Villa Sara can be found in the quaint historic fishing village of Ferragudo. This picturesque place has done well to retain its charm, you can expect to see beautiful white houses rising from the sea and small fishing boats bobbing up and down in the estuary.
The villa is ideally suited for exploring the local area, just a ten-minute walk from the nearest beach there is no need to load up the car each day. Praia Grande is the largest beach in the area and has plenty of space for enjoying a day relaxing on the soft sand. The popular beach has a wide range of facilities available to make the day relaxing, with cafes, toilets and bars are servicing the visitors. As you might expect from a popular beach, there are plenty of activities to try out, a well-known surf spot, and it is the perfect place to catch a few waves.
The villa is also well located to enjoy restaurants and bars with a sea view. If you can be tempted to leave the villa, there are also a handful of restaurants and bars within a five-minute walk. Enjoy watching the sunset as you sip on a cocktail and get ready for an evening of fun, exploring the towns culinary scene. Wander the cobbled streets of Ferragudo and uncover quaint family restaurants and seafront bars, we recommend you try some of the local seafood dishes and of course Piri Piri chicken!
Whilst in the area, be sure to visit the Castelo de São João de Arade, a walk up the cobbled streets of the village will lead you to this impressive site. The castle dated back to the 16th century and was built to defend the area from pirates, it then became the summer residence of the poet Coelho Carvalho; however these days it remains unoccupied, but still well worth exploring even for the great views!
With stunning beaches all around the nearby coast and beautiful historic sites in abundance, this is a truly remarkable corner of the world and makes for a fantastic holiday destination from families and friends.

The Region
Portimão is the largest city in the western Algarve and was traditionally a centre for shipbuilding, sardine fishing and fish processing. Today, most of that industry has been replaced by tourism, leisure and retail, leaving Portimão as a large and residential city. Perhaps the most attractive part of the town is the riverfront which runs from the marina to beyond the road bridge. There are several squares along this stretch, which become increasingly less touristy as you head away from the marina.
Of course, Portimão is probably best known for the fantastic beach of Praia da Rocha. Located about 3 km south of the town, this is one of the most impressive stretches of sand on the Algarve coast. Take a trip up the Rio Arade and explore the local area, or get out and active in the sunshine. Our pick of the best properties to stay in Portimão are perfect bases whether you're simply here for a beach holiday or you plan to explore further afield.
ABOUT THE ALGARVE
Though most people tend to see the Algarve as all about the beaches and a holiday on the Med, there’s far much more to it than that. There’s actually a load of fascinating culture and history, superb cuisine and enthralling adventures to be had, though we’d be the first to admit that the beaches are pretty special too, with lots of sand, spectacle and wonderfully clean water.
But while you’re enjoying one of our fantastic villas in Algarve, you may well want to take some time out from all that sun worship to explore everything else the region has to offer – so we’ve put together this handy travel guide to give you a little help and inspiration!
