Food and Drink in Tenerife

Tenerife’s cuisine is a delightful fusion of Spanish and Canarian flavours. Local dishes often feature fresh ingredients, highlighting the island’s rich agriculture and seafood offerings. “Papas arrugadas” (wrinkled potatoes) served with flavorful “mojo” sauces, both red and green, are a staple. Seafood lovers can savour dishes like “pescado a la sal” (fish baked in salt) or “vieja sancochada” (boiled parrotfish).

Don’t miss the opportunity to try “gofio,” a traditional Canarian flour made from roasted grains, which can be incorporated into various dishes. Pair your meal with local wines, particularly from the Tacoronte-Acentejo region, known for their exceptional quality and taste. Exploring “guachinches,” rustic family-run eateries that serve home-cooked dishes and local wine and provide an authentic and budget-friendly culinary experience.

When it comes to desserts and sweets, Tenerife offers tempting options. Indulge in “bienmesabe,” a creamy almond dessert, or “frangollo,” a cornmeal pudding infused with cinnamon and lemon. For a fruity treat, try “plátanos canarios,” the island’s sweet and flavorful bananas. There’s also “quesadilla” – not to be confused with the Mexican wrap – a sweet pastry filled with a mix of sweet cheese, honey, and almonds, making it the perfect ending to a Tenerife meal.

Tenerife Travel: Getting there and around

Tenerife is pretty easy to reach. There are regular direct flights from the UK to Tenerife Airport on easyJet, Ryanair, British Airways and Jet2 that take approximately 4 and half hours.

By Car

Renting a car is a popular and convenient way to explore Tenerife. The island has a well-maintained network of roads and highways, making it relatively easy to navigate. Most major car rental companies have offices at the Tenerife South Airport and Tenerife North Airport, and there are rental agencies in the larger towns and cities as well. Having a car allows you to explore remote and off-the-beaten-path locations at your own pace.

By Public Transport

Tenerife offers a comprehensive public transport system, primarily consisting of buses. TITSA is the primary bus company operating on the island, and its routes cover most areas. Buses are a cost-effective way to get around, and the main bus terminal in Santa Cruz de Tenerife provides access to various destinations. The tram, known as “Tranvía,” connects some parts of the island, including the capital and La Laguna. While public transport is generally reliable, it may not be as frequent in more remote areas or on weekends and holidays.

By Bike

Tenerife is becoming increasingly bike-friendly, with bike lanes and rental shops available in major tourist areas. Many hotels and resorts also offer bike rental services. The island’s diverse landscapes cater to various cycling experiences, from leisurely coastal rides to challenging mountain ascents. Mountain biking is particularly popular, with trails around Mount Teide and Anaga Rural Park offering thrilling experiences for more adventurous riders.
