On the banks of the river Dronne in the Périgord Vert region, this house enjoys a beautiful setting in northern Dordogne, within walking distance from a characterful village with restaurants and just 10km from the enchanting town of Brantôme.
You can stroll down the country road to the nearby village where you will find a handful of restaurants, a bakery and grocery store as well as an atmospheric market on a Sunday morning. The origins of the old part of the village date as far back as the 10th century and you can visit its Renaissance château and medieval fortress – climb to the top for some wonderful views. Also within a short walk is a canoeing and kayak centre which offers half-day excursions along the Dronne.
There are further canoeing opportunities in the beautiful town of Brantôme (10km), also well-known for its incredible abbey as well as its picturesque location. Often referred to as the Venice of Périgord, enjoy its fine restaurants and pretty shops or simply take a tranquil walk along the riverside. Friday morning is a nice time to visit with its bustling market selling delicious seasonal produce.
Market lovers will also adore Périgueux (28km) on a Wednesday and Saturday morning where you will find all sorts of regional specialities whilst Ribérac, also around half an hour ago, hosts a Friday morning market, known to be one of the best in the region (expect black truffles, plenty of foie gras and walnuts).
Perhaps combine Ribérac with Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, or head further north to the pretty village of Saint-Jean-de-Côle, a gorgeous place to potter around with its ochre coloured houses and tiled roofs.
This region is fantastic for horse-riding with a centre within a short drive and walking, especially in the heart of the Périgord Vert countryside with its forests, rolling hills and streams. Further north, the Parc Naturel Régional Périgord-Limousin, about an hour away, is perfect for both mountain biking and cycling, or slightly closer to home discover the Voie Verte cycling trail following the former railway line between Saint-Pardoux-la-Rivière and Thiviers.
The Region
The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.
The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with famous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.
The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.
