With its majestic hilltop position overlooking the Tiber valley, ancient Castiglione Ugolino offers a truly unforgettable escape. This 11th-century castle, adjoining church and beautiful new annexe have undergone a thorough and careful renovation to become a truly impressive place for rest and relaxation. Breathtaking views over rolling countryside, hills, vineyards and olive groves can be enjoyed both inside and out, with Castiglione Ugolino being surrounded by expansive gardens.

Just some of the castle interior's many historic features include gorgeous reclaimed terracotta floor tiles, vaulted ceilings, ancient frescoes and marble stairs. The church showcases a range of hand-painted decorations and is a wonderfully romantic place for weddings and special occasions or for simply stopping and taking in the beauty and history.

There are six luxurious bedrooms at Castiglione Ugolino, and a further four in a equally wonderful annexe, with each boasting an ensuite marble bathroom and an array of sumptuous, modern features. These incredibly restful spaces are matched in comfort by the several living spaces on offer. And there's always somewhere to suit the mood.

The star of the show when it comes to the extensive outside space is the large infinity pool with idyllic views. These views are even more spectacular at sunset, as you watch the skies turning all shades of pink and orange behind the hills. Al fresco meals at the dining table get you as equally close to the stunning surrounding scenery too. Stroll around the gardens and marvel at the privileged position Castiglione Ugolino occupies in this gorgeous area of Umbria.

The villa and annexe are part of a huge private estate in the hills, with woods, olive groves, valleys and rivers on the doorstep for exploring. If you're lucky, long walks will have you spotting a range of wildlife, as well as beautiful flora. The farm on the estate is home to some very friendly animals too!

What Oliver loves...

  • Both the castle and church date back to the 11th-century and retain many original features.
  • As well as being an historic escape, there are also plenty of modern luxuries to enjoy.
  • The views over the surrounding hills and countryside from the gardens are breathtaking.
  • A complimentary shuttle takes you to the estate's restaurant where welcome drinks await you on your first evening.
  • This property has access to the incredible estate facilities, from catering and food delivery to organised activities like truffle hunting and wine tasting.

What you should know

  • Air-conditioning is featured throughout the castle and in three of the annexe bedrooms only.
  • Larger parties travelling together may also wish to book any of the following properties located within the same estate: Villa Torre (sleeps 8), Villa Subtilia (sleeps 18), San Savino (sleeps 8), Villa Caminata (sleeps 12), Villa Santa Croce (sleeps 6), Villa Penna (sleeps 8), Villa Molinella (sleeps 2) and Monte Tezio (sleeps 14).
  • The castle features internal steps and open-tread staircases.
  • The Property is in a rural location, on the top of a hill (600 meter above sea level) within a country estate, which is a large Umbrian active agricultural farm. The access road to the property is a long and occasionally steep private white gravel road, not suitable for sports cars or any other low-height car. We would recommend the use of a 4 wheel drive car.
  • Short stays are possible, please enquire for prices.
