Close to the sophisticated seaside town of Deauville, this beautiful Normandy abode is exceptional in every way, not just for its wonderful sea vistas and direct access to a vast sandy beach below.
Maison Des Coquillages sleeps up to 30 guests across its two houses, which both date back to the 19th century and have been completely renovated in recent years. The large domaine offers ample opportunities to gaze out towards the English channel whilst the garden leads all the way down to a glorious beach just west of Deauville.
Starting off with the villa, known as the ‘Abbey’, here you can truly embrace the character and beauty of Normandy. Every room has been tastefully decorated, many with views of the sea. Sit back in the elegant lounge, watch TV in the comfort of the cosy library and dine together in the conservatory-style veranda directly overlooking the sea. The kitchen is every cook’s dream or you may prefer to hire a chef for part of your stay. You can sleep restfully in one of the nine bedrooms, eight of which feature king-size beds, most with en suite bathrooms.
There is an extra bedroom in a little beach chalet set within the villa’s grounds. Another appealing feature is the fitness and relaxation centre with gym equipment, a massage room, sauna and a jacuzzi overlooking the sea. Guests can also access a shared tennis court next door.
Next we come to the characterful ‘Cloister’ house with its charming exterior and gorgeous garden. As well as a pretty lounge and modern kitchen-diner facing the sea, there are five bedrooms on the garden and first floor, each one with its own bathroom and most with an adjoining single room with a desk. Outside, children will love the little play area set amongst the terraced grounds whilst everyone will adore the outdoor dining terrace and bar with yet more magnificent views towards the sea. To top it all off, climb the steps to the indoor heated swimming pool alongside the jacuzzi where you can slide open the window and appreciate the sea breeze as you relax.
Wander down the garden to the beach below for long walks, swimming and playing in the sand and dine out at the seasonal beachside restaurant just 500m away. In the other direction, following the road that connects Deauville to Villers-sur-Mer, come across a pretty Normandy seaside village with attractive shops and restaurants just over 1km away.
Deauville is only 2.5km by car - the energetic can of course walk, passing elegant villas, vibrant restaurants and the new cultural centre, Les Franciscaines, en route (or simply stroll along the beach of course!). The 19th century seaside resort has gained quite a reputation for its gastronomy with its high-end restaurants and atmospheric market which takes place beneath the half-timbered halles – no wonder Parisians flock here at the weekend! It’s also known for horse-racing, polo, film festivals and its fantastic sandy beach with colourful sun umbrellas and deckchairs backed by an iconic boardwalk.
Cross over the estuary to Trouville-sur-Mer, another upmarket resort with impressive architectural and a superb fish market, or drive a little further afield to discover the maritime history of charming Honfleur by the River Seine.
Elsewhere, the D-Day Normandy Landing beaches of Arromanches-les-Bains and Omaha Beach can be reached in less than ninety minutes, perhaps combined with a visit to Bayeux or Caen. Closer to home, potter around local seaside resorts such as romantic Cabourg and picturesque Houlgate, both part of the captivating Côte Fleurie that has inspired writers and artists over the years from Proust to Claude Monet.

Set back from a vast sandy beach, the beautiful Maison Des Coquillages and its grounds enjoy glorious sea views just 2.5km from the heart of the charming seaside town of Deauville, so loved by Parisians who visit the sophisticated resort at weekends and holidays.
Caen-Ouistreham’s ferry terminal is a 40-minute drive or if arriving by train there is a direct service from Paris Saint-Lazare to Trouville-Deauville taking just over two hours. Deauville has its own private airport (Saint-Gatien Airport) or you can fly into one of the three Parisian airports, each one around a two to three hour drive away.
The grand villa and historic house can be found on the road that connects Deauville to Villers-sur-Mer and there are amazing garden and sea views from the rooms that face the English channel as well as the large grounds. Walk down to the very end of the garden and you have direct access to the far end of a spacious beach. There is a beachside restaurant within 500m (seasonal opening times/dates apply) and an attractive promenade a little further along – the perfect spot for an early morning walk.
Following the road in the other direction, there is a small seaside village around 1km away with restaurants, café-bars and attractive shops as well as another beautiful beach – this typically Normandy village is very pretty and there’s a lovely ambience in the summertime.
Deauville (2.5km) is of course the star attraction of this area (as well as neighbouring Trouville-sur-Mer across the estuary). The picturesque seaside resort which dates back to the 19th century has gained a reputation for its gastronomic fare, serving excellent sea-food specialities in many of its restaurants, and its glitzy shopping opportunities. The colourful sun umbrellas and Deauville’s decked boardwalk and beach huts are now iconic whilst its huge sandy beach is wonderful at any time of year.
Visitors also come to Deauville for its horse-racing, polo, casino, film festivals and vibrant cultural scene with the opening of Les Franciscaines cultural centre only 2km from Maison Des Coquillages. Deauville’s bustling market comes alive beneath the half-timbered halls, open every morning in the height of the summer. Even when the market isn’t taking place, it’s a joyful and atmospheric place to enjoy a coffee or evening meal.
Trouville-sur-Mer (4.5km) is also home to high-end shops and restaurants, a grand casino and fantastic beach with a promenade for lovely walks overlooking the sea. The town’s architecture dates back to the 19th century and the town is especially famous for its fish market which is open every day. Further along the coast, Honfleur (20km) is another Normandy gem with its pretty port dating back to the 17th century, elegant architecture and charming medieval lanes filled with shops, cafes and restaurants.
Elsewhere in Normandy, spend the day in the vibrant city of Le Havre (45km) by crossing the Seine via the impressive Pont de Normandie, or venture west towards the moving D-Day Landing beaches - Arromanches-les-Bains (80km) and Omaha Beach (95km) are less than a 90-minute drive away. A day out on this part of the Normandy coastline could also be combined with a visit to historic Bayeux (75km) or the beautiful city of Caen (43km).
The Region
History and gastronomy go hand-in-hand in Normandy, making it a great choice if culture and fine dining are what you’re looking for in a holiday! There’s still plenty on offer besides the food and tales of yesteryear, however – you can take a tour around some of the beautiful inland towns and villages or head to the coast, where you’ll find a mixture of wide sandy beaches and rugged, romantic cliffs.
