Rapunzels Folie

Sleeps: 4 Bedrooms: 2 Bathrooms: 2

Wedding Venue Recommended Ideal for Kids Walk to Village All Bedrooms En-Suite

Romance and whimsy rule the day at this fantastical 15th century cottage in the Dordogne. Nestled on the shore of a lush, green lake, honeymooners will love to stargaze and watch wildlife from the private dock. Inside every room is unique, and the design plays with the delicate and the bold, the old and new. You’ll absolutely swoon for the bridal bed - a stately four-poster in a rustic barrel vaulted bedroom.

In the daytime, take a leisurely stroll through the gardens, and on to the nearby village of Nonards (1 km), where you’ll find the nearest pub. A little farther down the road is the medieval town of Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne (5 km), where restaurants and cafes are convenient to the riverside.

If you’ve time to tour the region, we recommend Périgueux, an hour and a half west. Here you can dig deep into history at the Perigord Museum of Art and Archaeology, or the Vesunne Museum, built on the remains of a Gallo-Roman villa. Périgueux is also known for markets, with delicacies aplenty - duck, chestnuts, foie gras, and truffles.

Good news! This property is available as a Vill’otel

Yey! Wait… what is that?
It’s the perfect combo of the privacy of your own personal villa, with all the luxury and convenience of a hotel.

Owner Profile

Property Owner
Lady Sarah

How long have you owned the property?
11 years

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
The romantic fairy-tale setting, nestling besides the river, with golden colored stone and its towers.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?
We have a bedroom where Napoleon's Marshal and Marshal Ney stayed after defeat at Waterloo, before capture. During the revolution it escaped burned as it was wet and the roof too slippery. It was a safe house for English airmen during the last war.

Have you ever had any famous guests staying?
Recently we have had just had a boy band heartthrob and his squeeze (who was an equally famous girl singer!)

What’s the strangest or most difficult guest request you’ve ever received?
They will remain nameless, as apparently the customer is always right!

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?
Canoeing on the Dordogne, and Hot air ballooning over the Chateaux.

Really eat?
The region is famous for Foie Gras, Truffles Duck, Chestnuts and Apples.

Really see?
Visit the most beautiful Villages that abound in this ancient area, plus the caves

Lastly, what insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
Be a lover of Peacocks, wild life, and nature...sitting on the terrace watching the stars, it's a complete contrast from city life!

The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.

The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with infamous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.

The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

  • Absolutely superb!

    Posted by Fiona on 30/11/2016

What a fabulous place to stay! We headed down from London in need of a relaxing few days, it could not have been more perfect. The gatehouse itself is exquisite, beautifully presented and furnished, equipped with everything we needed plus more. After a quick trip to the supermarket to stock up on food and wine we hardly ventured out for the rest of our stay. It was the perfect environment to just curl up in front of a crackling fire and let the world carry on without us for a few days. Thank you so much Chris for looking after us so well, we will be back in a few months for another battery recharge!

  • Absolutely wonderful place to stay
