Outdoor Pursuit & Activities
Part of Le Parc naturel régional des Alpilles in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, Maison des Artisans is located just outside a small Provençal village around 13km south of the artistic town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
The villa is in a partly residential area with other houses dotted around and backed by olive trees. Walk down the country road (no pavement for most of the way) passing other attractive houses, plane trees and towering pines, and soon you will reach the village. There are two high-end restaurants on the edge of the village (book ahead) whilst the small pretty centre is home to a boulangerie, café-restaurant and Spar grocery store.
Maussane-les-Alpilles (2.5km) is also very close by, a picturesque village with a variety of restaurants, some with atmospheric pavement terraces, as well as little shops and a Thursday morning market showcasing the best seasonal produce of this part of Provence. The village is famed for its olive oil and there are wonderful walks through the surrounding groves and farmland.
One of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, hilltop Les Baux-de-Provence (4km), is also close to your holiday villa and a must-visit – head there early before the tourist crowds arrive. Further north is artistic Saint-Rémy-de-Provence (13km), loved by visitors for its historic charm and artistic vibe, whilst Arles (17km) is also worthy of a visit thanks to its rich heritage and Van Gogh associations.
Other fantastic days out include the small and historic city of Avignon (39km) and the romantic University town of Aix-en-Provence (69km) or venture north towards the antique stores of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (44km), known for its Sunday morning brocante. Not forgetting the landscapes of the Camargue to the south with its salt marshes, lagoons, wild white horses and pink flamingos, an absolute paradise for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
