Some of Our Top European Destinations

Why visit Europe?

Europe packs an extraordinary amount into a relatively small corner of the world. One day might mean swimming in the Mediterranean and eating seafood beside the harbour; another could take you through vineyard-covered hills, ancient cities or along a wild Atlantic coastline. Add excellent food, fascinating history and an almost endless choice of landscapes, and it’s easy to see why European villa holidays keep calling us back.

From the calm waters of the Mediterranean to Atlantic surf and the tranquil Aegean, Europe has some of the world’s best beaches. The Greek Islands and Croatia promise clear, inviting water and hidden coves, Spain and Portugal bring long sweeps of golden sand, and Italy serves up glamorous seaside towns alongside quieter island shores. The Atlantic coasts of Cornwall, France and Portugal are particularly tempting for surfers and anyone who likes their beaches a little wilder.

Europe’s food is a reason to travel in its own right. There is fresh pasta and local wine in Italy, just-caught seafood in Portugal, colourful market produce in Provence and Greek lunches overlooking the sea. Staying in a villa also means you can shop at local markets, cook together at home or have a private chef take care of dinner.

And then there is the history. Roman ruins, medieval towns, Moorish palaces, Renaissance cities and grand châteaux sit alongside some of the world’s most important museums and galleries. From Greece and Turkey to Croatia, France, Spain and Italy, a villa holiday in Europe can be as much about discovery as switching off.

What Oliver Loves

The variety is hard to beat. A single European villa holiday can bring beach days, market mornings, standout food and centuries of culture, often without travelling very far at all.

Top Tip

If you’re planning a multi-stop holiday, check rail routes before booking extra flights. High-speed trains can be a more relaxed way to travel between many European destinations, with the bonus of seeing more along the way.

Europe: At a Glance

  • France: Made for slow days and good food, France is particularly strong for countryside villas, wine country escapes and sophisticated stays by the sea.

  • Britain & Ireland: A great choice for big gatherings, with country houses and characterful homes surrounded by some seriously impressive coast and countryside.

  • Italy: Best for travellers who want food, culture and scenery to carry equal weight, with villa stays that can be as much about local markets and long lunches as time by the pool.

  • Spain: One of Europe’s best all-rounders, especially for families seeking reliable sunshine, beaches and villas within easy reach of restaurants and resort life.

  • Greece: Island-hopping territory at its best, where days revolve around clear-water swims, waterfront tavernas and villas overlooking the sea.

  • Portugal: Particularly good for active escapes, with Atlantic surf, excellent golf and a coastline that rewards exploring beyond the nearest beach.

  • Croatia: The Adriatic is the star here. Choose Croatia for swimming, sailing and days spent hopping between islands and beautifully preserved coastal towns.

  • Turkey: A strong choice for contemporary luxury villas, particularly if sea views, private pools and lazy days aboard a traditional gulet appeal to you.

  • Cyprus: Easy-going and family-friendly, Cyprus works particularly well when you want plenty of sunshine with beaches, restaurants and historic sights nearby.

  • Malta & Gozo: Small enough to explore without rushing, these islands pair excellent swimming and diving with an unusually rich concentration of history and architecture.
