Why visit Brittany?

Brittany is a region shaped by the sea. Fishing boats bob in historic harbours, lighthouses guard dramatic cliffs and beaches stretch for miles along the Atlantic coast. Yet beyond its shoreline lies a landscape rich in folklore, Celtic heritage and medieval architecture.

Saint-Malo’s fortified walls overlook tidal islands and sweeping sands, while Dinan enchants with half-timbered houses and cobbled streets. Further west, the Pink Granite Coast reveals surreal rock formations sculpted by wind and waves. Inland, you’ll find peaceful canals, dense forests and château-dotted countryside perfect for walking and cycling.

Food plays a central role in Breton life. Expect freshly caught seafood, buttery crêpes, savoury galettes and crisp local cider poured into traditional bowls. Harbourside cafés serve moules marinières with golden fries, while village markets showcase artisan cheeses, salted caramels and regional pastries.

Brittany’s climate is similar to Cornwall – warm and bright in summer, cooler but atmospheric in spring and autumn. May, June and September are particularly appealing, offering mild temperatures and quieter beaches, while July and August bring lively festivals and long, sunlit evenings.

What Oliver Loves
