History
Castle Mago was built during the first decade of the 16th century and became the residence of Leopold II, Grand Duke of Tuscany, during the reclamation of the Maremma land.

Leopold II was born on 3 October, 1797 in Florence and died in Rome on 29 January, 1870. He was the last Grand Duke of Tuscany, reigning from 1824 and abdicating in 1859.

Castle Mago was been the residence of many Grand Dukes of Tuscany, but Leopold II lived there the longest. Documents dating back to 1529 demonstrate the existence of a former palace that was renovated to become the administrative headquarters of the Campiglia Marittima Railways.

In 1860, the Castle passed into the hands of the Merciai family, who transformed it into a "Historical House" open to all those who wished to enjoy an unforgettable holiday while discovering this beautiful land rich in history and art.

Subsequent works carried out since 1900 have been supervised by the Italian Institute of Fine Arts. Today, the castle represents one of the most important monuments of the Tuscan Maremma.

Wine Tours
As this is a land famous for the production of DOC and DOCG wines known all over the world, a tour of the local producers, such as Sassicaia and Ornellaia, is recommended. Tours can be booked in advance directly through the castle. Visits can be personalized according to taste and expertise. Wine experts will guide and assist visitors throughout the itinerary.

Olive Oil Tours
Another very important production in this area is olive oil. We suggest a visit to a local olive mill, "Fonte di Foiano" which is located in the characteristic medieval town of Bolgheri. Here, guests can discover the fascinating process of oil production and savor it directly from the source. This tour is often combined with wine tours for a day filled with good food and natural products. Tuscany exports these products worldwide, enriching the cuisines of diverse cultures.

Wellness Centre
Dive into the past when the Etruscans treated themselves to a bath and massage in this unique and fascinating atmosphere where today guests can experience harmony and relaxation. Discover the reinvigorating effects of the natural hot springs (36°C) at “Il Calidario,” just a short distance from the Castle. The "Thermarium" facilities offer relaxing massages such as Ayurvada, Shiatsu and foot and palm reflex treatments.

Boat Trips
Boat trips are a perfect way to discover the beautiful Tuscan islands of Elba, Giglio and Giannutri. The stunning coastline and crystal clear sea provided for a day of total relaxation.

Cooking Lessons
Cooking demonstrations are recommended for groups. Typical Tuscan dishes are prepared for the experience of the flavor and aroma of high quality ingredients. The lessons are held in the kitchen of the castle.

Town & City Tours
For those who are passionate about culture, art, and history, guided visits to the famous cities of Siena, Pisa, Lucca, Firenze, Volterra and San Gimignano are excellent. Also recommended are visits to the surrounding medieval towns of Massa Marittima, Populonia and Baratti, Suvereto, Campiglia Marittima, Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri. Rich in history and traditions, guests can still feel the magic of the past that has made Tuscany the "Pearl of Italy".

Golf & Tennis
For those who enjoy tennis, there is a sports center with tennis courts near the castle. For golf lovers, just 30 minutes away is "Il Pelagone" golf club, surrounded by olive trees and rows of cypresses. It has the international standard 18 hole course, golf school, large driving range and two putting greens. It is perfect for professionals and beginners alike. Another nearby renowned golf club is the "Punta Ala" club.

Palio di Siena
Siena's "Palio delle Contrade" is among the most heartfelt festivals in Italy. Here religious and social elements are fused together in a fascinating spectacle of historical and cultural traditions, culminating in a final horse race in "Piazza del Campo", where pride and competitive spirit between the "Contrade" are exalted. This tradition goes back to the 11th century, and today "Il Palio" is held twice a year on July 2 and on August 16.

Horse Rides
For nature lovers, a 3 to 6 hour horseback ride is an memorable way to discover hidden treasures. This tour can be arranged inside one of the most important fauna centers of the Maremma, the "Parco dell' Uccellina". This is the perfect choice for appreciating the landscape and culture of Italy, while enjoying a good ride over the characteristic cypress-lined hills, which are landmarks the "Butteri Maremmani" (Tuscan cowboys) used as reference points on their journeys.
