Château De Vigner is in a great location for exploring the Loire valley, set around half an hour south-west of Saumur and close to many excellent local wineries and vineyards.
Walk out of the estate’s grounds and there are lots of opportunities for walking, fishing and cycling – turn left and be greeted by fields of summer sunflowers at certain times of year! The local village, under 2km away, is a small wine-producing village and there is a little auberge where you can also pick up fresh morning bread.
Doué-la-Fontaine is around 6km away and this is where you will find a large supermarket as well as a greater choice of restaurants and amenities. Pop into the wine-specialist shop in the centre if you are looking for great recommendations on what to drink during your stay. Of course, wine-tastings and vineyard visits can also be arranged for your time in this region.
Other activities in the area include kayaking along nearby rivers, visiting some of the magnificent Loire châteaux and heading to atmospheric Farmer’s markets in places such as Doué-la-Fontaine, Montreuil-Bellay, Cholet, Saumur and Angers amongst many other local villages and towns.
Saumur is an especially lovely market town to visit, well known for its Cadre Noir equestrian school as well as its picturesque setting on the banks of the Loire river. Sample some of its sparkling white wine in a little bar, dine out in an excellent restaurant and take some time to visit the town’s fairy-tale like château.
The amazing Fontevraud-l'Abbaye is just over half an hour away by car, a UNESCO World Heritage site, whilst even closer are the fascinating troglodyte caves at Rochemenier, only 12km by car.
The pretty riverside town of Chinon and the historic city of Angers are both within an hour or drive 100km east to Tours, an incredible city on the banks of the Loire river with museums, beautiful buildings and close to some of the most famous châteaux such as Villandry and Amboise.
If you are travelling to Château De Vigner via Paris, it’s around a 3hr drive or the TGV takes 90 minutes from Paris Montparnasse or Charles de Gaule airport train station. If arriving into Angers then the château is around a 45-minute drive away and there are car hire options from the train station.
