Close to the heart of Funchal city centre in Madeira, but enjoying a tranquil situation within the Quinta Vista Alegre estate, is tastefully-renovated Fennel Cottage. This characterful villa is tucked away amongst banana trees and vines, giving it the feel of a romantic getaway deep within an oasis of calm.

Fennel Cottage’s restoration has been careful to maintain a traditional feel, which means the original stone walls are still there to remind you of the cottage’s history and heritage. The villa feels both restful and elegant, making it a comfortable place to totally switch off and soak up the idyllic surroundings.

A stone staircase takes you to the front door of Fennel Cottage’s first-floor accommodation, which in turn opens into the spacious living area. Here you’ll find a sofa and two armchairs, with a beautiful coffee table crafted with wood sourced from the estate. There’s also a television for spending cosy evenings in watching films. The kitchen/dining room is well-equipped with every amenity you could need during your stay, such as an oven, microwave, dishwasher, fridge and toaster. There’s a small table for starting the mornings with a delicious breakfast as the sweet breeze flows in through the window close by. Sliding glass doors open straight onto a decked balcony with outdoor seating, giving you a lovely place to start or finish the day. The peaceful bedroom features a king-size bed and a mahogany chest of drawers, with the bathroom having a bath with overhead shower.

You have access to a separate, shared laundry room with washing machine, dryer ironing board and iron. The outside space is also shared and features several areas in which to unwind. On the front patio is a seating area that’s shaded by vines, making it the perfect place to enjoy a refreshing drink or casual meals. The swimming pool is set within a large terrace that’s dotted with sun loungers for the ultimate in relaxation.

Fennel Cottage is cute holiday home, which is part of selection of refurbished historical Quinta Barns. This holiday home, along with Bom Dia Villa and Funcho Cottage, are nestled within a historic banana plantation and within walking distance of plenty of amenities within Funchal.

Occupying a position within one of the most popular and privileged areas of Funchal, amenities are just a stone’s throw from Fennel Cottage. These include a restaurant and a bar that are both less than a five-minute walk away, with a 10-minute drive opening up an even wider choice.

Enjoy a leisurely lunch with stunning views across the sea down at the harbour, with seafood restaurants serving up fresh, delicious dishes. Also by the harbour are plenty of interesting places to visit. The CR7 Museum is dedicated to Cristiano Ronaldo, arguably Madeira’s most-famous football player. Here you can see trophies won by the player, golden boots and several shirts. History lovers will enjoy 17th-century São Tiago Fortress, which is now also home to a contemporary art museum that showcases Portuguese works.

The heart of Funchal is cosmopolitan and cultural. The best place to get a literal taste of Funchal’s rich wine-making heritage is Blandy’s Wine Lodge. Go on a tour to learn more about the history of Madeira wine, and then finish the experience with a tasting. The old town, or Zona Velha, as it’s called by locals, is simply not to be missed. The narrow, cobbled streets are lined with beautiful buildings, some of which date back to the 15th century. These include whitewashed Corpo Santo Chapel.

Funchal is dotted with attractive gardens, with Madeira Botanical Garden and Monte Palace Tropical Garden being two of the most popular to visit. Take the cable car up the mountain to reach Monte Palace Tropical Garden and enjoy scenic sea and city views along the way.

THE REGION

Funchal is the largest city on the island of Madeira and is encapsulated by Pico Ruivo and its neighbouring mountains, which look as if they have been seamlessly carved into the skyline by a Lusitanian God.

There is no better spot to start your holiday than in the Old Town, which illustrates its personality though street art, architecture and busy local businesses. There are many fine eateries, botanical gardens, a cathedral and impressive museums. Perhaps hop on the Madeira Cable Car as one of your first activities, as this will give you a great idea of the islands size.

Many flock Funchal in order to enjoy the Atlantic Coastline. This is home to its prominent harbour, where hundreds of boats and yachts, some of which enable visitors to embark on a magical sea voyage, can be found. Funchal really is a destination for lovers of the sea; as there are renowned surfing points, as well as being a great place to spot some whales.

Madeirans are also notorious for their elaborate festivals. If you’re travelling during the New Year, you will be treated to one of the world’s biggest Firework Festivals…a dazzling sight! During late February & early Mrach, you are able to witness Carnival and the streets of Funchal are lit with parades and festivities. If that’s not enough for you; the Atlantic Festival International Fireworks Competition, Wine Festival and Christmas are all noteworthy dates for anyone visiting Funchal.

There are some incredible villas on the island and we believe that we have done a great job finding them for you. Have a browse and let us know what you think.

ABOUT MADEIRA

The island of Madeira can be found south west of mainland Portugal, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Due to the island’s location, its is considered to have a Mediterranean climate that serves locals and visitors all year round – making it an ideal escape from reality at any point in the year.

What we love Madeira for is its seemingly ongoing festivals! Madeirans have found an excuse to celebrate most things; including film, their natural surroundings and key patron saints. This means that planning a visit during these days and even weeks of commemoration is well worth it (scroll down to see some key dates).

Madeira is divided into several municipals, each with a special offering to those who visit this island. Our favourite two communities are Funchal and Calheta and these are where you will find most of our beautiful villas.

Madeira’s landscape extends much more than a striking coastline. Make sure you pack some hiking boots and venture inland during your stay. With mountainous trails along Vereda do Arieiro, or more countryside appropriate paths like Levada do Risco and waterfall chasing treks like Levada do Caldeirao Verde – this archipelago has everything a keen outdoors person requires.

For those who enjoy either playing or watching sports, you’ll be happy to know Madeira offers so much selection. Madeira is also home to three notable football clubs, so if you’re visiting during the football season and want to see a good quality of football, you have every chance to. Porto Santo Golfe is the island’s renowned golf course. With an 18-hole course (Par 72) overlooking a Galapagos-like backdrop, golf enthusiasts will certainly want a ‘slice’ of the action! Surfers can access some great beaches like Jardim do Mar, Ponta Pequena, Paul do Mar, and Fajã da Ovelha in order to find some swell. Or, if you’re simply looking to recline on a sun lounger and soak up some rays, whilst listening to crystal clear waves break as they hit the shores, you will find plenty of man-made beaches & Lidos created for your leisure!

With a superb climate, close proximity to the coastline, wonderful cuisine, charming locals and astonishing scenery – this is a fabulous holiday choice for families & friends.

But while you're enjoying one of our fantastic villas in Madeira, you may well want to take some time out from all that sun worship to explore everything else the region has to offer – so we've put together this handy travel guide to give you a little help and inspiration!

Reviews

  • Madeiran Oasis

    on 30/04/2019

A fabulous holiday retreat if you want a peaceful holiday, yet be with in walking distance of the bustling city of Funchal. Thoroughly recommended.

  • Beautiful accommodation in lovely surroundings

    on 20/04/2019

We had a great stay here. The apartment was very comfortable and spotlessly clean. Buffy couldn't be more helpful. I would highly recommend the accommodation.

  • Wonderful

    on 15/09/2016

We're almost reluctant to review this property but that would be selfish of us. Having found it, we don't want to share it. We can honestly say that we have never stayed anywhere like it. It's like a different world - peace and quiet reign. The cottage was beautifully furnished and had everything you could need - a fully fitted kitchen, balcony, TV , dvd player, books, Wi-Fi. There is even a washing machine and a tumble dryer available. Every home comfort is provided. Outside is spectacular with vines and banana trees. The large pool is beautiful with loungers and umbrellas. We spent every morning at the pool and sometimes returned for a swim later in the day. Buffy and Frank made us very welcome, as did the dogs who came to see us most days. The property is well within walking distance of the centre of Funchal and all amenities including supermarkets and restaurants. We've fallen in love with Fennel Cottage and hope to have many more holidays there. We really can't praise this beautiful property highly enough.

  • Perfect in every way

    on 17/02/2015

This was our first visit to Madeira and we found Fennel Cottage to be perfect in every way. We felt so at home surrounded by the banana trees. Some days we were reluctant to open the gates and venture into the outside world. The owners, Buffy and Frank, are special people.

  • A great place to stay and relax

    on 29/09/2014

Our stay here was part of our 50th Wedding Anniversary celebrations. The accommodation here did not let us down. The comfortable apartment is fully equipped for self catering although there are many places to eat out close by. We had a car and although the entrance is a bit tight after a while presents no problem. Owners Frank and Buffy made us most welcome. We would definitely recommend this property.
