A vibrant seaside town with an abundance of Dalmatian charm, Makarska lies along the stunning Makarska Riviera, which stretches from Split to Dubrovnik on Croatia’s sun-drenched Adriatic coastline. While a treasure trove of scenic beaches is often seen as the town’s main attraction, Makarska offers visitors a distinctive cultural heritage, excellent gastronomic experiences, beautiful architecture and diverse landscapes to enjoy.

After a morning spent lounging by your private pool, take an afternoon stroll along the town’s pretty promenade before wandering the cobblestone streets of the old town to the main square. Here, you will find beautiful St. Mark’s Church with its spectacular mountain backdrop, as well as plenty of charming cafes and restaurants. Stop for a coffee and watch the world go by before enjoying a leisurely lunch of fresh seafood or Makarska pašticada, a traditional beef dish from the region. During the summer months, the picturesque squares of Makarska come alive, with local festivals and music events taking place in the old town.

For something a little different, visit the town’s astronomical observatory, a striking building located on a green hill in the town centre, where the conditions are ideal for stargazing. The observatory is open from June to September, offering visitors the opportunity to learn more about the magic of the night sky from a truly unique setting. For a glimpse into Makarska’s colourful past, visit the historic Franciscan Monastery near the harbour, home to a baroque bell tower, an impressive art gallery and an extensive library of rare books. A magnificent contemporary mosaic behind the altar attracts many visitors to the Monastery, while the Shell Museum on the grounds displays a collection of over three thousand seashells worldwide.

Lively Makarska Beach stretches from the harbour to the western side of the town for almost two kilometres. Water sports enthusiasts will be delighted by the facilities on offer here, while the promenade offers plenty of cafes, bars and ice cream shops, which are enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. For those in search of more secluded shores, Nugal Beach provides a pristine coastline sheltered by rocky cliffs, which can only be accessed on foot or by boat. The crystal-clear waters of nearby Solaric Beach are ideal for swimming and snorkelling, while the beach at Biloševac on the northern edge of Makarska is easily accessible, surrounded by fragrant pine trees and great for families and groups of friends.

For a day trip to remember, hop on a boat to the enchanting island of Brač, where more breathtaking beaches and scenic coastal towns can be reached in just under an hour. Catamaran tours also take in the stunning natural beauty of Korčula and Mljet, while Hvar is another very popular option. Meanwhile, closer to home, hikers and nature lovers will be keen to explore the limestone peaks of Biokovo, the majestic mountain range that forms the spellbinding backdrop to Makarska.

Region

Makarska, perched between the Biokovo mountain range and the glistening waters of the Adriatic Sea, is a stunning destination where nature's grandeur takes centre stage. The imposing mountains rise dramatically behind the town, creating a striking backdrop for the entire region. With its distinct Mediterranean climate, visitors can expect warm summers and mild winters, making it an ideal year-round destination.

The Riva - the town's seafront promenade - is a focal point of the community, where locals and visitors alike gather to soak up the Mediterranean atmosphere. Lined with palm trees and a variety of cafes, restaurants, and boutiques, the Riva is the perfect place to unwind, take in the scenic views of the sea and settle into the Croatian pace of life. As the sun sets over the Adriatic, Makarska comes alive with a vibrant nightlife scene. The Riva transforms into a lively hub of entertainment, with street performers, live music, DJ sets, and a chance to mingle with locals and fellow travellers.

If you're a history enthusiast, Makarska's rich heritage and historic sites will surely pique your interest. The Church of St. Mark, built in the early 18th century, stands as a testament to the region's strong Catholic tradition. The Baroque architecture and stunning altarpieces make it a notable religious landmark.

For a deeper dive into the past, the Makarska Franciscan Monastery, founded in the 16th century, houses an impressive collection of artefacts including ancient manuscripts and artwork. The most famous is the Makarska Beach itself, stretching for almost 2 kilometres and offering a plethora of water sports, sunbathing spots, and beachfront cafes. While sunbathing and swimming are the primary draws, you can also indulge in snorkelling, paddle-boarding, and jet skiing to experience the vibrant underwater world of the Adriatic.

Heading north along the Makarska Riviera, you’ll come to the town of Brela, famed for its pristine beaches. One of the best, Punta Rata, is often ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world. The crystal-clear waters and the iconic Brela Rock jutting from the sea make it a picture-perfect spot for sunbathing and swimming.

The Biokovo Nature Park, often overshadowed by the coast, offers a different but equally wonderful experience. Here, the rugged mountain terrain allows for hiking, trekking, and adventure in the heart of nature. There are several well-marked trails that lead you through lush forests, up to the highest peak of Sveti Jure (St. George), providing breathtaking panoramic views of the Adriatic and the surrounding islands.

Day trips to nearby destinations are also a great way to explore the broader region. The islands of Hvar and Brač are easily accessible by ferry and make for fantastic day excursions. Hvar is known for its beautiful old town and lavender fields, while Brač is famous for the stunning Zlatni Rat beach.

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...

Really do?
You are in a part of town called Batinići. If you walk along the hill you will reach two old villages: Puharići and Makar from where you can have a beautiful view of the whole city. We suggest that you walk to Makar before going to the city and the whole city will look like in the palm of your hand.

Pictures of a stunning new vantage point at top the Biokovo mountain range offer an exciting prospect for anyone visiting the Makarska Riviera this summer. The new Skywalk viewpoint sits 1228 meters above sea level and will offer incredible views of the Adriatic, towns like Makarska and Tučepi plus the islands of Brač and Hvar.

Extending some 12 meters out into the skies from the mountain at Ravna Vlaska, the viewing platform will surely test the nerve of anyone who gets wobbly knees when high up, not least because much of the structure is built from super-thick glass.

Really eat?

For lunch or dinner we suggest restaurants that have homemade food. All of these restaurants have daily lunch menus. We suggest you try: PASTICADA WITH GNOCCHI or Macaroni which is one of traditional dishes in Makarska.

Really see?
Makarska has beautiful beaches that you can reach and walk (if you like to walk) you go on the road with which you came only straight and after 800m you will fly straight into the sea.If you want to see the beach that Vogue has declared one of the most beautiful in the world, Nugal beach, you will reach the Osejava peninsula (it has a large parking lot) and walk about 2km and thus reach the beautiful beach. Along with Makraska, beautiful beaches have other places nearby such as Tucepi, Podgora, Igrane or on the other side Baska Voda or Brela.
