Overview
This elegant 18th century villa with sea views was once the home of princes and it is easy to understand why. Villa Mirtillo is within walking distance to the perched town of Massa Lubrense on the Sorrento peninsula, a lovely region of villages, harbours and spectacular views often missed by the tourist keen to head to Sorrento and the better-known Amalfi coast.
The comfortable villa has kept many of its superb original features such as the marble fireplace and ornate downstairs doors and windows. There is some fine furniture and artwork to remind you of the past, alongside the charmingly tiled kitchen, but the six bedrooms and bathrooms and features such as air-conditioning, Wi-Fi and satellite TV definitely belong to the 21st century.
Write your postcards at the desk on the quirky mezzanine level next to the chandelier glistening over the dining table below. Outside, a curve of stone steps sweeps up from the spacious covered al-fresco dining area to the gorgeous terrace and pool – step down again to the shade of the citrus trees and pergola in the lush lower garden.
Villa Mirtillo is ideal for the discerning traveller who would appreciate an authentic Italian experience and a touch of adventure not far from the bustle of Sorrento and the stunningly beautiful island of Capri. Close by there are walking trails through hamlets, olive and citrus groves, finding panoramic views of the Gulfs of Naples and Salerno and winding down to the clear blue waters of picturesque fishing villages, idyllic bays and rocky beaches so perfect for a quiet swim and sunbathe.
Take a boat from the harbour, a short drive away, to the island of Capri, famous for its stunning rugged landscape, yacht filled coves, upmarket shopping and Blue Grotto, a dark cave where the sea glows electric blue. Head to Sorrento, a small resort once a destination on the 19th century European ‘Grand Tour’ and still a fine place to visit. From here there are train and boat trips to some wonderful destinations including Capri, Positano and the Amalfi coast, Naples and Pompei.

Location
About the surrounding area of Villa MirtilloAt the centre of the Sorrento peninsula between the Gulf of Salerno and the Gulf of Naples, Villa Mirtillo is a great base for exploring Sorrento, the island of Capri and the Amalfi coast.
In a convenient setting, the villa is set just above a road leading to the small town of Massa Lubrense and there are restaurants and shops within walking distance as well as the Antica Cattedrale di Massa Lubrense only 500m away.
Massa Lubrense is the ideal base for travellers who would appreciate an authentic Italian experience with easy access of Sorrento and Capri. Indeed, there are daily summer boat trips from its harbour, Marina Della Lobra (a short drive away) to the stunning island of Capri and the cliffside towns and villages of the Amalfi coast.
Across the peninsula, there are so many wonderful walking trails through olive and lemon groves and picturesque routes down to the water. Schiazzano is a charming hamlet in the hills on the northern slope of the hill that extends to Termini, another lovely setting with hiking paths leading down to the sea and others taking you up the magical Monte San Costanzo.
Marina Della Lobra is a tiny fishing village with a small beach in the protected marine nature reserve of Punta Campanella. From here you can walk or swim along the shoreline to find rocky spots for swimming and sunbathing. There is a road down to the beach but for the most adventurous it’s also fun to walk down the steps and pathways from Massa Lubrense (if you don’t mind the hill on the way back).
Around 5km away, don’t miss Bagni della Regina Giovanna, a hidden natural swimming pool and such a romantic and beautiful spot for a dip. You can hike, take the bus or even hire a canoe from Sorrento to find this special place. Intrepid hikers might also enjoy the challenge of reaching the heavenly Leranto Bay, where a mountainous hike from Nerano is needed to reach an idyllic sandy beach with turquoise waters ideal for snorkelling.
Head to the high cliffs of fashionable Sorrento (7km) and gaze across the Gulf of Naples. Take a guided walking tour in the footsteps of Byron, dine out in Piazzo Tasso, browse in the shopping district or visit Palazzo Correale and Museo Muta. Take a tour to try out the locally produced fine wine, limoncello, olive oil and cheese.
From Sorrento there is a high speed train to Naples and there are daily departures by sea to Naples, Positano, Priano, Capri, Ischia and Amalfi. Book a place on the amazing Amalfi coast drive tour or take a day trip to Pompei, Mont Vesuvius or even Rome.
