Overview of Astier Petit Chateau Only

What Oliver loves…

  • The property sits right at the heart of the archaic French town of St Astier. The town offers a weekly traditional french market, several restaurants as well as bakeries and spa's.  Moreover, nearby activities such as canoeing, tennis and biking paths are in walking distance ensuring there is never a dull moment!
  • Very child and baby friendly boasting an unusually large 14 metre fenced pool as well as trampoline, swings, children's books and toys
  • Relaxed and cosy feel, a home away from home

What you should know…

  • Occasionally (3 nights a year) you can hear music from the garden. Otherwise it is a quiet oasis in the town centre
  • Beautifully contained walled gardens with lots of nooks and crannies and private space for everyone. But there is not 10 acres of property like in a remote chateau.

Set in the heart of a beautiful market town, yet entirely contained within private and quiet walled gardens, this petit chateau offers something for all ages, including a large, 14 metre pool. The chateau itself can sleep up to 8 guests comfortably.

Astier Petit Chateau is situated near a lovely market town that plays host to several events during the year, including night markets and local antiques brocants. With just a short walk from the house you can pick out your own seasonal vegetables, foie gras, local cheeses, olives, breads and much more. There are several restaurants, bars and bakeries within walking distance, as well as the tranquil River L'Isle which feeds into the Dordogne.

Interior & Grounds

The house comprises a large kitchen/breakfast room that opens onto the terrace and pool area; a large drawing room with classic stone fireplace ideal for winter parties; two large double rooms with en suite bathrooms; two large twin bedrooms with a modern family bathroom; and a DVD room with flat screen TV that can be converted into another double using a sofa bed if required.

The property opens onto beautiful mature walled gardens with electric gates at both ends and parking for up to four cars. Guests are welcome to help themselves to any seasonal fruits from the trees, including cherries, apples, grapes, peaches, apricots, pears and figs. The pool area is fenced with a child secure gate. There are several dining and seating areas around the garden and swings, a trampoline, slide and Wendy house to help occupy younger age groups. All amenities and restaurants are just a walk from the garden, including a tennis court.

Map, Location & Local Information

Astier Petit Chateau is situated in the heart of a lovely market town.  Every Thursday morning, a large French market transforms the tranquil town into a colourful scene, full of delights of the local region: seasonal vegetables, foie gras, local cheeses, olives, breads and much more. The town also holds several events through the year, including night markets and local antiques brocants.

There are several restaurants, bars and bakeries within walking distance. The River L'Isle, which feeds into the Dordogne, can be found a short distance from the chateau. Facials, beauty treatments, canoeing, tennis and mini golf are also just a short walk away. Alternatively, there are many lovely walks from the house up into the surrounding hills.

The Region

The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.

The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with infamous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.

The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

Owner Profile

Property Owner
Philida

How long have you owned the property?
08 years.

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
Its location in the heart of a perfect small town so you could walk to everything.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?
The owner who built the property was the manager of the famous shoes factory "Astor shoes", which was a big industry in St Astier in the 1950s and 1960s. These hand made leather shoes could be found in John Lewis.
St Astier was one of the first towns in the Dordogne to get it's own railway station due to it's thriving 19th century industry.
The original chalk factory still runs today and provides some of the best quality rendering in the world (it's often used on beautiful white Georgian facades such as the town houses found on Brighton seafront).
St Astier also has a goat's cheese factory where you can buy it's products directly (or find them in your local Sainsburys!). Another export is cinema seats, the St Astier factory made the seats in the Sydney Opera House.
Going back a little further in time you can enjoy the medieval center of the town or take a walk up to the original Chapel du Bois where the town was first founded.

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?

Grab a basket and go to the local market on Thursday. Go to St Emilion; Aubeterre; Sarlat; Perigueux, Brantome, La Jemaye and canoe down the l'Isle river.

Really eat?
Foie gras, confit de canard, local french caviar and walnut oil.

Really see?
The local chateaus and gardens including Hautefort, Chateau de Montreal, Les jardins Imaginaire.

Lastly, what insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
Walk to the everything and leave the car behind; tennis, biking, walking, eating, drinking, local shops, the market, the river... There is so much to do and see!
