About the surrounding area of Villa Gli ArchiThere are fantastic Umbrian wineries close at hand, including Lungarotti in Torgiano. One of the prettiest wineries you’ll ever see and the perfect place to take a tour and enjoy a tasting.
Perugia is Umbria’s capital and certainly worth a visit, especially as it’s known as the City of Chocolate. Other than stuffing your face with chocolate the city has a great youthful vibe driven by its universities. The city also boasts a litany of historical sights including the so-called Underground City that remains from medieval times. It’s also a great place to escape the summer heat.
Lago Trasimeno is Umbria’s answer to Lake Como, a sprawling lake with three islands and spotted with medieval towns around its edges. Boat tours can take you out to explore the islands, but there is also ample opportunity for water sports such as wakeboarding or kayaking.
Assisi is one of Umbria’s historical gems. Pilgrims the world over flock to Assisi to visit the St Francis Basilica (two cathedrals build on top of each other), which boasts one of the most spectacular interiors you’ll see. The town also includes one of the highest point’s in the region, providing a great opportunity to get as scenic vantage point (there’s even wild horses to spot!).
Marmore Waterfall is an hour away by car, and looks like something out of a Central American rainforest, but it’s actually one of the highest waterfalls in Europe. The two-tiered waterfall is 165m high and was manufactured by the Romans! This makes it the second-largest man-made waterfall in the world. The Romans used it to divert unsanitary water, today it’s used to generate electricity.

Best Suited For: All AgesLake Trasimeno is a great place to take the kids and the perfect place to cool down. There are a litany of beaches on its edges, and the towns of Castiglione del Lago, Passignano, Panicale and San Feliciano are all family friendly spots. There is also a fantastic cycle track that circumnavigates the lake if you’re up for a family activity.
The centre of Perugia is largely traffic free, making it the perfect place to explore with young kids. The Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria is a great educational experience thanks to its range of Italian art, including works by Piero della Francesca. And you certainly can’t visit Perugia with kids without taking a tour of the chocolate factory! Home to Baci chocolates, they offer tours in English and there’s no shortage of tasty goodies.
On the outskirst of Perguia you can also find Citta` della Domenica, part theme park, part zoo, this is one of the best family adventures in Umbria and offers everything from bird shows, rides, adventure games, historical recreations and other immersive activities. Indeed the park includes a village of Pinocchio and the castle of Sleeping Beauty!
