There’s a charming, laid-back ambience at 18th century Bastide Hercule, a blue-shuttered villa with a private swimming pool, just a short walk from a little bay, restaurants and marina on the French Riviera between Carqueiranne and Toulon.
A fine holiday home for spending relaxed times with family or friends, guests will appreciate the bastide’s characterful interiors with its double-height hallway, tiled floors, inviting lounge and cosy family kitchen. Somewhat vintage in style, it was renovated by an Italian count and English Lord in the mid 20th century - it was even rumoured that Brigitte Bardot once danced the night away at one of the owners' parties! Nowadays, up to 14 guests can sleep across six individually styled bedrooms which are split across two wings of the first floor, ranging from a spacious double with frescoed ceilings to a simple children’s quad room.
At Bastide Hercule it’s all about outdoor living with its delightful al-fresco dining table beneath the vine-covered pergola, the rustic garden with Mediterranean plants and shaded tables as well as the glorious outdoor lounge, hammock in the trees and children’s play area. Not to mention the swimming pool for lazy summer afternoons.
Set in a wooded residential area alongside other holiday homes, wander down the narrow country lane and steps to reach a gorgeous little bay, marina and a small handful of summer restaurants. Keen walkers take note that the hiking paths of the Colle Noire Massif are also very close by. There are other idyllic bays dotted along this part of the coastline and it’s only a 7km drive to the pretty port at Carqueiranne and the swaying pine trees at Plage des Pins Penchés.
Find a wealth of watersports along the Giens Peninsula, take a boat ride across to the beautiful Îles d'Hyères, soak up the charm of Hyères and spend the day exploring the maritime city of Toulon with its historic architecture, bustling markets, wonderful restaurants and family-friendly beach at Plage du Mourillon.

On the French Riviera between Carqueiranne and Toulon, Bastide Hercule is set in a residential wooded area within a short walk of a pretty bay and marina with a handful of summer restaurants.
Just stroll out of your gated grounds and wander along the country lane, passing a neighbouring holiday residence and other villas, then you will reach a set of fairly steep steps that will take you down to the sea. Continuing on, there is a little pebbly bay and a small yet bustling marina with a handful of seasonal restaurants. The sunsets from this bay are especially impressive.
A second small beach, grocery store and watersports centre is around 1km away by car (if walking, part of the road does not have a pavement). There are plenty more beaches dotted along this coastline reached within a short drive (some via forested paths and/or steps), all with gorgeous clear water perfect for swimming and snorkelling. An easily accessible family-friendly option is Plage du Mourillon (10km), the city beach in Toulon, with sandy shores and summer watersports. In the other direction is the Giens Peninsula (17km) for wind-surfing and kite-surfing on one side and gentler water-based activities on the other.
From the end of the Giens Peninsula, catch a ferry or taxi boat across to the very beautiful Îles d'Hyères. The main island, Porquerolles, is car-free so hire a bike from the port and cycle to your hearts content across the gorgeous landscapes of vineyards, olive trees, pine forests and eucalyptus trees, coming across idyllic Caribbean-style beaches.
Back on the mainland, find restaurants, bars and other handy amenities in the local village of Le Pradet (3km) or continue onwards to the great city of Toulon (12km). Toulon is a fantastic day out with its harbour, boat tours, bustling indoor and outdoor markets, excellent restaurants, museums and the cable-car ride up to Mont Faron.
Beyond Toulon are other lovely seaside towns and resorts of the French Riviera such as La Seyne-sur-Mer (18km), Les Sablettes (21km) with its summer beachside markets, characterful Sanary-sur-Mer (23km) known for its characterful harbour and beaches for watersports and the authentic French Riviera town of Bandol (29km).
Heading east, you could even venture as far as Saint-Tropez and Pampelonne Beach for a fantastic day out, around a 80-minute drive away. Keen cyclists also note that the villa is close to the Toulon – Saint-Tropez cycling route whilst there are also plenty of coastal walking opportunities nearby.
