The wonderful Villa Alaior enjoys a wonderful location overlooking the azure sea at Son Bou. It is a splendid property with five bedrooms, four bathrooms and a gorgeous living space. It is fresh, drowned in natural light and offers much charm. This villa is perfect for large families or groups of friends who want to unwind, relax and enjoy this beautiful spot.

Son Bou enjoys one of the longest white sand beaches on the whole of the island. It boasts a diving centre, a fantastic range of watersports, a great selection of bars, cafes, restaurants and shops and even a disco! There are horse riding routes and a nature reserve full of wildlife. The resort sits just 7 km from Alaior, a historic old town founded in 1304, where you still get a sense of its medieval past when meandering through its maze of narrow cobbled streets. Its Church of Santa Eulalia peers over the pretty whitewashed houses and gorgeous little squares where visitors linger at the friendly cafes.

Villa Alaior enjoys a warm glow from its honey-coloured exterior, which is surrounded by lush greenery. Inside, its dazzling white walls and interior design will make you smile. For sure, it is a very engaging villa with plenty of charm. With gorgeous beams, plenty of arches, lots of pretty detailing and a cool, elegant ambience, it is very welcoming. The main living area enjoys a high ceiling, comfy sofas, a television, a feature fireplace and gorgeous views out to sea. The living space is open plan in design with a gorgeous white circular table in the dining area, and a delightful kitchen tucked away. This is utterly charming with beams, pretty tiles, shelves, excellent appliances and modern cabinetry.

Three of the villa’s bedrooms are located on the ground floor, with the final two upstairs. The master bedroom suite is incredible with gorgeous beams on the ceiling, a very striking black and white floor, an in-room slipper bath where you will fill truly pampered and an ensuite bathroom. It is super cool and very stylish. You might have to draw straws for this one! There is also a lovely twin room on the ground floor and a fun bunk room. The twin enjoys some lovely splashes of colour against its dazzling white walls, as does the bunk room, which is lovely for children. Another twin enjoys a huge painting above the beds, and the final room is another delightful double with an ensuite. The family bathrooms are gorgeous. They are beautifully finished, one in white and blue with exquisite tiling and another with an enormous walk-in shower and stunning wooden shelves where you will find a contemporary sink.

The outside spaces of Villa Alaior are every bit as magnificent as its interiors. A huge swimming pool sits on the terrace with a jacuzzi next to it, a lovely spot for a glass of bubbles in the sunshine. There are sun loungers, and parasols surrounding the pool and the sea views are totally captivating. There is a shaded alfresco dining area where guests can dine with a view and a built-in barbecue area where your barbecue masters can have a lot of fun. All of this is surrounded by lush greenery, palms and towering trees. You won’t forget this dreamy place for quite some time!

Villa Alaior enjoys a prestigious location overlooking the sea in Son Bou. Enjoying one of Menorca’s best beaches together with excellent entertainment and amenities, this town is tops! It is a great base for touring the island and visiting the two biggest towns of Mahon and Ciutadella.

Son Bou sits on the south coast of Menorca, starting on the wooded hillside and sweeping down to its tranquil nature reserve that lines the beach. It offers many shops, bars, cafes and restaurants, many of which are located together in commercial centres. Its endless beach is edged by sand dunes and a few beach bars. The town offers a dive centre that will arrange local dives for you. There are banana boats and jet skis, as well as pedalos. Towards one end of the beach, you will discover a nudist section, so families may want to avoid that. Son Bou’s nature reserve, just behind the dunes, is a lovely place for a shady walk, and the wetlands and reed beds are filled with interesting birdlife. If you tread quietly, you will have a good chance of seeing a Booted Eagle, a Blue Rock Thrush and an Egyptian Vulture. Son Bou enjoys a little mini-train that runs around the resort and is popular with children.

If you head into the atmospheric town of Alaior, you will pass Torre d’en Gaumes on the way. It is a pre-historic village that is worth a stop for its flint stone ruins. At Alaior, Menorcan tradition meets street party at its lively festival, which is usually held over five days, but most of the action happens on Saturday and Sunday. The streets come alive with carnival processions, drum bands and giant-size figures while the cheering crowd throw confetti and colourful streamers. Horse riders perform their famous equestrian moves called jaleos before being presented with traditional green canes and silver spoons. Alaior is built around the old Ihalor Hill, from where it takes its name. It was founded by King James II of Mallorca in 1304. Next to its Baroque-inspired church is the Munt de l’Angel Park with its wonderful countryside views. There are lots of windmills around, including Den John Mill and Den Pujol Mill. Alaior is the birthplace of the internationally renowned Menorcan cheese Queso de Menorca as well as offering homemade sausages, delicious ice creams, pastries and liquors.

Not far away, Santa Tomas is a delightful beach resort with an excellent beach, some very good restaurants, fabulous bars and clubs and Hawaiian-style beach bars. You can enjoy Pomada’s watching the sun go down. They are made with Menorca’s own Xoriguer sloe gin, lemon Fanta, ice and lemon. The island’s coastal path Cami De Cavalls is a total wonder with access to beautiful sandy beaches, rocky diving pools and reefs resplendent with sea life.

Cala en Porter is another wonderful beach within easy reach. It is curved and sits at the top of an inlet with gently sloping sand.

Ciutadella is on the west coast and is known as ‘Vella I Belli’ (‘Old and Beautiful’). It is Menorca’s second city with a picturesque port and an engaging old quarter lined with grand gold-tinged buildings. The medieval streets are filled with palaces, churches and fortresses as well as wonderful restaurants and bars. Placa d’es Born is one of the most picturesque squares in Ciutadella. It is a delight to explore. Waterside dining can be found at the port. If you get there early enough, you can watch the fishermen bringing in the local catch of the day. You can also catch a ferry from here to Alcudia in Mallorca. Ciutadella celebrates its local festival on 23 and 24 June each year, and the party is one of the most spectacular festivals in Menorca.

The island’s picturesque capital Mahon is a lively city rich in history, culture and entertainment. Close to the Placa Espanya is the pretty 18th-century Gothic Carme church. The 18th-century Xoriguer Gin Distillery is definitely worth a visit, and there are many cute shops selling leather, pottery and clothes. The early morning fish market is fascinating to walk through with its huge piles of colourful fish. Mahon is well known for its upmarket nightlife and waterfront bars and clubs.

THE REGION

The resort of Son Bou in the municipality of Alaior, on the south coast of Menorca, is renowned for having the biggest and probably best beach on the island. The resort is located around 20 kilometres from the international airport at Mahon.

Son Bou is a well-developed area containing many restaurants offering a good range of British, Indian, Chinese and Mediterranean dishes, as well as numerous bars, some of which are themed to help entertain young ones.

While the resort is very popular for families, the sheer size of the beach makes it easy for those who prefer to avoid the little ones to find their ideal spots! There is an abundance of natural sand dunes that make a very pleasant backdrop.
