As Croatia’s largest island, Krk is a popular destination which incorporates the airport of the country’s third-largest city, Rijeka. Known as the ‘Golden Isle’, it’s scenic enough in its own right, and serves as a good base for exploring the north of the country too – a bridge connects Krk to the mainland.

The town that shares the island’s name is well worth a look, lined with beautiful beaches and good cultural attractions. The city walls date back more than 2000 years, while the Frankopan Castle which sits overlooking the sea has its roots in the 12th century. Krk Cathedral, or the Cathedral of the Assumption, is of a similar vintage and is one of the stand-out sights of the Old Town. Meanwhile, the pretty harbourside promenade is filled with café terraces and bars.

The Zlahtina wine made around Vrbnik – a very pretty medieval village on the island’s eastern coast – is one of Krk’s foodie highlights. It’s not difficult to eat well here, or in idyllic surroundings. Restaurants will often set up where the best sea views are, serving excellent Mediterranean and Croatian cuisine in the fresh air. Tavern-like konobas can also be found in towns all over Krk.

Sun-drenched Baška’s 2km-long pebble beach with crystal-clear waters is just one of the island’s very popular beaches, with visitors enjoying water sports or simply grabbing a sun lounger. Often a little quieter, you could also try the similarly named Stara Baška if you head through the hills to Krk’s milder southwestern side.

Whether you prefer scuba-diving, hiking in the mountains or cycling, there is always something active you can do on Krk. Zip-lining, rock climbing and quad biking are all possible, while various boat hire centres will get you out on the water.

Its airport may be on the island, but the busy port of Rijeka is situated across the water. The city is certainly a mix of old and new, but there are plenty of notable sights worth your time, including Trsat Castle, which sits high above the town. There’s a lively energy to the place, which is especially evident at carnival time (Jan – Mar) and during the summer festival.

About 20 minutes drive west is the upscale spa resort of Opatija, one of the highlights of the Kvarner Riviera – the glorious Lungomare promenade is the place to see and, indeed, be seen.

Region

Krk, the largest island in the Kvarner Gulf, offers visitors an enchanting blend of natural beauty and vibrant culture. This island paradise, with its captivating landscapes, historic towns, and warm Mediterranean climate, has rightly earned its reputation as one of Croatia's top tourist destinations.

Krk's rugged and diverse geography is a significant part of its appeal. The island boasts a picturesque coastline with countless coves, bays, and pristine beaches to explore. For those looking to relax and unwind, Krk’s beautiful, serene beaches Baska Beach and Malinska Beach are perfect spots to unwind. The calm, crystal-clear waters and warm sun provide an ideal setting for a peaceful day by the sea.

The Adriatic Sea provides the perfect playground for water sports enthusiasts - kayaking, windsurfing and jet-skiing are all popular activities around the island. The crystal-clear waters are also perfect for snorkelling and diving. Many tour operators on the island offer family-friendly excursions where you can explore the underwater world and observe marine life together. Krk also has several marinas, making it a popular stop for sailors and boaters exploring the Adriatic.

Krk’s landscape also includes lush greenery and rolling hills, ideal for hiking and cycling. Numerous bike paths and trails wind through the miles of untouched nature. Whether you're an experienced cyclist or a novice, you can explore the island at your own pace or join one of the many bike tours on offer, enjoying the fresh air and breathtaking scenery. The serene countryside offers splendid vistas, and the scents of Mediterranean herbs like rosemary and lavender fill the air.

The city of Krk, the island's main hub, is a charming blend of history and modernity. The well-preserved ancient city walls and medieval architecture are a testament to its storied past. One of the most iconic landmarks is the Frankopan Castle, a magnificent fortress that dates back to the 12th century. The island also boasts numerous churches and chapels, including the Cathedral of St. Mary, which features Romanesque and Gothic elements, and the small church of St. Donatus, one of the oldest on the island.

Krk's culinary scene is a rooted in the Croatian lifestyle, emphasising locally sourced ingredients and flavours. The island's cuisine is known for its use of olive oil, fresh seafood, and an array of herbs. In the picturesque towns and villages, you'll find cozy family-run restaurants and taverns offering hearty traditional dishes like "šurlice," a homemade pasta, and "pašticada," a slow-cooked beef stew. The island is also renowned for its sheep cheese, such as “šur", and the exceptional local wine "Žlahtina," which pairs perfectly with the island’s fresh seafood. Dining in a konoba, a traditional Croatian tavern, allows you to savour the essence of Krk's cuisine while enjoying the warm hospitality of the locals.

While Krk itself has so much to offer, it also serves as a gateway to explore the wider Kvarner region and the nearby islands. A short ferry ride connects Krk to Cres, Rab, and other smaller islands, each with their own unique charm and attractions. The proximity to the mainland makes it easy to embark on day trips to cities like Rijeka and Opatija, famous for their historic architecture and buzzing cultural scenes.

Krk offers a diverse range of experiences for travellers seeking natural beauty, history, culture, and delicious cuisine. With its rich history, warm hospitality, and breathtaking landscapes, Krk has rightfully earned its place as one of Croatia's top tourist destinations. Whether you're looking for adventure, relaxation, or a cultural experience, this “Golden Island” island has it all.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

The island of Krk is great for a family holiday, especially if beaches are your thing. Many are suitable for children, with good facilities, playgrounds and the like. Near the centre of Krk Town, Portapisana is a Blue Flag beach with pedalos, parasols and cafés, while Vrbnik has the lovely Zgribnica Beach. Baška is one of the island’s best-known and most popular beaches and has play areas and slides, but be aware that it can get crowded in summer.

There are many opportunities to take the kids on a boat trip, whether it’s in a glass-bottomed craft with views into the ocean or in a semi-submarine to see an underwater sculpture park. There are amusement parks in Krk, Malinska and Baška, and a tourist train that rides along the coast.

An impressive sight is found underground in the village of Rudine, about 15 minutes drive north of Klimno. The Biserujka Cave is an important site as it hosts a variety of wildlife, such as crustaceans and beetles. Some interesting discoveries have also been made there – the remains of a 16,000-year-old cave bear were found at Biserujka.  The well-lit cave interior offers designated trails and attracts plenty of visitors.

Krk is also big on aquariums, with Adriatic sea creatures on display in Krk Town and Baška, where there are more than 100 species of fish and one of Croatia’s largest collections of shells and snails. There are lizards, chameleons and more at the Krk Aquarium-Terrarium, while a Tropical Aquarium near Krk’s central Vela Place square has clownfish, shellfish and much more.

A spectacular view of scenic Krk is the reward for braving the Edison Zipline, one of the island’s most adventurous, adrenaline-fuelled attractions. About 10 minutes from Vrbnik, this is an unforgettable experience that even younger children can enjoy, provided they team up with an instructor. You'll want to book ahead if you’re there during the summer.

If you’re willing to travel off the island, stunning areas like the Učka Natural Park and the ever-popular Plitvice Lakes make great excursions. A little closer, a day in the bustling city of Rijeka is sure to entertain the kids – an Astronomical Centre with a planetarium, and a fun computer museum called Peek & Poke (because you can), are among its quirkier points of interest.
