Overview
Le Prieure Esperance is a 17th century stone Presbytery sitting just above the Dordogne river, neatly restored inside and out to create an overall atmosphere of warmth and peace. Offering unspoilt views of the French countryside, guests can breakfast under the rising sun on their own private terrace before taking a morning dip in the large heated pool, or strolling amongst the lovingly manicured gardens.
The subtle mix of medieval and oriental inspired soft furnishings and exposed original oak beams and stonework give the interior a unique, yet homely feel that instantly puts visitors at ease. The grand stone fireplace only adds to this effect, as the centre piece of a large modern dining room. All spacious bedrooms are complete with flawless en-suite bathroom facilities.
In the courtyard of the villa there is a private, detached 17th Century chapel which can be used as a non-religious multifunctional space. It is heated/air-conditioned and has a "HK Lucas Performer" music system (compatible with media devices, I-phone etc) which allows guests to enjoy their choice of music in high definition and with excellent acoustics.
This is a holiday rental that oozes sophisticated luxury, from the silver dining cutlery to the un-chlorinated salt water pool, yet maintains a quaint rustic charm that is in line with that of the entire Dordogne region.
If you'd rather relax and fully enjoy a catered evening at the villa, two wonderful private chefs are at your disposal as well as a waitress service. You can even choose whether to eat in the chateau, chapel or al fresco! Enjoy your meal while you settle into this unique venue and start to immerse yourselves into the charming French lifestyle!

Region
One of France’s most visited destinations, Sarlat-la-Canéda is a beautiful medieval town with a superb reputation for its gastronomy. Staying near Sarlat allows you to experience the town’s rich heritage alongside its fine cuisine, whilst also being close to idyllic villages and natural scenery of the Périgord Noir, never far from the meandering Dordogne River.
Exquisitely restored, explore the old town with its warren of winding lanes with inviting shops, restaurants and characterful cafes. Take a guided tour to truly appreciate Sarlat’s rich history dating back to medieval and Renaissance times – the small yet attractive Cathédrale Saint-Sacerdos de Sarlat, once a Benedictine abbey, is one of the main highlights of the town.
Spend time learning all about the region’s gastronomy, best experienced at the traditional outdoor market on a Saturday or Wednesday morning. Local specialities are of course served in Sarlat’s many excellent restaurants or bought in little shops across the town – look out for foie-gras, truffles, honey, chestnuts and walnuts. There is also an organic market on Thursday afternoons and a charming covered market near the cathedral.
If staying in the height of the summer, join in one of the region’s marchés nocturnes in nearby villages where you can enjoy local food amongst locals accompanied by good wine and music.
Elsewhere, visit the grand châteaux of the Dordogne (Château des Milandes and Château de Beynac are both less than half an hour away from Sarlat), stroll around elegant gardens (Les Jardins de Marqueyssac by candlelight is especially atmospheric) and visit picture-perfect riverside villages such as La Roque-Gageac and Domme, both classified as ‘Plus Beaux Villages’. Heading north instead, the famous caves of Lascaux are also within easy reach.
Hot air balloon rides are a great way to admire the landscapes of the Périgord Noir or simply canoe along the Dordogne River in glorious surroundings. There are of course wonderful walks, tree-top adventure centres and fantastic cycling routes including the 29km-long voie verte stretching from Sarlat to Cazoulès following a former railway line passing magnificent Dordogne countryside.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesThe Dordogne is a wonderful region for families with children of all ages.
There are of course plenty of opportunities to hire kayaks or canoe and sail along the Dordogne River close by with seasonal watersport centres between Domme and Souillac. If you prefer admiring the riverside landscapes by boat with a skipper then set off on a traditional gabarre river cruise from La Roque-Gageac, just under half an hour away.
Take time to visit the incredible Château de Fénelon which is located close to the estate and venture slightly further afield to other wonderful castles including Château de Beynac and Château des Milandes – no wonder the Dordogne is known as the land of ‘1001 châteaux’!
Adventurous guests will enjoy the range of tree-top adventure trails just east of Sarlat at I Feel Wood accrobranche centre and La Forêt des Écureuils which also features via ferrata and paintballing.
Animal enthusiasts may adore a day out at the nearby Réserve Zoologique de Calviac where you follow trails (sometimes hilly) as you look out for animals from across the world.
Of course, there are also many wonderful walking paths to enjoy with your family as well as cycling trails including a fantastic and family friendly voie verte between Sarlat and Souillac which partly follows a former railway line.

Lovely Spot, Lovely Host
We had a wonderful stay at Le Prieure Esperance, which is a gorgeous location overlooking the surrounding country, and well located for visits to the prehistoric art sites, and the scenic towns and castles nearby. The pool is large and a great place for lounging, and eating dinner, and that was really all my kids needed. My only regret is that we did not have the host and chef cook dinner for us every night!
