Chania Residence is located in the center of Chania on the 5th and 6th floor of an office building overlooking the majestic city of Chania & the Cretan Sea. There are two airports that serve Crete, the more local one is just fourteen kilometres away, and the larger and international Heraklion is a two hour drive from your destination.

The penthouse is situated in the heart of the town, with plenty of food stores for holiday provisions, lots of cafes, bars, and restaurants are nearby, and souvenir and brand label shops are in abundance. Whether you are looking for a relaxing time sunbathing on sandy beaches, yearn for some culture and to visit archaeological sites in the cradle of civilisation, or trek the trails through the local flora and fauna, before dancing the night away, there’s something for everyone with a holiday on the island of Crete.

There are a reputed forty one beautiful beaches on the Cretan coastline, and a few of them are within walking distance of the apartment. The nearest are Nea Chora, Koum Kapi, and the very popular Golden beaches, and slightly further afield are Agioi Apolostoloi, Germaniko Pouli, Souda, Kalamaki, and Agia Marina, all within a nine kilometre radius. These soft sandy beaches have easy shallow entry into the calm Aegean Sea, organised sunbeds with shady brollies, lined with family friendly cafes and tavernas where you can sample the local cuisine, and some with water sports, particularly wind and kitesurfing.

The medieval town of Chania is well worth a walk through. Stroll down to the old port and harbour, see them haul in the catch of the day, and make a visit to the Maritime museum. Seek shade and solace in the Greek Orthodox Church of Agios Nikolaos, that has also been a Catholic church and a mosque. Learn about the history of the area at the Archeological Museum, before bargaining in the local market, and dining off freshly caught sea food at the sea shore. For those who love walking, explore the three hundred caves the island hides, hike over hillsides, streams, and rocky ravines to discover watermills and ruins, and stop along the way at a local winery and taste the fruits of the many vineyards The area is soaked in history, particularly Minoan and Dorian, Crete was conquered by the Venetians in the fifteenth century, who built fortresses to keep the Ottoman pirates at bay, then finally gaining independence in the nineteenth century and becoming part of Greece. If you prefer sea to land, all aboard a boat trip where you can scuba or snorkel underwater ruins, and strap on your jet skis or paraglide with one of the many water sports clubs.

The ancient town and port of Heraklion is a two hour drive away, don’t miss a tour around the Palace of Knossos, a visit to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, a walk along the Venetian walls, and a stroll through the old quarter, where you can shop for souvenirs, before enjoying a souvlaki and ouzo like a local. Go further afield to Vai, Crete’s eastern most tip, where you will find lush forests and a unique date palm. Explore Psychro Cave, reputedly the birthplace of Zeus, and rock climb Mount Ida to find the Ideon Cave. Sitia Geopark is three hundred and fifty square kilometres of the island’s diverse eco-system, where you can trek through gorges, bathe on beaches, walk the wetlands, become a bird-watcher, and be at one with nature. Get active and hike the Richtis Gorge, stroll through streams to reach the twenty-metre waterfall, where you can cool off in the inviting pool.

Take a boat tour to visit the intriguing island of Spinalonga, a former leper colony until as recently as the 1950’s, home to a Venetian fortress, and now an open-air museum. No visit to Crete is complete without a trip into Agios Nikolaos, a harbour town that uniquely houses a lake in its centre, is home to the archaeological museum of Minoan treasures, and is full of tavernas, shops, bars, and restaurants in which to sit and watch the local life go by.

How to reach Chania

There are two ways to reach Chania: either by flight or by ferry.

By plane:
Chania Airport (CHQ) is only a 20 minutes ride away from central Chania. During the summer months, frequents overseas and domestic flights are performed. In most of the cases, there are available buses that connect Chania city and most of the villas. You can also hire a car from one of the many rental companies at the airport, or alternatively get a taxi to bring you right to your doorstep.

By ferry:
If you choose to do an island-hopping trip and use the ferry as a method of transportation, then the closest port is in Souda, only 8km from the centre of Chania. Only ferries from Piraeus in Athens or Heraklion in Crete. Heraklion port has a wider choice: you can also take a ferry from other Greek islands like Santorini, Mykonos or Paros, but you will have to take a longer bus ride to reach your villa. You can easily book your ferry tickets using the link below or the booking engine.

There’s lots for your young ones to do when you stay in Chania. Starting with the apartment’s private pool, where they can play and splash all day. Each bedroom has its own smart television, where on the cooler months and evenings they can catch up on their favourite programmes.

The nearest beaches of Nea Chora and Koum Kapi are a short walk from the apartment, they are organised with sandy shores and easy entry warm shallow waters. Anyone for tennis, then you’re in luck with some local courts in the vicinity. Or get on your horse and ride it at the local stables, there’s nothing better than a gallop across the sands at sunset. From the local town of Chania all aboard for a family day at sea, swim and snorkel in local bays, and enjoy a traditional meze lunch on the boat. If you’re feeling flush, charter a yacht with a captain and cook, and sail until the sun sets. Further afield the north coast of Crete has a plethora of family-friendly beaches, offering a selection of water sports, from kid’s banana boat rides to speedy jet skis. There’s plenty of day trips too, organised and leaving from Chania town or hire a car and go exploring.  Spend the day bathing on the stunning pink sands of Elafonisi, an area of protected wildlife and beauty. Bathe in the Balos Lagoon, and swim or sail out to sea to the island of Gramvousa, where you will find an old Venetian Castle, and a cave that is believed to be an ancient shipyard.

Get those legs walking with a fifteen kilometre hike to Samaria Gorge, Europe’s longest gorge, and where you can spot the local flora and fauna, and the famous Kri-Kri goats. There’s a shortened version of the walk starting at the village of Agia Roumeli, that is only three kilometres long, just right for little legs. A visit to the old town of Chania is well worth it, wander the ancient streets, where your kids can take part in the Scavenger Hunt challenge, discover local landmarks by following clues and maps on their smart phones. The nearby Limnoupolis Water Park is the perfect place to take the kids for the day, with a lazy river, extreme slides, swimming pools galore, a children’s playground in the pool and poolside, as well as cafes and bars. There are loads of opportunities for your children to learn some new skills, why not try stand-up paddle boarding, snorkelling, and scuba diving, great activities for older kids. All the family can enjoy a day learning how to make traditional Greek jars at pottery classes.

For those who prefer dry land take a Jeep Safari across country on rough roads and discover traditional Greek villages and a taste of the authentic Crete. And for the dare-devils take them tandem para-gliding with professional instructors and fly like an eagle over the coastline and mountains of the island. If they’re not too tired after all these activities, there’s the Minoan’s World 3D Museum and 9D Movie Cinema for some evening wind-down time.
