Outside Grounds
The Walled Garden – five acres, 600 overgrown Christmas Trees removed, levelled and reseeded. This year we have planted 45 Scottish Apple Trees, 15 Conference Pears and 10 cordons of Plums.

Deer fencing has been erected along the line of the fourth wall (which was always missing as it allows the burn to take the frost away) and planted with 700 hundred hornbeam to form a new hedge and to keep the deer out.

Herbaceous Border by the house – Designed by John Hoyland ‘Mad for Joy’ who has designed the beautiful garden at Glyndebourne.

Large areas of Ponticum have been cleared and replaced with a collection of Rhododendron, Azaleas and Magnolia.  – a wonderful selection of species, which have been planted for the future generations and selected by the renowned expert, Kenneth Cox.

Lawns – a full time job from the first cut in March, right through to early October.

This garden is evolving and gives us so much joy.

Dumfries House is well worth a visit and is 4o minutes drive from Braehead Estate.  Set in 2,000 acres, this stunning estate and 18th-Century house with its unrivalled collection of Chippendale furniture has something for everyone.

The Walled Garden –  over the past two years this garden has been transformed from a derelict dumping site to a magnificently restored garden with a mixture of terraces, new greenhouses, formal areas and a one and a half acre Education Garden. Open all year round.

Culzean Castle and Country Park – National Trust for Scotland Woods, beaches, secret follies, play park and a cliff-top castle – a fantastic day out.

This glorious 260 ha estate was once the playground of David Kennedy, 10th Earl of Cassillis – a man who was keen to impress with his wealth and status. Opulent to the extreme, the park is planted with conifers and beech, sculpted around miles of sandy coastline dotted with caves, and finished off with a Swan Pond, an ice house, flamboyant formal gardens and fruit-filled glasshouses.

The castle itself is perched on the Ayrshire cliffs. It was designed by Robert Adam in the late 18th century and is filled to the turrets with treasures that tell the stories of the people who lived here.

Just a short ferry ride across the Firth of Clyde and you can explore either Arran or Cumbrae, or even both! Experience perfect island life, which is full of tasty food and drink, exciting outdoor activities and beautiful views.

There are numerous restaurants near to Braehead Estate only 10 minutes away.

Try heading to the coast to sample the wonderful fish available. In the house, we have a list of restaurants that we have tried and recommend.

There are a number of Festivals throughout the year, which can be enjoyed by all.  Here are a few examples:

Boswell Book Festival – is held in May at Dumfries House.
THE WORLD’S ONLY FESTIVAL OF BIOGRAPHY AND MEMOIR – The Boswell Book Festival is a great example of an event that mixes Scottish history and tradition, with contemporary culture and an iconic setting to create something really special for visitors.

Largs Food Fest – last weekend in May

Ballantrae Food Festival – second weekend in June at Ballantrae Harbour in South Ayrshire.

Glasgow Fair – The Glasgow Fair is a holiday usually held during the second half of July in Glasgow. ‘The Fair’ is the oldest of similar holidays and dates to the 12th century. The fair’s earliest incarnation occurred in 1190, when Bishop Jocelin obtained permission from King William the Lion to hold the festivities.

Largs Viking Festival – first week in September.
Started in 1980 this Annual Festival marks the 1263 Battle of Largs, the last mainland battle between the Scots and Norse.
Each year the living history Viking Village is open to the public so that they can get a glimpse of what life would have been like in a 13th Century Viking Village.

The Cumnock Tryst – last weekend in September.
It is a music festival launched in 2013 by eminent composer and local boy James MacMillan, with Nicola Benedetti as patron. Brass and choral music are two especially strong traditions in Cumnock

Illumination – Irvine Harbour’s Festival of Light – last weekend in November.
The sky will light up with fireworks and Irvine’s sleepy, historic waterfront will shimmer into life this St Andrew’s Day as we celebrate the start of our four night art and light spectacular, illumination: Harbour Festival of Light.

Celtic Connections – last two weeks of January.  It is the largest annual winter music festival of its kind and the UK’s premier celebration of Celtic music.

Owner Profile

Property Owners
Charles and Sallie

How long have you owned the property?
We could not believe our good fortune when we bought Braehead Estate in early 2012. After 900 years in the ownership of one family, Blair had never previously been on the market. We came to see it, as it was very near to where my husband’s family came from in Ayrshire, and simply fell in love with it – just as our visitors do!

Since then, we have completely refurbished the house, but always keen to keep it as a wonderful family home. Having had a background in the luxury hotel industry, with Mandarin Oriental, I wanted to ensure that our guests would have a stay they would never forget – the best beds and Egyptian linens; the highest quality toiletries and towels; a great chef who prepares meals to cater for every taste using locally sourced produce; and service which is seamlessly efficient but always friendly.

We want to create an atmosphere that our guests feel they are in their own home. Braehead Estate is a house which wraps itself around you, whether it is a group of eight or 24. It works just as well for house parties, a family celebration of three different generations, for a company away day, dinner, or for a group of friends wanting to do a few rounds at the world-class Championship golf courses on the Ayrshire coast. Braehead Estate is only available for Exclusive Use for a small number of nights a year.

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
From the Spring to Autumn, the gardens look stunning, with the more formal beds around the house, which were replanted last year, to the sweeping lawns which go down to the Italian Garden across the Bombo Burn. For those looking for something a bit more challenging, you are welcome to come and look at the progress we are making on restoring the fabulous 5 acre Walled Garden – and even to lend a hand if the mood takes you!

Our ambition has been to bring together the luxury of a beautiful home, the beauty and tranquillity of the Scottish countryside and the service you would expect from a top class hotel – yet less than half an hour from Glasgow city centre and its International Airports.

Blair is the most special and magical place we know, and we are delighted that our guests seem to think so too.

  • Trip of a lifetime

    Posted by Mark on 16/12/2017

I want to thank you and your team on a truly wonderful experience for my wife’s surprise 50th birthday destination celebration. When I came up with the idea of hosting a destination celebration for 35 friends and family at an estate in Scotland, it was daunting to think of the details of how to pull it off and ensure that our guests had a great time. I can now say that my anxieties of committing a large group of different people, traveling from all over the United States and World, to an estate that I never visited, was completely unfounded. The four-day experience was everything I had dreamed and envisioned it would be. The menu and the quality of the meals was outstanding. The staff was so friendly and accommodating to all our guests. The estate and property was beautiful. Driving up the private road and seeing the estate for the first time provided the awe factor I was hoping. Your itinerary recommendations over the four days provided something for everyone, especially the ice-breaker on the first night with the murder/mystery dinner. I did not have to worry about anything or any detail; you handled it all. Our guest loved the experience, and for some, it was a trip of a lifetime. Have a wonderful New Year!

  • Perfection!

    Posted by Natalie on 26/06/2017

WOW !! We are struggling to come down to earth having just spent the most unforgettable, magical weekend at Braehead Estate.
From the moment we arrived everything was perfect. The discrete, friendly team that worked tirelessly all weekend to anticipate our every need – be it a fresh pot of coffee after a morning walk or warm soup after standing in the rain during the Falconry display. The attention to detail was superb and yet the atmosphere created was one of a home from home – think Downton Abbey not boutique hotel. Formal dinners, informal lunches, barbecues (in the pouring rain) everything was organised with perfection and the food is excellent!
The house is fantastic – a great rambling pile, with multiple staircases, corridors and charming bedrooms. The beds are to die (or rather sleep!) for – many of our friends commented that they had never slept on such comfortable mattresses….i think we would all have smuggled them home had we been able! The reception rooms are beautiful and at the same time homely; filled book cases, family portraits & a fabulous piano. I loved the boot room – complete with a full array of wellies and parkas to entice us into the grounds which are spectacular. Clearly a park for centuries, the maturity and splendour of the vegetation is breathtaking: alleys of grand beaches, caverns of rhododendron and gunnera, giant laburnum, stunning copper beach, rows of Wellingtonia and the whole wrapped in the excess of green growth that is so spectacular in this temperate rainforest. The formal gardens are immaculate, the borders beautiful and the hedges trimmed to perfection.
In fact perfection is the only adjective that works for our weekend at Braehead Estate. I cannot recommend it highly enough! Thank you to all the team for making our weekend so incredible.

  • Sad to say goodbye

Posted by Ric and Mardi, California on 16/06/2016

The planning of our 25th Anniversary and Vow Renewal from California would have been impossible without Annie’s support and attention to detail. Her assistance was instrumental in ensuring that my vision for the day was just as I dreamed. She pulled it all off with a smile on her face. She worked with me for over a year planning and communicating with vendors. She never once told me something couldn’t be done, she just found a way to make it happen.
Blair was the perfect place for my husband and I to celebrate 25 years together and to be able to share that with our family and friends. Annie and her staff were kind and attentive and made our entire stay lovely and stress free. We were fortunate enough to share this wonderful experience with our group of 10 family members and friends for 5 days.
Our grandkids loved having the run of the house and exploring the grounds. All our guests enjoyed their stay and exploring the gardens and walking the gorgeous grounds daily. The mini-highland games were a big success and had us all laughing and enjoying the tradition of the Scottish Highland Games.
The food was fantastic and plentiful. The chef provided outstanding meals throughout our stay. This was some of the best food I’ve ever had. The entire staff was always pleasant, personable and professional. It never felt like they were just doing a job, it was obvious the entire staff thought of this as more than just a job, it was their home as much as the owners, and the pride they have in it is clear in their care, and not just the house and grounds but of the guests as well.
Our time at Blair was beyond what I imagined it would be. It truly felt like it was our home, fully staffed to meet all of our needs, wants, and wishes. We were sad to say goodbye.

  • A real life Wonderland

    Posted by Mallory on 04/06/2016

For those who are lucky enough to be graced with the opportunity to share memories at the Blair Estate, you will not be disappointed. Not ever experiencing anything of its nature before and possibly ever again… I cherish the memories made. The Blair Estate is a real life Wonderland, with the most picturesque grounds and endless scenery. A photographers dreamscape. Though it does not end there! All of the people who work day and night to cater to the experience of relaxation and enjoyment feel like family. The sense of community extends beyond and I will forever cherish the friendships made.

  • No better venue!

    Posted by Laura on 16/05/2016

My colleagues and I stayed at the Blair Estate in April this year for our annual team building event with dinner and overnight stay. We were most impressed with the house and all the redecoration that has taken place since our last stay. Annemarie the General Manager and all her staff couldn’t have done more to make us welcome or to make our stay more enjoyable.
The quality of all catering was excellent and we particularly enjoyed our private dinner in the beautiful candle lit dining room. There really is no better venue for an exclusive use stay and the only negative is that one night is really not enough to appreciate the house and luxurious bedrooms. We must stay two nights next time!
