Callander House really is one-of-a-kind, it is the private residence of the Scottish artist Stuart McAlpine Miller and his wife, Nikki. It beautifully showcases the unique and contemporary style of the artist and makes a wonderfully unique base for your Scottish escape. It holds a fabulous location nestled amongst twelve acres of private land with uninterrupted views over Ben Ledi and the Highlands and makes the perfect base for exploring Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.

The house can accommodate up to twenty-two guests across twelve luxurious bedrooms. The impressive living accommodation can be found on the ground floor and comprises of a 100ft reception room, a morning room boasting a baby grand piano and a spectacular dining room with bespoke seating featuring “The Savoy Series” of artworks. The library makes a cosy place to curl up with a good read next to the open fire while the entertainment room with its 7-foot pool table is the perfect way to spend an evening with close friends and family.

Heading upstairs, on the main floor guests will find the Emperor suite with its impressive feature Jacuzzi and an assortment of four poster and king-size double bedrooms. Upstairs again, on the third floor are a further three double bedrooms which share the use of a luxury family bathroom, a self-contained kitchen area and a turret cinema room! Going back downstairs, on the basement gallery level are a further three bedrooms, family bathroom boasting luxury double shower as well as the art gallery where a range of art works, including the luxury silk sleepwear are available to purchase.

Outside, the 12 acres of gardens are completely private surrounded by mature trees, hedges and the River Teith to the west, the property has fishing rights to both salmon and trout. Owner Profile

Property Owners
Nikki & Stuart

How long have you owned the property?
Only 8 months, we purchased the property late 2016 and have since until now lovingly renovating it from a traditional baronial property to the contemporary interior you see today.

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?

Where do I start?  Our search area consisted of France, Spain and most of England. We ultimately fell in love with the house, it’s elegance and beautifully proportioned rooms. Every window offers a stunning view, like looking out onto a painting.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?

The property has a rich history and dates from 1835. It was substantially rebuilt after a fire in 1901. The property was interestingly commissioned as hospital in the second world war for norwegian soldiers. In more recent years it has been both a school for boys and a small hotel.

Do you have a favourite room in the property?

It would have to be the main sitting room, the floor to ceiling windows offer uninterrupted views over the River Teith and Ben Ledi, the sunsets really are incredible.

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...

Really do?
Walking! The best way to see the Highlands is on foot. We are surrounded by waterfalls, mountains and lochs. Even though this is a popular area the unspoilt beauty and peacefulness of the highlands transports you back in time. We are also situated on the popular hiking route of Rob Roy Way.

Really eat? Anything from our kitchen garden or fish from the river!

Really see?

I would suggest hiring a car and driving to see the Lochs, for the journey as well as the destination.. We have Loch Venachar with its amazing café overlooking the water.  The famous Loch Katrine steamship. Loch Lubnaig, Loch Achray and the Lake of Mentieth (Scotlands only Lake with its monastery) plus Loch Lomond which is great for watersports are all on our doorstep. You can even take a canoe from the property

The property is also a perfect base for exploring the highlands and islands with stunning places such as the white sands of Arisaig (you could almost be in the Bahamas on a sunny day!), the beautiful remote Glencoe and Oban, the gateway to the islands, are all within 2 hours drive.

What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?

Great cycle paths and you can even drink the water.

  • The real wow factor!

    Posted by Amanda on 05/03/2020

Looking for a location for my 50th birthday, I came across Callander House and was blown away by the website images and video.

It is not cheap but my (wonderful) husband was adamant that we were booking it as soon as I wrote down "wow" against my pros/cons versus another possible location.

We have booked various castle locations for "big birthdays" over the past 20 years but you will never find anything like Callander House. The owners' own pop-artwork and designer clothing is in evidence throughout the property, mixed with wonderful object d'art which you will keep spotting during the stay. The creative style of the owners is unique and makes a fascinating conversation piece with all the guests.

All the rooms are individual and the bathrooms are outstanding. The copper bath is a showstopper. Downside is that most guests need to share bathrooms (although they are amazing, most people are not used to that when staying away) but its a worthwhile compromise.

The bar room was the hub of our evenings, with people drinking & chatting while some played pool and others were dancing and signing. It really is an amazing party room. The kids enjoyed the cinema in the turret, keeping them quiet!

We did a mix of self catering and private chef. The chef did interactive cooking with the kids (they loved it) and the formal adults dinner was superb.

Euan the housekeeper was fantastic throughout : taking delivery/unpacking supermarket delivery pre our arrival, he also manned our bar on our cocktail evening & served the bubbly pre-dinner drinks as well as the wine at our black tie dinner. The housekeeping was very efficient too.

I'm sure Nikki & Stuart are incredibly proud of their home and they have every right to be. They are obviously wonderfully creative in many ways (even down to the wonderful scents emanating from the diffusers). Thank you so much for allowing us to share this for a wonderful long weekend with the people that I love most in this world - my friends & family x

  • Fabulous!

    Posted by D.O on 13/02/2020

We rented Callander House or a long weekend of celebrations, birthdays with '0's. Its absolutely fabulous. Words can not tell you what a fabulous space this is for gathering friends and family. We scottish danced, we had a fabulous dinner, we walked with the local Ghillie, had falconry from Loch Lomond at the Castle, and the Unicorn Experience. The catering chefs produced lovely food for us and the house manager is absolutely amazing. 5 stars at least this deserves. thank you to the owners for opening up their special home so we could enjoy it.

  • Blown away...

    Posted by Marc on 19/12/2019

We had the pleasure of spending the weekend at Callander House for my wife’s surprise birthday. My wife, our friends and our family that came with us were blown away by the house.

Everything about the house is perfect, from the huge dining room that seated our group of 24, to the amazing bar area where we had a band playing and held a wine tasting, to the uniquely decorated bedrooms, to the cinema on the top floor, to the beautiful library........ this house is exquisite.

With the combination of Nikki’s interior touch and Stuart’s artwork the house keeps you intrigued from room to room.

Nikki organised Clay Pigeon shooting and fishing for the guys. The girls had masseuses come to the house for massages and we had the legendary Jack Black come to dinner on Saturday evening to tell the story of Scotland.

I couldn’t recommend Callander House highly enough. This house will suit any special occasion. We can’t wait to come back. Thanks so much for sharing your home with us.

  • Lived the dream!

    Posted by Annie on 23/10/2019

Well I can finally say I’ve lived the dream - what a wonderful experience it is to stay at Callander House.

The scenery is idyllic, and walks breathtaking, which augers well as you immerse your self in the relaxed splendour. The interior is something that immediately speaks to you, with your senses delighted by the signature artwork of Stuart McAlpine-Miller both on the walls and amazing silk prints. But it’s not just bricks and mortar that make a place - it’s the people. We were made to feel so welcome that it immediately felt like a home from home.

I couldn’t recommend Callander House more Highly.

  • The best!

    Posted by V on 24/02/2019

Had the most amazing time at Callander House and can not wait to come back. The whole house is fabulous. James looked after us very well as did the owners sister who is just lovely. If you want special then you visit Callander House, just so so wonderful. Food amazing, drink fab, hosts brill, thank you for such a great time and making memories.

  • Perfect unique venue!

    Posted by Philippe on 27/01/2019

Callander House is very special. It is a modern and very comfortable house with amazing art, giving a unique feel and experience. The bedrooms spread is excellent with amazing bathrooms. We booked for a birthday, everyone will remember their weekend.
We were 21 to Clay Pigeon shooting organised by the house, that was memorable with fantastic people running it, surrounded by most beautiful Scotland.
The communication with the owner Nikki was easy and professional. The staff, Chef and agents could not have been nicer, helpful and efficient.
I do hope we will have another event in the future at Callander House, Bravo! and a big thank you to everyone involved.
