At the centre of the Sorrento peninsula between the Gulf of Salerno and the Gulf of Naples, Villa Mirtillo is a great base for exploring Sorrento, the island of Capri and the Amalfi coast.
In a convenient setting, the villa is set just above a road leading to the small town of Massa Lubrense and there are restaurants and shops within walking distance as well as the Antica Cattedrale di Massa Lubrense only 500m away.
Massa Lubrense is the ideal base for travellers who would appreciate an authentic Italian experience with easy access of Sorrento and Capri. Indeed, there are daily summer boat trips from its harbour, Marina Della Lobra (a short drive away) to the stunning island of Capri and the cliffside towns and villages of the Amalfi coast.
Across the peninsula, there are so many wonderful walking trails through olive and lemon groves and picturesque routes down to the water. Schiazzano is a charming hamlet in the hills on the northern slope of the hill that extends to Termini, another lovely setting with hiking paths leading down to the sea and others taking you up the magical Monte San Costanzo.
Marina Della Lobra is a tiny fishing village with a small beach in the protected marine nature reserve of Punta Campanella. From here you can walk or swim along the shoreline to find rocky spots for swimming and sunbathing. There is a road down to the beach but for the most adventurous it’s also fun to walk down the steps and pathways from Massa Lubrense (if you don’t mind the hill on the way back).
Around 5km away, don’t miss Bagni della Regina Giovanna, a hidden natural swimming pool and such a romantic and beautiful spot for a dip. You can hike, take the bus or even hire a canoe from Sorrento to find this special place. Intrepid hikers might also enjoy the challenge of reaching the heavenly Leranto Bay, where a mountainous hike from Nerano is needed to reach an idyllic sandy beach with turquoise waters ideal for snorkelling.
Head to the high cliffs of fashionable Sorrento (7km) and gaze across the Gulf of Naples. Take a guided walking tour in the footsteps of Byron, dine out in Piazzo Tasso, browse in the shopping district or visit Palazzo Correale and Museo Muta. Take a tour to try out the locally produced fine wine, limoncello, olive oil and cheese.
From Sorrento there is a high speed train to Naples and there are daily departures by sea to Naples, Positano, Priano, Capri, Ischia and Amalfi. Book a place on the amazing Amalfi coast drive tour or take a day trip to Pompei, Mont Vesuvius or even Rome.
