The village of Tinj in Zadar County is the perfect holiday location for those who love to be around nature. There are several popular cycle routes in the area - perfect for exploring the stunning Croatian countryside, as well as Vrana Lake, an ornithological reserve, and the famous Kamenjak Viewpoint, from where you can see the Kornati archipelago. The villa is ideally located close to the cities of Biograd, Zadar and Sibenik, popular tourist spots thanks to all of the historical and cultural sites they have to offer.

Sibenik, the ‘gateway to the Kornati Islands’, should be top of the list for Game of Thrones fans, as many scenes from the hit show were filmed here, and history buffs will enjoy local wonders such as the famous Cathedral of St James, the impressive Franciscan Church and Monastery, and St Michael’s Castle - all stunning pieces of architecture that are well-worth visiting.

This underrated Croatian gem also boasts stunning, uncrowded coastline, and is THE place to find amazing gastronomical delights such as Adriatic lobster, sea bass, squid and langoustines. Be sure to wash it all down with some local Sibenik wine!

For lively, unpretentious and varied nightlife, make sure you head into the city of Zadar after dark. The town’s historic centre is where you’ll find the most buzzing atmosphere, and in the warmer months everyone spills out of the all night cafes and bars and into the streets. You’ll find a great mix of people here as the scene isn’t divided into ‘young’ and ‘old’, so you’ll get to meet an eclectic group of people. If you decide to enjoy a night out here make sure you check out Arsenal Zadar, a lively bar with soaring ceilings that serves as cafe and art gallery by day...but by night is transformed, with a restaurant upstairs and a cocktail bar and stage downstairs. Here you can expect to hear traditional Dalmatian acapella groups, local bands and well-known DJs.

For a more laid back experience visit caffe Bar Brazil which you’ll find down at the waterfront near to the area's famous Sea Organ art installation. During the day this seaside bar serves up delicious coffees and ice cream, but by the evening you’ll be able to buy a beer or wine to enjoy at one of the tables that spill out into the landscaped gardens and marvel at the incredible views of the gorgeous sunset.

Region

The Zadar region, anchored by the vibrant city of Zadar, boasts a rich history, breathtaking natural beauty, and a cultural tapestry that dates back millennia. Situated along Croatia's stunning Dalmatian coast, and shaped by the dramatic Velebit mountain range, Zadar is a unique destination offering a captivating array of experiences.

Zadar city is known for its ancient Roman ruins, white sand beach, and rugged coastline. Take a wander through the world of the Old Town's labyrinthine streets, which are a wonder to explore, brimming with historical treasures. Make sure to stop at the Church of St. Donatus, an architectural masterpiece and a prominent example of Byzantine construction and one of the most famous pre-Romanesque churches in Croatia.

Zadar's architectural prowess isn't limited to its historical buildings; it also embraces modern art installations. The Sea Organ, designed by architect Nikola Bašić, is an ingenious creation consisting of underwater pipes and chambers that produce hauntingly beautiful sounds as the waves of the Adriatic Sea wash over it. It's a serene place to watch the sunset, often accompanied by an equally impressive light show from the nearby Greeting to the Sun installation, which comes alive with vibrant colours after dusk.

The city's waterfront promenade, dotted with cafes, bars, and restaurants, provides the perfect setting for relaxed evenings. You can pass away the hours while savouring a leisurely meal and enjoying the sea views with watch boats sailing past. Don't forget to sample the local cuisine, which includes fresh seafood, pasticada (a traditional beef stew), and the world-famous Pag cheese. Pair your meal with a glass of local wine or rakija, a strong fruit brandy, to complete the culinary experience.

The Zadar region is renowned for its proximity to a collection of stunning islands, each with its own unique character. Ugljan, often referred to as the "Green Island," is known for its lush vegetation and charming fishing villages. The island offers a serene escape from the bustle of city life, with numerous opportunities for hiking, cycling, and exploring unspoiled beaches.

Dugi Otok, or the "Long Island," is a true gem of unspoiled natural beauty. The island is known for its rugged coastline, pristine coves, and the famous Saharun Beach, with its white sands and crystalclear waters. It’s also home to Telascica Nature Park, a protected area that encompasses stunning cliffs, saltwater lakes, and a diverse range of flora and fauna.

Back on the mainland, and just a couple of hours out of the city you’ll find one of the most renowned natural attractions in Croatia, Plitvice Lakes. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the park is a land of cascading waterfalls, interconnected emerald lakes, and lush forests, with a network of well-maintained trails that guide visitors through this natural wonder. Wooden boardwalks allow you to get up close to the waterfalls, making it a family-friendly destination.

The Zadar region offers more than just natural beauty. The local markets, such as Zadar's Green Market, provide an opportunity to immerse yourself in Croatian culture. Here, you can explore stalls filled with fresh produce, local crafts, and artisanal products, experiencing the flavours and craftsmanship of the region. Zadar is also home to a variety of unique traditions and cultural festivals. Local celebrations, like the annual regatta of traditional boats or performances of 'Klapa' a cappella singing are both integral parts of the region's cultural identity.

The Zadar region is a microcosm of Croatia's diverse and enchanting way of life, with something to offer everyone that visits. It's a place where history, nature, and culture converge to create a harmonious and multifaceted destination. Whether you're hiking through national parks, swimming near waterfalls, exploring ancient cities, or savouring traditional cuisine, the Zadar region promises an unforgettable experience for all. To visit Zadar is to step into the heart of Croatia and experience its multifaceted charm.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

If you’re staying at Villa Jo with children you’ll be happy to note that there are plenty of amenities that have been provided with them in mind. The villa features not one, but two private pools - one that is specifically for the kids! The pool area isn’t fenced off in any way, so it’s worth keeping an eye on the little ones as they play in the vicinity. There’s a good-sized outdoor play area too, with swings and a slide as well as a ping-pong table and small football goals, ideal for a kick about in the shade of the trees. You’ll find a covered eating area too, so that the whole family can enjoy alfresco meals out of the heat of the Mediterranean sun.

The location of Villa Jo is such that day trips to the nearby cities of Sibenik, Zadar and Biograd are a breeze, and it’s in these places that you’ll find loads for the whole family to enjoy - whatever their age. In Biograd you’ll find Soline Beach, one of the rare sandy beaches in the region. There are excellent facilities here such as changing areas and showers, cafes and bars and rental places where you can hire boats, canoes and dinghies. Finding shade won’t be a problem thanks to the pine trees that surround the beach, and that, along with the shallow waters make this beach an excellent choice for those holidaying with young children.

Little adrenalin junkies will enjoy a trip to Fun Park Biograd, the largest amusement park in the country. Attractions include roller coasters, ferris wheels, rides for young children and the famous ‘Atlantis’ - a 20m high flume ride. You’ll also have the chance to be entertained by jugglers, magicians, exhibitions and circus performers from all over the globe, as well as being able to experience virtual reality interactive rides suitable for the whole family.

If you want to take things at a slower pace and see something you won’t find anywhere else, be sure to take the kids to Zadar to see the town’s famous Sea Organ. Designed by Nikola Basic in 2005, this impressive installation features 35 organ pipes which emit otherworldly tones determined by the waves. After dark you’ll be treated to a stunning light show courtesy of The ‘Greeting To The Sun’ installation. This incredible piece of art features 300 multi-layered glass plates set in a circle and synchronised with the same wave energy. Beneath the glass are solar modules that spring into life at sunset, using lights to simulate our solar system. It really is a sight that young visitors will remember forever.
