Overview

Pool Ideal for Kids Walk to Village All Bedrooms En-Suite Not for little ones

Maison Gasquet is just perfect for a group of family and friends who want to spend time together in a wonderful part of Provence. What’s more, it’s only a fifteen minute walk from one of the most famous and charming towns of the region, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.

Inside there is an impressive kitchen for keen cooks and plenty of space downstairs for relaxing, reading, dining or just taking a break from the sunshine. All five bedrooms are full of character with antique furnishings and interesting artwork, each benefiting from en suite bathrooms and air-conditioning.

The upper garden has space for al-fresco lounging before stepping down for a dip in the pool where you can listen to the birdsong in the trees as you relax in the water. After your swim, it’s just a few steps along to the well-equipped air-conditioned gym or perhaps you would prefer to sip coffee in summer lounge or prepare lunch on the plancha-style barbecue.

St-Rémy is well known for its many fabulous eating places ranging from simple bistros to Michelin starred restaurants. If you are cooking at home, head to the Wednesday morning market where you can buy a huge variety of fresh produce, then have fun choosing your bottle of wine by joining one of the tasting tours at a local vineyard.

The much loved and widely recognised painting “Starry Night” was created by Van Gogh during his stay at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole nearby and many artists still live and work in St-Rémy. The town is in the heart of an area of extraordinary beauty and variety which contains historic cities like Avignon and Arles as well as exquisite hill top villages such as Les Baux-de-Provence, Gordes and Eygalières.

There are plenty of activities for all ages from gentle lavender scented rambles to more challenging hikes, horse riding, mountain biking and rock climbing in the hills and mountains of Les Alpilles and the Luberon. It is even possible to take a day trip to the magical Carmargue National Park with its wild white horses, pink flamingos and even more opportunity for fun and adventure.

Maison Gasquet enjoys a fantastic location in a residential area within a 15-minute walk to the charming town centre of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.

The town is famous for its many restaurants, from small bistros on quaint narrow streets to Michelin starred establishments. Food lovers will love the renowned Wednesday morning market which has a wide range of produce and wine aficionados will enjoy one of the private tours and tastings offered at the local vineyards. Many artists still live in St-Rémy and on selected summer Sundays the ‘Route des Artistes’ fills with them exhibiting and selling their work.

The Alpilles museum has useful information about the area and its heritage while Musée Estrine commemorates Van Gogh as well as displaying other regional artists. Vincent Van Gogh was hospitalised for over a year at the old asylum of St Paul de Mausole but still managed to paint during some of this time.

Les Alpilles Natural Park contains a huge variety of wildlife as well as being ideal for the energetic who can go rock climbing, horse riding, hiking and mountain biking along its many tracks and trails. There are some exquisite hill top villages here such as Eygalières, one of the prettiest spots in Provence and Les Baux-de-Provence, one of France’s acclaimed ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, a grey stoned medieval village perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the plains to the south.

In the foothills of the Monts de Vaucluse, Gordes is yet another beautiful village worth visiting, set in the glorious Luberon region with its mountains, gorges, lavender fields, woods and caves. This is yet another area for adventure seekers or those who simply want to admire the wonders of the landscape in a more leisurely way.

When it’s time for the bustle and atmosphere of the city, Avignon is a good place to start. Here are winding medieval streets and two UNESCO world heritage sites, the Pope’s Palace and Saint Benezet Bridge. At the weekend there are farmers’, flower and flea markets for fresh local produce and the opportunity to pick up a bargain or two.

Arles is another wonderful place to visit, with a fascinating historical past and well known for its architecture and Roman remains. It is also famous for its connection to Van Gogh who painted over 500 works of art during his relatively short time in this city he loved so much. You can drive onwards from here towards the white horses and pink flamingos of the Camargue.

Kids

Best Suited For: Teens
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Maison Gasquet accepts children aged 7 and above.

Provence is a wonderful place to holiday for kids of all ages. There are so many villages, towns and cities to discover where you can wander round the markets, watch local artists at work or just sit in a shady square with a cool drink.

There are also plenty of opportunities for outdoor sports and adventure - cycling, horse riding and mountain biking in the hills, rock climbing in Les Alpilles or the Luberon and pony clubs for younger guests.

In St-Rémy the Van Gogh path is fun to follow, where children have to look out for the sign-boards featuring paintings the artist made in the village. The nearby site of Glanum used to be a wealthy Roman city until it was partly buried and now many of its impressive buildings have been excavated.

Hire kayaks and canoes along the river Sorgue in Fontaine-de-Vaucluse or find more adventure at the fantastic tree-top activity centre in Salon-de-Provence. Young and old will love the model railway, the JardiTrain, found just south of Carpentras and there is little road train that takes you across the city of Avignon, including the famous bridge.

For animal lovers, Zoo La Barben is the place to go with over 600 species of animals in several hectares of land.
