Location
About the surrounding area of Villa SarakinaVilla Sarakina enjoys such an excellent location. It is a real plus point for the villa. You cannot beat having fabulous views and being amidst centuries-old olive groves and vineyards. Laganas has several mini-markets and plenty of entertainment on offer. There is a good choice of restaurants. It is so lovely to take a delicious meal while overlooking the sea. The main street of Laganas runs along the whole beachfront and continues to the neighbouring resort of Kalamaki to the east.
The beach is delightful with fine, silvery sand and sun loungers and parasols available as well as pedalos and boat trips to catch a glimpse of the protected Caretta turtles swimming around the bay. There are no other watersports allowed on the beach due to the turtles nesting. The sea and coast around Zakynthos is part of the National Marine Park. The rare Caretta turtles lay their eggs in the sands of Gerakas, Dafni, Kalamaki, Marathonisi and especially Sakania, east of Laganas.
The villa is only 8km from the island’s buzzy capital, Zante Town. Most of the houses, shops and buildings are built in traditional Venetian style. They were rebuilt after the destructive earthquake of 1953. Solomos Square is bustling and lined with restaurants and bars and also the Byzantine Museum and Cultural Center.
Zante Town is known for its amazing nightlife. You can enjoy a game of tennis at the Zakynthos Tennis Association. Bochali is 2km from the centre of Zante Town. You will find yourself stopping every few minutes to take panoramic photographs of the pretty harbour, Argassi and the Bay of Laganas. The narrow, charming alleys are lined with old houses and traditional cafes and restaurants. You should try ‘frigania’, a delicious local dessert. A little further up, you will arrive at the castle. Solomos Wines distillery is a great outing where wines can be tasted and bought cheaply. The cellars are beautiful and the wines delicious. There is also olive oil to taste.

Region
An Ionian island of contrasts, Zakynthos (Zante) offers wild landscapes of olive groves and sleepy villages, iconic beaches and idyllic coves alongside bustling tourist hot-spots and long stretches of coastline with sun beds and watersports. Whether you are seeking Greek authenticity or the ease of family-friendly resorts, Zakynthos has so much to appeal to every visitor on the island.
Starting off in the capital, Zakynthos Town, enjoy a morning coffee on the vast Solomos Square overlooking Agios Nikolaos Church by the sea, then get lost in the warren of flower-filled lanes in the old quarter before shopping and dining by the waterfront. As evening nears, the town is a mecca for locals and visitors alike looking for vibrant bars and nightlife.
Head to the rugged north of Zakynthos for a wealth of hidden pebbled coves, picture-perfect swimming spots, the incredible Blue Caves and popular Navagio Beach (also known as Shipwreck Beach). Tour the natural beauty of Cape Skinari, drive to the traditional village of Volimes, bathe in the healing sulphur waters of Xigia Beach, then dine by the harbourfront in Agios Nikolaos.
A little further down the eastern side of the island, be enchanted by the traditional seaside village of Alykansas with its olive groves, vineyards and family-friendly ambience, then hop on a horse-drawn carriage to Alykes across the other side of the vast sandy bay.
Venture inland to experience the island’s wild landscapes of olive groves, cypress and pine forests, mountain slopes and the lovely scent of wild thyme. Zakynthos is wonderful for nature explorers as well as keen hikers with trails criss-crossing through the valleys.
The south of Zakynthos also awaits, so loved for its beautiful beaches and the incredible Marine Park, a protected area including Gerakas Beach, Marathonisi Island and the famous loggerhead turtles.
Bustling Laganas Beach will appeal to tourists wanting to stay near restaurants, bars and a beach with summer watersports. Meanwhile, Kalamaki is located between Laganas and Zakynthos Town, ideal for couples and families searching for a long and sandy beach, inviting places to eat and a range of child-friendly activities. For a truly memorable outing, join a sea-kayaking tour of this part of the coastline in search of the island’s beloved turtles.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesVilla Sarakina enjoys a large outdoor garden and terrace and a lovely pool. This is a real plus for a family. The villa is close to fantastic beaches which stretch for miles. Lagunas Beach continues straight into the one at Kalamaki and there are so many more around the island. A very popular beach for children is Shipwreck Beach which gets is name from the wreck of an old merchant vessel called Panagiotis which was wrecked more than 30 years ago. Children can climb aboard and have some fun. The beach can only be reached by boat which adds to the adventure.
At Solomos Square in Zante Town you can hire bikes, toy jeeps and motorcycles for children. There is a fun tourist train to travel around the town. Sarakinado Water Village is a great family attraction just outside Zante Town. The Thrill Tower, Family Tower, Boomerbowl Tower and Extreme Tower slides are thrilling. The lazy river is great fun and there is also crazy golf for your enjoyment.
Tsilivi has a great water park with plenty of rides and slides for all ages next to the Planos Bay Hotel. There is also a lovely beach with shallow water. You will find fish and shells in the water.
There are many boat trips available. You can take a glass bottom boat to spot Caretta turtles swimming around Marathonisi Island. It is sometimes known as ‘Turtle Island’ as there are so many turtles. You will be swimming and snorkeling on the trip too. You can also visit the Keri Caves and secret beach on the rocky side of Turtle Island. If you are in a small enough boat you can go inside the caves and though the arch next to the caves. You can also do all of this by hiring a private boat.
Nana’s Horse Riding Centre in Kalamaki is excellent for rides along the 5km beach to Laganas on horseback or up in the mountains. The centre was founded in 1983 and takes the name of the founder’s daughter. It remains a family run business. You can either take a 1 hour tour or 2 hours. You can even ride in the sea which is a magical experience.
