With wonderful beaches like Fontanilla and Bajadilla, it’s no surprise that Marbella is a popular visitor destination. This southern city is also conveniently located, meaning you can easily sample the best of the Andalucía region using Marbella as your base. Whether you seek relaxing walks through nature, the best nightlife scene on the coast or an adventure-packed family break, it’s here.

The charming streets of the Old Town are a great place to start, and can hold their own against their equivalents in more classic Spanish cities. The Plaza de los Naranjos, or Orange Square, is the focal point, and is filled with orange trees, tapas bars and restaurant terraces. The surrounding area is a maze of cobbled lanes filled with little shops selling handmade clothing and jewellery.

If you want the chain store experience too you can find it at La Canada. This mammoth shopping mall is packed with big names and throws in a cinema and dozens of familiar eateries – it’s around 3km north of the Old Town.

That said, your dining options extend quite a bit further than food court fare. Marbella has several Michelin Star restaurants, but there’s plenty of creativity to be found on menus all over town. Fresh seafood is an excellent choice, and traditional Spanish offerings such as bull’s tail are served to the adventurous. More familiar world cuisine including Asian, Mediterranean and Indian is not hard to find, and Spain’s deliciously chocolatey churros are hard not to find – the ubiquitous treats will certainly keep you going.

The walled city boasts a number of historic sights – the 16th-century Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation on the Plaza de la Iglesia is a highlight. Many of the buildings on the Plaza de los Naranjos are of a similar vintage, including the Town Hall. The Magistrate’s House and Marbella Castle are also architecturally appealing.

City parks, such as Represa and Alameda are pretty places to stop, elevated by their water features and botanic gardens. Close to Alameda Park is the Avenida del Mar, where a procession of Salvador Dali sculptures can be found. Art lovers may also want to check out the Museo del Grabado Espanol Contemporáneo, an important local museum featuring Spanish engravings and more besides, housed in a former hospital.

Also culturally significant are the many festivals and events on Marbella’s calendar. The Marbella Film Festival and International Arts Festival are worth being in town for, while summer’s Starlite brings heavyweight musical talent to the city.

Finding a venue for an amazing night out is easy, with numerous bars around the Old Town, some with live music or karaoke. Marbella’s glamorous nightclubs are as chichi as they come, and attract the big-name DJs too – it’s worth rediscovering your ability to pull an all-nighter when the settings are so magnificent.

Outside the city, there’s much more. Head north for the region’s natural playground, the Sierra de las Nieves National Park, where mountains, caves and castles create photogenic landscapes perfect for outdoor pursuits. Around an hour’s drive from Marbella, Ronda should be on your list – the dramatic views over the gorge in this unforgettable town are jaw-dropping.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Villa Cefeo delivers all that the youngest of the family could want – outdoors, a huge pool, table tennis, mini-golf and hot tub. Indoors, big-screen TV, amazing lounge spaces and supremely comfy bedrooms. Even better, the beach is just a few minutes away.

Marbella offers a huge range of activities too. You can all get adventurous at Aventura Amazonia, around 10km east of the city, where zip-wires and treetop courses provide lots of exhilarating physical challenges. In Estepona, there’s go-karting galore at Kartfun, with a track of almost 2km. Kids can get behind the wheel from age 6, and adults can join in too.

You will find water parks, theme parks and wildlife parks all over Andalucía – the region really knows how to do family days out. The Selwo safari park near Estepona offers encounters with all kinds of animals including elephants, giraffes and lions, and Jeep safaris. Alternatively, head for the Eco Nature Reserve in Ojen to see, and learn about creatures in their natural habitat. With some exotic species from Asia and Africa, Fuengirola’s Bioparc is also worth visiting, while the Sea Life aquarium in Benalmádena is naturally good for marine life.

In Torremolinos, you’ll find Aqualand, the biggest water park in the area. Estepona’s Mundo Mania also has these kinds of attractions along with trampolines, sports, soft play and pretty much any child-friendly activity you could think of. It caters for the adults too, with a café and bar. A 40-minute drive from Marbella, Benalmádena is home of the Tivoli World amusement park with fairground and theme park-style rides. Just outside, you will also find cable cars.

North of Málaga, the El Torcal Nature Reserve is a must for intrepid explorer types. The ancient rock formations, which you can take a guided or unguided tour through, are really quite something. Described variously as surreal, eerie and fascinating, the area also offers some spectacular views in the direction of North Africa.

Málaga’s contemporary art centre, Pompidou, and the Maritime Museum (or ‘Classroom of the Sea’), also provide some entertaining excursions with an educational element. The city boasts numerous museums too, including an Interactive Music Museum and Automobile Museum, while the Central Market, Alcazaba fortress and the Parque de la Alameda provide more options. A big ferris wheel offers a spectacular view over the city, while the out-of-town mall, Plaza Mayor, has a huge multiplex cinema, arcade and outdoor play area.

For retail therapy closer to Marbella, check out the marina at Puerto Banús or the La Canada shopping mall. All the big name stores are there, and it’s particularly good for fashion. For a really authentic Spanish shopping experience, you could visit the central food market – the Mercado de Marbella has all the sights, smells and tastes to ensure it stays in their memories for a long time to come.
