Old Queens manor is a handsome manse set in peaceful countryside with glorious views to the Cotswolds and over the River Severn to Wales. The only noises to be heard are happy birdsongs, and there are woodpeckers in the ancient hornbeams and thrushes on the lawn.

At night, when guests swim in the gently lit heated swimming pool in the orchard, they are surrounded by owls calling and glow-worms shining through the shrubbery.

If guests can tear themselves away from the tennis court, croquet lawn, the beautiful local walks and quintessential British cooking, the attractions of Bath are only an hour drive away. Bath is famous for its Roman baths that attract tourists from far and wide. The city of Bristol is also only half an hour away by car, a busy city with many restaurants, shops and an energetic night life.

Old Queens Manor is an elegant and beautifully built Victorian house with all its original features intact.

As you enter through the Gothic front floor to a flag-stoned hall, on the right there is a very comfortable living room with a marble surround open fireplace, armchairs and an antique rug. Here there is also a bookshelf where you will find books about local walks and attractions to enhance your holiday experience. The dining room on the opposite side of the hallway also has a magnificently restored fireplace and open fire, large window and a large table that comfortably seats 10.

There is a media room with a new wide-screen, mounted high definition television with DVD player and a CD player with speakers. There is also an extensive collection of DVD’s, videos, books and games in the antique dresser for your enjoyment.

The flag-stoned kitchen has an oil-fired Aga, a large table with stools that can seat up to 10 and an antique dresser with all cutlery and crockery. There is a washing machine, a large fridge freezer and all other modern amenities. Views from the kitchen window overlook the courtyard, the fields beyond and the Cotswolds. The ground floor also has a butler’s pantry with further kitchen equipment and a microwave oven.

The kitchen leads down to the spacious stone floored cloakroom where tennis rackets, balls and swimming towels are kept for your use. The washing machine, clothes dryer, iron and iron board are kept in the utility room that is accessible via the cloakroom.  A door from the cloakroom leads to the courtyard and the garage, where a large table tennis table and table football are both kept.

The main stairs lead from the hall to the first floor where there are three double bedrooms and two twin rooms. One double and one twin share a newly installed shower room with basin and toilet and the second twin and double share a huge family bathroom with bath, shower, basin and lavatory. The master bedroom has its own en-suite bathroom with a shower. All bedrooms are equipped with extremely comfortable mattresses and linen, matching throws, curtains and cushions. All have open fireplaces and extensive views. The house is also heated throughout with traditional cast iron radiators.

The house is set in just over two acres of garden; the lawn's surrounding is bordered by beautiful trees and shrubbery with sheltered and sunny areas for relaxing. There is also a wooden table, chairs and bench for those wanting to relax in the sun enjoying a cold glass of wine. Stone steps lead onto the flat croquet lawn and an immaculate astro-turf tennis court next door. There is an established orchard with apple, plum and cherry trees and a children’s play hut on stilts with a ladder, hidden amongst the bamboo plants.

Whilst visiting Old Queens Manor you will feel incredibly relaxed, enjoying the countryside and soaking up the sounds and sights of nature; watch the nesting house-martins swoop over the garden in the late afternoon and in the evening there are bats silently flitting across the lawns.

Your obligations
- You agree to comply with the Regulation attached to these terms and conditions set out in the property manual and any other regulations reasonably made from time to time and ensure that they are observed by all members of your party.
- You agree to keep and leave the Property and the furnishings, kitchen equipment, crockery, glasses clean and in good condition.
- You agree not to cause any damage to the walls, floor or carpets or doors or windows of the Property nor to do anything that may be reasonably considered to cause a nuisance or annoyance to us or to any other occupier of adjoining or neighbouring properties.
- Please maintain appropriate protection for wooden table surfaces when placing hot containers on them. Mats are in place in the kitchen, pantry and dining room furniture drawers.
- Please do not put liquid fat down the sink as this blocks the drains.
- You agree to take all necessary precautions to ensure your own safety around and in the swimming pool in particular:
Keep the swimming pool cover closed as all times when not in use, as this is a safety device. There is no fence as the closed electronic cover acts to prevent accidental falls by young children into the pool.

- Please do not attempt to wind back cover when there is still water on it, otherwise the cover will be damaged.

- Do not bring glass into the pool area.
- Do not introduce any substance liable to cause damage into the pool, such as food or drink which will render water unhygienic.
- Please wash off sun protection prior to entry to pool as the residue forms a greasy layer on the water and tiles which is difficult to clean and can also block the filters.
- Wash feet prior to entering the water under the tap by the pool to remove grass cuttings etc which will block filter and render pool unusable.
- Do not at any time stand sit or walk on the cover whether closed, or partially closed as this will break it rendering the pool a safety hazard or inaccessible.
- Please do not tamper with machines/chemicals inside pool house.
- Please ask for any advice/demonstration necessary for any problems or perceived problems during use or anticipated use of the swimming pool.
- The owners cannot be held responsible for any accidents or loss of life while pool is being used.
- Disposal of waste items and rubbish in the house.

- The waste water and all waste is pumped from the property to join the mains sewage system in the road outside; the pump will be impeded by flushed nappies, toilet wipes, face wipes and sanitary towels or tampons. In this case the pump will be damaged. A lined bin is provided for these items. The pump will not be impeded by the normal toilet paper provided.
- Please place all recyclable waste in the containers provided.
- You agree to take all necessary steps to safeguard your personal property. No liability to you is accepted in respect of damage to or loss of such property, except where the damage or loss is caused by our negligence.

If you do so, we can refuse to hand over the Property to you, or can require you to leave it. We will treat any of these circumstances as a cancellation of the booking by you.
- You agree to allow us or any representative of ours access at any reasonable time during your stay for the purpose of essential repairs including the gardeners.

- The cost of damages to the property will be subtracted from the damages deposit; if the cost of damages exceeds the damages deposit you will be liable for payment. You may feel it is worth while taking holiday insurance to cover third party damages.

- Every effort has been made to ensure that you have an enjoyable and memorable holiday. If however, you have any cause for complaint it is important that remedial action is taken as soon as possible.
- It is essential that you contact us if any problem arises so that it can be speedily resolved. It is often extremely difficult (and sometimes impossible) to resolve difficulties properly unless we are promptly notified. Discussion of any criticisms with us whilst you are in residence will usually enable shortcomings to be rectified straightaway. In particular, complaints of a transient nature (for example, regarding preparation or heating of the Property) cannot possibly be investigated unless registered whilst you are in residence.

Property Owner

How long have you owned the property?

17 years

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?

Everything! Beautiful symmetrical house with spacious frindly feel, views from the windows, space and peace outside.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?

It's an early Victorian Rectory beautifully built to attract the best kind of rector!

Have you ever had any famous guests staying?

My husband is a Professor of Neurosurgery and we have had many eminent guests to stay while we were living there; I'm a writer and I take my writing group, some of whom are also published authors, for retreats and workshops when we dont have guests.

What’s the strangest or most difficult guest request you’ve ever received?

Having bought up 5 children there nothing seems strange or difficult, I've seen it all before!

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...

Really do?

The country side around is lovely but most guests are captured by the sense of peace the warm pool and the space, and don't leave the place all week!

Really eat?

The Anchor 3 minutes away does a great roast dinner. We can also provide a chef who makes the most fantastic food boeuf bouginon I've ever eaten.

Really see?

The woodpecker in the garden, the view over the Severn from the church. If you are energetic there is lovely architecture in nearby Bath.

Lastly, what insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?

Use it to unwind, there is something magical that works on most guests, who arrive looking hassled but leave looking rested and happy.

  • We were so happy with our choice

    Posted by Adrian on 30/07/2018

    Fantastic home and location!

  • Wonderful space for quality family time! To make wonderful memories!

Posted by Sushma S on 06/06/2018

We had a lovely half-term break at Old Queens Manor. It was an ideal space to unwind and spend quality time together for my dads birthday.
It was also a beautiful area with plenty to do!

  • Lovely house and large garden for celebration

Posted by Jennifer M. on 20/04/2018

A perfect location for family celebration of 3 generations aged 2 - 73 for a 40th birthday! Very friendly and helpful owners who helped to make our stay happy and relaxed. The grandchildren adored the large garden, and especially a slightly belated Easter egg hunt! Plenty of room inside the house for the different generations to spread out when needed! Great to have the AGA too and memorable meals were produced and enjoyed! We hope we may return one day!

  • Peace and space with enough to do for everyone

Posted by Katie S. on 06/04/2018

We stayed with our young adult sons who loved the tennis court. They managed to play even in-between rain showers. The views and sense of space both inside and outside the property made for an especially relaxing stay. The kitchen is very well equipped and we hosted a Sunday lunch in the lovely dining room with ease and making good use of the Aga. We made use of the excellent DVD collection and the games cupboard. We had taken our own books but spotted many good reads in the house.
Locally the walks and the pubs were excellent. Although it was very muddy the boot room and utility by the back door meant that we could keep the rest of the house clean. Our small dog got used to going straight to the sink for a rinse.
We can imagine that in the summer the pool would add even more delight to any holiday in this wonderful house.

  • Absolutely wonderful

Posted by Beth R. on 10/01/2018

We had a fabulous time in this wonderful property. A perfect place to welcome in the New Year, well equipped with gorgeous gardens, the Severn estuary and a great pub are a short stroll away. Would highly recommend!

  • Such a beautiful property!

Posted by Polly M. on 14/10/2017

We descended on the Old Queens Manor for a long weekend in October to celebrate my Mother-In-Law's 60th Birthday. There were 10 adults and two toddlers. It took us a while to find somewhere suitable as we wanted somewhere that was special and also big enough for us all to enjoy, and boy did the Old Queens Manor deliver. The house and it's grounds are stunning!!
Starting with the house, it has everything you could wish for to make your stay comfortable. It was beautifully maintained and fully equipped. You can tell it is a house that was/is very much loved as it holds a lot of charm whilst also feeling modern at the same time. For such a big house it was surprisingly cosy and I think we all could've quite happily lived there!
The grounds were beautiful and every bit was utilised. We had tennis and table tennis matches going on between the adults and the toddlers loved running around the expansive gardens seeing what treasures they could find.
Whilst staying at the rectory we went for a looped walk direct from the house out to the Severn and back. A nice little walk with a pub stop in the middle (well it'd be rude not to!) We also went for Sunday lunch at The Anchor in the village which was excellent. Decent sized portions too!
Jane, the owner, is superb and my only regret is that I didn't get to meet her in the end to say hello personally. Great communication throughout the whole booking process and she really went the extra mile to make sure that you were enjoying your stay and had everything you needed.

  • Beautiful House And Grounds

We spent a long weekend at the the house to celebrate our Golden Wedding Anniversary with our family - ten of us with ages ranging from 3 to 75. We had a wonderful time making full use of the lovely house, extensive grounds, swimming pool and tennis court. Everything we needed was provided and Jane was very helpful particularly in answering our many questions. It was such a happy celebration in a perfect setting that the family would love to do it again! We would have no hesitation in recommending the house

  • Wonderful house and gardens in a quiet location

booked The Rectory to celebtate special birthdays with family and friends and a wonderful time was had by all. It is a a large house but with a homely feel about it and we loved the home cooked family meals in the kitchen. We did spend most time in the beautiful gardens playing tennis til dusk swimming and a couple of BBQs and Table tennis when it got dark! The four year old loved running around and playing on the swing and said it was perfect! The only thing I would have added was a lounger by the pool for the sunny days.
The owner Jane is most helpful and I would certainly recommend for a mixed age group holiday.

  • Wonderful House

We spent a family birthday weekend here and it was wonderful. The house has plenty of space, is beautifully maintained and lovely in every way. The vast garden is great not only for children but adults too. The swimming pool is a good size and was always at a very pleasing temperature. The tennis court is another great feature and was almost as well used by us as the pool. The Anchor pub is just a short walk. It has a good beer garden and serves reasonable food. Well worth a visit.

  • A perfect family holiday!

Posted by Sue T on 01/09/2016

We stayed at Old Queen's Manor in early August 2016. It was a family holiday where three generations were able to meet up and spend a week together. As we are spread around the country this rarely happens.
Jane was there to greet us and gave us some key information about the property and some 'house rules'. This was all delivered in a gentle, friendly manner and was very helpful - particularly the information on how to use the Aga since most of us had never cooked on an Aga before.
The facilities were superb and we made use of all that was on offer: pool, tennis courts, croquet, swing, table tennis etc. We were blessed with glorious weather for most of the week. We also took advantage of the recommended 'in house' catering one evening which made for a relaxing evening for all the family.
All in all this was a fantastic holiday destination. A true family holiday.

  • Our stay at C18th Rectory

We were a family of 12 celebrating a birthday and the Old Quenns Manor at Alderton was perfect for us. There were 3 generations plus dogs and the accommodation worked perfectly. Lots of kitchen and dining space and ample entertainment areas from the quiet library to the smart drawing room and noisy TV room all with roaring fires and lots of logs courtesy of the owner who was a delightful host. What a history.
The grounds and surrounding areas are attractive.

    We will go back.

  • Ultimate relaxation and comfort!

We stayed at the Old Queen's Manor House with our extended family, ages ranging from 9 to 76. It was a wonderful and beautifully provisioned base, and, to be honest we had very little reason to leave the premises, with the tennis court, swimming pool, croquet etc all in the garden and on tap. Lots of relaxing meals in the lovely gardens and the kids spent most of the time outside having a great time.
Would definitely recommend it for a relaxing family break!

  • A truly special family retreat!

    Created on 29/08/2013

Having never stayed here before nor knew anyone who had, we took a risk by committing to a 9-night stay after reading the property description online. We wanted a countryside family retreat where we could truly relax and slow down to enjoy some exclusive time with each other. Choosing to stay at The Old Rectory proved to be the best decision we made! The house is full of old charm and character, set in beautiful expansive grounds, complete with a tennis court and heated pool. Our 3 kids (aged 15, 13 & 10) and their cousins (18, 16 & 11) had plenty to do and although nearby attractions beckoned, they often preferred to stay in to play tennis/ croquet / swim and simply enjoy the property together. Jane was absolutely wonderful and ensured we had everything we needed throughout our stay. Having traveled so far (from Singapore) and unfamiliar with the area, we were very grateful for such a caring and gracious host!
We hope to return some time soon!

  • Fantastic Property

By far the best of several properties we have stayed in. All of the rooms are of an excellent standard - and the garden, tennis court and pool are wonderful.
The owners are very welcoming and thoughtful in the way they provide for their guests. Property is well located for exploring into Wales and Forest of Dean as well as Bristol and Cotswolds. Hope we will get back one day!
