As well as being in a truly idyllic setting within the south Sicilian countryside, Dimora di Penne is also well-connected to amenities. The nearest bars and shops are less than a 15-minute drive away in the town of Scicli.
Well-known for its Baroque architecture, Scicli is a charming place to explore as you stock up on groceries or before enjoying an evening meal. There are several beautiful churches in town, as well as some impressive palazzos to marvel at.
The south of Sicily is perfect for walking and hiking, with Vendicari Nature Reserve offering over 1,500 hectares of wild and beautiful landscapes. The marshes in the reserve are home to wildlife such as flamingos, egrets and pelicans; making it a birdwatcher's paradise. Also found within the reserve are many archaeological remains. Beaches offer snorkelling and swimming, with over 13km of rocky coastline to hike along.
Enjoy the sandy beaches and lovely water for swimming in the fishing village of Sampieri and the resort of Marina di Modica. The latter also offers ideal surfing and windsurfing conditions. There are many restaurants to choose from in both spots, with the ones in Marina di Modica having a slightly livelier atmosphere due to its resort status. One of the best ways to enjoy the beach at Sampieri is by taking a picnic and soaking up the laid-back feel. Hire sun loungers and umbrellas for the full experience.
Hiking and history combine at the Archaeological area of Cava d'Ispica. Here you can explore a series of ancient cave dwellings and burial sites, as well as walk through a beautiful nature reserve.
Other historic must-visit spots include the Baroque town of Modica and slightly further afield, the city of Syracuse. Syracuse boasts a number of ancient ruins and archaeological sites, with many being found on a small island called Ortigia. This historic centre of Syracuse has a charming atmosphere, with its elegant streets and landmarks, such as the Piazza del Duomo. Syracuse's most spectacular site is probably the Greek Theatre, which is just one of a number of ancient ruins within a vast archaeological park.
