Peupliers is just outside the beautiful Provençal village of Eygalières.
Just off the country road leading to the village, you can walk to Eygalières in around fifteen minutes. It is a village full of charm – no wonder a handful of A-list celebrities have chosen to buy properties here away from the prying eye of the paparazzi. There is a grocery store, boulangerie and butchers as well as lovely restaurants and cafes. Explore the narrow pretty lanes, passing fountains and gorgeous houses, and walk to the top of the village for amazing views. The Friday morning market is a particular delight with its Provençal ambience.
Just a short drive away is the wonderful town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence (12km), also home to a fantastic weekly market as well as excellent restaurants, galleries and art studios. Follow the Van Gogh trail around the town and finish off at the Monastère Saint-Paul de Mausole where the artist spent the last days of his life.
One of France’s classified ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, Les Baux-de-Provence (21km), is another picturesque village to visit – head early or late to avoid the summer crowds as it is such an idyllic place with its impressive castle and stunning surroundings. Close by, Maussane-les-Alpilles is perfect for lunch out or a stroll around its little shops – this village produces some of France’s best olive oil.
A beautiful golf course can be found near Les Baux-de-Provence and this region is also perfect for horse-riding, rock-climbing, cycling and wonderful walks through glorious Provençal landscapes.
Avignon (28km) is an easy drive north, home to yet more fantastic restaurants, vibrant markets and historic sights including the incredible Palais des Papes, a UNESCO World heritage site.
The captivating Luberon region can be reached in around half an hour. Visit iconic hilltop villages such as Oppède and Ménerbes or head further towards the lavender fields and Gordes (33km), another one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ and much loved by Van Gogh.
