Why visit Lanzarote?

Black lava fields stretch across Lanzarote’s interior, interrupted by whitewashed villages and the occasional splash of green. The island’s volcanic origins have created a remarkable landscape, particularly around Timanfaya National Park, where geothermal demonstrations reveal the intense heat still present beneath the surface. Along the coast, Playa Blanca offers sheltered sandy beaches, while the dramatic cliffs and surf at Famara attract those looking for a wilder side of the Atlantic.

Lanzarote also has a distinctive artistic identity, thanks largely to local artist César Manrique. His work transformed volcanic spaces into remarkable attractions, including Jameos del Agua, where a natural lava tunnel houses an underground lake and auditorium. At Jardín de Cactus, thousands of cacti grow among terraces of dark volcanic stone, creating one of the island’s most unusual gardens.

The food is equally connected to the landscape. Vineyards in La Geria grow in hollows dug into black volcanic ash, producing wines worth sampling at a local bodega. In coastal villages such as El Golfo, restaurants serve freshly caught fish overlooking the Atlantic, often accompanied by traditional Canarian potatoes and mojo sauce.
