Our Top Regions in Wales

Why visit Wales?

Wales is one of the UK’s strongest destinations for outdoor travel, with national parks, beaches and walking routes all within close reach. Snowdonia stands out for its mountain scenery and hiking trails, while the coastline offers a mix of wide sandy beaches and smaller, quieter coves. Inland areas bring a slower pace, with countryside landscapes and market towns shaping everyday life.

There’s a strong sense of heritage too, with castles, historic sites and cultural traditions woven throughout the country. Food is simple and local, from fresh seafood along the coast to traditional dishes and independent cafés in towns and villages. Whether you’re travelling as a couple, family or group, Wales feels accessible, varied and easy to explore.

What Oliver Loves

The balance between coastline and countryside – you can spend the morning walking in the mountains and the afternoon by the sea, all within a relatively short distance.

Wales: At a Glance

  • North Wales and Snowdonia – Known for mountains, lakes and some of the country’s most dramatic scenery. Snowdonia sits at the heart of this region, with walking routes, outdoor activities and access to castles and small towns across North Wales.

  • Anglesey – An island off the north coast, Anglesey is known for its beaches, coastal paths and open landscapes. It’s well suited to slower stays, with plenty of space for walking, wildlife spotting and time by the sea.

  • Ceredigion – This stretch of coastline looks out over Cardigan Bay and is known for quieter beaches, rural countryside and wildlife. It’s a good choice for a more relaxed pace, with small towns and coastal walks throughout the region.

  • South Wales – A broader region combining coastline, countryside and towns, with access to national parks, historic sites and a range of walking routes. It offers a mix of scenery and easy access, making it a practical base for exploring different parts of Wales.

Top Tip

A car makes exploring much easier, especially in rural areas where public transport can be limited and distances between beaches, villages and walking routes are longer than they appear.

Getting there and around

By train

Rail connections link major towns and cities, with direct routes from London to Cardiff in around two hours. Trains are a good option for city breaks and larger destinations.

By car

Driving is the most flexible way to explore, particularly for Snowdonia, Anglesey and West Wales. Roads can be narrow and winding in rural areas, but journeys are scenic and distances are manageable.
