The dazzling, contemporary Villa Katia is one of a pair Cretan gems located in the laid-back, delightful resort of Kalamaki, just 5km from the stunning Venetian harbour of Chania. With four bedrooms, gorgeous living space, a second play or relaxation room, a gym and dreamy outside space, the villa is perfect for families or groups of friends. If there are more than eight of you, you could even consider taking Villa Katia’ sister villa, Villa Stathis, which also sleeps eight guests in luxurious comfort.

Kalamaki is just fabulous. With glistening soft sands, warm, turquoise sea, a fantastic range of restaurants, bars and taverns plus a variety of shops, it is a wonderful destination where you can truly relax and easily explore the many charms of Crete. If you don’t want to drive once you arrive at your villa, you can easily catch the local buses or take a taxi into Chania Old Town, Agia Marina or beyond. Chania Old Town is one of the most alluring, captivating towns of Crete. With picturesque, narrow alleys draped with colourful bougainvillea, a fabulous dining scene, atmospheric bars, the most amazing sunsets and gorgeous little boutiques lining the cobbled streets, you will quickly lose your heart and want to return time and time again. Crete is also home to three of the most sensational beaches in all of Greece, Balos Beach, Elafonissis and Falasarna. You really must try and visit at least one of them!

Villa Katia is built over three levels with the bedrooms sprinkled throughout the villa. The villa’s bright white, straight lined architecture is very striking and blends brilliantly with the glass and wood that is featured throughout the villa. Villa Katia comes with a top notch multimedia system and the best fittings imaginable. The interiors also offer dazzling white walls but enjoy vivid colour splashes and added contrast and texture. The interior designers have brilliantly designed gorgeous bathroom spaces, heavenly bedrooms and open plan luxury living. Vibrant contemporary artworks and colourful items of furniture add eye-catching colour pops. With huge floor-to-ceiling doors in every space, the rooms are drowned in natural light. The ground floor living space enjoys a minimalist feel with a fabulous vivid blue sofa facing towards the garden and pool and a stylish dining area enjoying a similar view. The kitchen is sleek and contemporary with wooden cabinetry, excellent appliances and thick, bright white worktops. The wood theme continues with a floating staircase that takes you up to the first floor and down to the lower ground level. One of the villa’s four bedrooms is located on the ground floor, a classy double with a luxurious kingsize bed, a fabulous ensuite bathroom and glass doors that slide open to a pretty private terrace.

The first floor is home to the master bedroom suite which boasts an immensely comfortable kingsize bed, a unique wooden shelved feature wall, a stunning ensuite bathroom and a beautifully furnished balcony. The other first floor bedroom is a delightful twin which also enjoys an immaculate, contemporary ensuite bathroom and a balcony where you can enjoy your morning cup of coffee or a chilled glass of local white wine while you are getting ready for the evening.

The final bedroom, a very attractive twin, is located on the lower ground floor. It opens to a peaceful terrace. All of the beds in Villa Katia are beautifully dressed with crisp cottons and gorgeous, quality bedspreads. This room’s ensuite, like the others, is very striking in its design and boasts the very best of fittings. Also on the lower ground floor is the second living space that can be used as a children’s play room or a relaxation space where you can watch a movie or read a book in peace. There is a very well-equipped gym which fitness enthusiasts will enjoy. Another staircase leads up from the lower floor directly to the garden and pool space.

The swimming pool is stunning, surrounded by luxury loungers which sit on smart astroturf. You can enjoy pre-dinner drinks on the trendy wooden outdoor furniture that sits on the terrace just outside the living area. At the side of the villa, you will discover a cute little shaded courtyard with lots of colourful cushions and greenery. It’s another perfect space for drinks and holiday chatter.

Guests choosing to stay at Villa Katia receive a welcome hamper. For those travelling with big families or a large group of friends, the double sofa bed in the lower living area raises the capacity up to ten guests.

Villa Katia enjoys a lovely position just 150m from the beach in Kalamaki, a very friendly, laid-back resort just outside of Chania. With a gorgeous beach, some amazing restaurants and tavernas and some useful shops, it is a great place to be. The beach restaurants are wonderful and generally always offer a glass of raki and some fruit or a dinky pudding as a treat afterwards. There is a good range of restaurants, some serving traditional Greek specialities and others offering fine dining such Corinna Star at Corinna Mare and the restaurant at the Domes Noruz Chania Hotel.

A good bus service runs from Kalamaki into the Old Town of Chania and the list of excursions is endless. You may want to spend a day on the exotic, spectacular beaches of Balos, Falasarna or Elafonissi, you may want to visit some of the mountain villages, visit some ancient monasteries and historic monuments or hike one of the dramatic gorges.

Known as the Venice of the East, Chania Old Town is magical with unique shops lining its cobbled streets, a brilliant dining scene, trendy waterfront bars serving delicious cocktails and its famous Venetian harbour and imposing lighthouse. The harbour was originally built by the Venetians between 1320 and 1356 and is now a vibrant, cosmopolitan spot. The Egyptian lighthouse is much photographed, especially at sunset. You can take a slow meander to the lighthouse to take in the stunning views of the harbour, the Old Town and the backdrop of the majestic White Mountains. On the waterfront, the Giali Tzamisi is the oldest Muslim building in Crete. The Turkish name is translated to ‘The Seaside Mosque’. It plays host to various cultural events and exhibitions. One visit will not be enough!

Following the Minoan Palace of Knossos, the second most visited tourist attraction in Crete is the dramatic and imposing Samaria Gorge. It sits at the foothills of the White Mountains and is the longest and most famous gorge in Europe. Within the White Mountain’s National Park, it rises to an altitude of 1,230m, is 150m at its widest point and 3m at its narrowest and continues down to Agia Roumeli on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. The park and gorge offer protection to over four hundred and fifty species of plant and animal, of which seventy are endemic to Crete. This includes the rare kri-kri which are wild goats.

If you get time to visit Balos Beach, you will remember it forever. In the protected ‘NATURA’ area of Balos Bay, its glistening white sand and turquoise sea is incredible. Not far away is another Cretan wonder, Falasarna, another nestled lagoon with pool like waters and pink sand. It has been awarded the best beach of Crete and one of the top ten beaches in Europe.

How to reach Chania

There are two ways to reach Chania: either by flight or by ferry.

By plane:
Chania Airport (CHQ) is only a 20 minutes ride away from central Chania. During the summer months, frequents overseas and domestic flights are performed. In most of the cases, there are available buses that connect Chania city and most of the villas. You can also hire a car from one of the many rental companies at the airport, or alternatively get a taxi to bring you right to your doorstep.

By ferry:
If you choose to do an island-hopping trip and use the ferry as a method of transportation, then the closest port is in Souda, only 8km from the centre of Chania. Only ferries from Piraeus in Athens or Heraklion in Crete. Heraklion port has a wider choice: you can also take a ferry from other Greek islands like Santorini, Mykonos or Paros, but you will have to take a longer bus ride to reach your villa. You can easily book your ferry tickets using the link below or the booking engine.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Villa Katia is perfect for a family holiday. It is contemporary, spacious, enjoys a fabulous swimming pool and is only 150m from the beach. The villa offers a second living space which is perfect as a children’s play room or movie watching room. Older teenagers may also enjoy a workout in the gym. Kalamaki is a wonderful resort for families. It is very friendly and the sea is very shallow and warm.

Limnoupolis is a fun water park close to Chania boasting eleven exciting waterslides such as 100m giant slides, free fall slides, a black hole and triple twist slides, a kid’s pool and an artificial island. It also boasts a relaxing 130m lazy river, a huge swimming pool with a diving platform, a kiddie pool and a relaxation area.

Minoan’s World 3D Museum and 9D Cinema in Chania Town is popular. It is an immersive cinema where you can learn about the Minoan history while enjoying effects such as earthquakes and snow, bubbles and wind. There are many photo opportunities with murals in the background. The movie stars Zeus as a baby and as a God, abductions, flying too close to the sun and an eruption of the volcano in Santorini causing a devastasting tsunami that ended the Minoan era.

If you decide to visit Balos Beach, you can either drive or take a boat ride there. This is fun too. Just make sure you pack some refreshments and perhaps a beach parasol as there isn’t anything there to protect you from the sun.

The Botanical Park of Crete is a 20 hectare park, 18km from Chania. It boasts 150 species of fruit trees and hundreds of herbs, medicinal and ornamental plants that the Cretan mountains are famous for. It is home to many birds around the lake, butterflies, wild goat, hares, badgers, Cretan rock ferret, weasels and tree frogs. There is also a restaurant with amazing mountain views.

Lake Kournas is Crete’s largest freshwater lake and is fed by natural springs running off the Lefka Ori mountains. The water is 22m at its deepest and is a stunning turquoise colour. It is an excellent excursion with pedalos, lots of geese and terrapins and plenty of tavernas nearby. Close by is the Kanakis Olive Mill where you can learn all about the production of olive oil. You can taste the oil in the shop and pick up some souvenirs. You should also take a photograph with the 2000 year old olive tree outside.

Reviews

  • The villa is perfect!

    on 10/08/2023

Stavros the villa owner made us feel extremely welcome. The villa is perfect. It's modern, clean and near to the beach and local restaurants. I must also add the 'welcome pack' we received was amazing we have stayed in lots of villas previously, but have never received an abundance of essentials like it. Thank you!

  • Luxurious

    on 30/04/2019

We booked the villa to celebrate two family birthdays and the space worked perfectly for eight adults and one toddler. The villa was extremely luxurious and perfect for our family get together- stunning decor and spacious, well equipped bedrooms, each with added extras- toiletries bathrobes, slippers and TVs. Stavros was a great host. From fitting baby gates to stairs, to advising and booking restaurants for us, we felt he was really interested in ensuring we were able to make the most of what this lovely part of Crete has to offer. He even arranged courtesy drinks for us on the evening we celebrated birthdays in Sallis, Chania! I would definitely the Villa and we hope to return in the not too distant future!

  • Beautiful

    on 25/06/2018

I stayed at Villa Katia with five friends and we had a wonderful time. The villa was beautifully furnished and equipped with everything you would need--down to mixing bowls and bathrobes. Grocery stores, restaurants, and (of course) the beach were all nearby. I would definitely book again.
