This Earth Day, join our mission to plant 3 trees for every booking made between April 22nd - 28th, 2024. Let's make a sustainable impact together! Learn more about our journey here >>

Fall under the spell of this picture-perfect pink château in southern France which has been in the same loving family for eighteen generations. Set in six hectares of vast parkland featuring ancient trees, and a short stroll from a gastronomic restaurant, this is a wonderful base for visiting the Montagne Noire, the Canal du Midi and the great historic city of Carcassonne.

Take a step back in time at Château Dans Le Temps and immerse yourself in the French way of life as you stay in the third-floor guest quarters of this enchanting 15th-century castle. Its hospitable owners, who live in their own château quarters, will be able to tell you many stories from their family history and even show you the special ceremonial rooms downstairs together with the castle’s rare 19th-century panoramic wallpapers, the perfect backdrop to a special event or wedding.

Follow the curved staircase up to the very top of the château where up to 14 guests can stay across five pretty bedrooms, each one with characterful furnishings and its own private bathroom. Alongside a little blue kitchen, spend quality time with family or friends in the charming living-dining room, soaking up the historic ambience and admiring the superb garden views around you.

The parkland is simply glorious as well as extensive, not just its swimming pool and terraces, but also its century-old trees including a 500-year-old oak, officially classified as a ‘remarkable tree’. Find the little children’s play area, sit on a bench by the river or take a stroll through the six hectares of parkland. The grounds also border an upmarket hotel with a spa, indoor heated swimming pool and gastronomic restaurant – book ahead with the hotel for spa treatments and special meals.

As well as romantic weddings and celebrations, the château owners can also arrange 19th-century themed costumed events across its parkland and ceremonial rooms as well as cookery lessons and wine courses so you can truly experience the French ‘art de vivre’. Hire a cook to create delicious family feasts and arrange tours of this beautiful region.

In nearby Revel, 7km by car, don’t miss the bustling Saturday morning in the town’s historic square and market hall, perhaps followed by a summer swim at Bassin de Saint-Ferréol, a gorgeous place for woodland walks, seasonal watersports and even tree-top adventures.

Cycle or sail along the Canal du Midi, stopping off to try cassoulet in Castelnaudary, and drive into the heart of the Montagne Noire with its streams, forests, castles and characterful villages. Admire the gorgeous riverside houses in Castres, experience the lovely market in Mirepoix and visit Cathar castles scattered across the landscapes. If you can, find time to spend the day in Albi or Carcassonne, two of France’s UNESCO World Heritage sites in this remarkable part of southern France.

This home is a part of our Great Value and Heritage Collection!

This is a historic home, and as such:

  • It has probably been standing for over 100 years, which means it's full of historic value and charm but it may also have one or two quirks!
  • Some of the decor and furnishings may not be brand new, but that should not detract from your holiday experience in this unique setting that allows you to take a step back in time!

In the Tarn department of southern France, around an hour by car from Toulouse and Carcassonne’s airports, in the foothills of the Montagne Noire, Château Dans Le Temps is set within six hectares of glorious parkland.

Wander down the driveway and within a couple of minutes you will reach a gastronomic restaurant and spa, part of an upmarket hotel in the same little hamlet bordering the back of the château (their grounds are separated by a moat). The spa, usually open Monday to Saturday, offers treatments, massages and a heated indoor swimming pool (you can purchase special passes for multiple use) whilst the restaurant specialises in modern regional cuisine – reservations for both services are required directly with the hotel.

Crossing the border into Haute-Garonne, it's just over a 10-minute drive to the 14th century bastide town of Revel (7km). The town is home to a characterful medieval market hall and central square with arcaded houses and cafes, home to one of the best markets in southern France on a Saturday morning. There are also many charming restaurants, shops and other useful amenities including supermarkets.

One of the great highlights of this area is the wonderful Bassin de Saint-Ferréol (10km) with summer holiday activities such as swimming, canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding and pedaloes. It’s a beautiful spot for walking, horse-riding, biking and lakeside picnics. In July and August there’s also a tree-top activity centre and mini-golf by the lake. If visiting the fascinating Canal du Midi Museum, stop off in the picturesque Jardin de Saint-Ferréol.

Heading into La Montagne Noire, discover incredible areas of woodland, streams, vineyards, caves and historic castles. Bassin de Lampy is another gorgeous lake for walking and summer swimming whilst there are pretty villages to visit in the mountains and beyond such as Sorèze, Durfort, Lacombe, Saissac and Montolieu, the latter known for its bookshops.

The Canal du Midi passes through Castelnaudary (25km), a lovely town in the Aude department with a pretty bassin, attractive walks and cycle rides, boat trips as well as traditional restaurants serving cassoulet, a regional speciality.

Spend time admiring the colourful riverside houses of Castres (30km), soak up the ambience of the delightful market in Mirepoix (58km) and appreciate the charm of Limoux (66km). This region is also known for vide-greniers markets taking place in local villages over the weekend as well as summer festivities and ample opportunities for wine-tasting.

Other day trips include famous Carcassonne (55km) and Albi (64km), both UNESCO World Heritage sites, and the pink-hued city of Toulouse (58km), known as ‘La Ville Rose’.

Owner Profile

- When did you become the homeowner?

When I was born! I am the 17th generation of the family to look after this chateau.

- What made you fall in love with the property?

It is a story of love and transmission, I know the history of each object, each tree... and I am already passing on this knowledge to my children

- Are there any interesting stories in its history?

As a Protestant high place, our private archives retrace the history of the castle and the family since the 15th century, which is mixed with the French wars of religion, the American revolution, the second world war... This house is a history book!

- Have you ever had any famous guests?

Yes, many famous actors and singers in France like Audrey Tautou, Marc Lavoine, Francois Cluzet, Emmanuelle Beart, Jean-Louis Aubert...

- For anyone who comes to stay, is there anything you suggest they should really...

Must do? Visit Carcassonne and Albi (UNESCO World Heritage)

Must eat? Eat a Cassoulet and our speciality duck dishes.

I am in love with the region and its history, I often welcome visitors and while showing them around the chateau and presenting its history, I suggest a variety of activities to the traveller depending on their interests and age: Cathar castles, golf, Limoux and Gaillac wine cellars, Toulouse-Lautrec museum, boat trips along the Canal du Midi...
