Best for a lively beach day: Playa de Burriana
Playa de Burriana is Nerja’s best-known beach and one of the most popular beaches on the eastern Costa del Sol. Its broad stretch of golden sand comes with everything needed for an easy day beside the Mediterranean, including sunbeds, parasols, watersports, and a promenade lined with restaurants and beach bars.
The beach extends for around 800 metres, leaving plenty of room for swimming and sunbathing. Kayaks and paddleboards are also available, with coastal routes leading towards the cliffs and caves around Maro.
Once you have had your fill of pedalos, parasols, and paella, Nerja’s town centre and the Balcón de Europa are only a 15-minute walk away.
Best for watersports: Playa Malapesquera
Playa Malapesquera, also known as Torrebermeja, is one of the best beaches in Benalmádena for active families and watersports enthusiasts. Visitors can hire paddleboards, kayaks, and pedalos, while beach volleyball and other sports facilities provide entertainment away from the water.
Dark sand and generally moderate waves characterise the beach, which lies close to Puerto Marina and the restaurants and attractions of Benalmádena Costa. Grassy areas and palm trees behind the shore offer somewhere to retreat when the midday sun becomes a little too much.

Best for peace near Nerja: Playa El Salon
Just below Nerja Old Town and the Balcón de Europa, Playa El Salón feels surprisingly peaceful for such a central beach. Traditional whitewashed buildings rise behind the shore, while fishing boats pulled onto the sand give it a distinctly local character.
A sloping path and steps lead down to the beach, making it less convenient than Burriana for visitors carrying pushchairs or plenty of beach equipment. Facilities are relatively limited, but Nerja’s cafés, restaurants, and shops are only a short walk away.
Visit in the morning to find a quiet place beside the water before returning to town for lunch.
Best for beach and town: Playa de la Calahonda
Playa de Calahonda sits immediately below Nerja’s Balcón de Europa, making it one of the most conveniently placed beaches in town. Cliffs and whitewashed buildings frame the compact cove, where clear Mediterranean water laps against a mixture of dark sand and shingle.
Its central position makes Calahonda easy to combine with sightseeing, shopping, or lunch in Nerja Old Town. The beach is small, however, so it can fill quickly during July and August. Arrive early if you hope to secure a place close to the water.
A coastal walkway also connects this part of Nerja with several neighbouring coves.
Best for a village atmosphere: Playa de la Cala Mijas
Playa de La Cala lies beside the former fishing village of La Cala de Mijas. Its long promenade, cafés, and restaurants make it a good choice for visitors who want the convenience of a resort beach without losing the character of a traditional coastal town.
The beach has dark sand and calm areas suitable for swimming, along with sunbeds, watersports, and family-friendly facilities during the summer. The promenade continues along the coast, making it equally appealing for an early morning walk or an evening beside the sea.
Nearby, the Torre de la Batería recalls the coast’s historic system of watchtowers.
Best for Marbella: Playa de Casablanca
Playa de Casablanca occupies a well-maintained stretch of Marbella’s Golden Mile, within walking distance of the town centre. The shore has dark sand and shallow areas suitable for swimming, while the promenade behind it makes the beach easy to explore on foot or by bicycle.
Restaurants, beach clubs, and chiringuitos line this part of the coast, and visitors can usually hire sunbeds and watersports equipment during the summer. Its location makes Casablanca particularly convenient for families or groups who want to divide their time between the beach and Marbella.
The promenade continues towards both central Marbella and Puerto Banús.
Best for seafood and chiringuitos: Playa La Carihuela
La Carihuela is the longest beach in Torremolinos, stretching for more than two kilometres beside the town’s former fishing quarter. Its dark sand and generally calm water make it popular with families, while the long promenade comes with showers, sunbeds, children’s facilities, and easy access to shops and restaurants.
The neighbourhood is particularly known for its seafood restaurants and chiringuitos. Order grilled sardine skewers, fried fish, or a plate of paella, then return to the sand for the afternoon.
It is a lively beach rather than a secluded escape, but few places on the Costa del Sol make lunch quite so easy.
Best for young families: Playa del Cristo
Just west of Estepona Marina, Playa del Cristo curves around a sheltered bay with calm, shallow water. Its protected position, play areas, and natural shade make it one of the best family beaches on the Costa del Sol, particularly for those travelling with younger children.
Dark sand covers the beach, while trees behind the shore provide welcome shelter from the summer heat. Two chiringuitos serve food and drinks, and the beach is easily accessible on foot or by car from Estepona.
Because the bay faces west, it receives afternoon and evening sunshine. Arrive early during peak season, when both the beach and nearby parking can become busy.
Best for escaping the crowds: Playa Las Viborilla
Playa de la Viborilla occupies a series of small coves along the Benalmádena coastline. Palm trees, rocks, and thick vegetation surround the shore, creating a more secluded atmosphere than the town’s larger beaches.
The calm water is well suited to swimming and snorkelling, although the sand is relatively coarse and facilities are more limited than at Malapesquera. A restaurant sits near the beach, but it is still worth bringing water and anything else you may need for the day.
Best for snorkelling: Playa El Cañuela
Playa del Cañuelo lies east of Nerja, close to the border between Málaga and Granada. The beach forms part of the protected Maro–Cerro Gordo natural area, where steep cliffs descend towards clear water and rocky seabeds.
Its location makes El Cañuelo one of the best beaches on the Costa del Sol for snorkelling and diving. Beneath the surface, rocks and marine life offer far more to explore than many of the region’s urban beaches.
Access is deliberately restricted to help protect the surrounding landscape. During the summer, visitors generally leave their cars near the main road and use the shuttle bus down to the beach. Outside the main season, access arrangements can vary, so check locally before setting out.
The shore consists of coarse sand and pebbles, so bring water shoes along with your snorkelling equipment.
Which Part of the Costa del Sol Has the Best Beaches?
The eastern Costa del Sol, particularly around Nerja and Maro, is best for clear water, rocky coves, snorkelling, and dramatic coastal scenery. Burriana offers plenty of facilities, while El Cañuelo provides a quieter experience beneath protected cliffs.
Benalmádena and Torremolinos suit families and travellers looking for watersports, promenades, and a wide choice of restaurants. Beaches such as Malapesquera and La Carihuela make it easy to spend the entire day beside the sea.

Are the Beaches on the Costa del Sol Sandy?
Most beaches on the Costa del Sol have a mixture of dark or golden sand, shingle, and small pebbles. Burriana has relatively fine sand, while El Cañuelo and several of Nerja’s smaller coves have coarser shores.
