As you approach Château Les Tourelles along the incredible driveway you will be in awe of the beauty around you as the hill rises, surrounded by acres of woodland and glorious views of the Dordogne valley and river. Yet it’s not just the setting of this 17th château that will inspire you – step inside and discover a luxuriously appointed fairy-tale castle that will exceed your expectations in so many ways.

The new owners of Château Les Tourelles have recently transformed this hilltop castle into a place of remarkable period charm, retaining so many historic features whilst modernising each of the nine sumptuous en suite bedrooms. Gather with family and friends in the grand salon with its extraordinary furnishings and ancient paintings, prepare feasts fit for royalty in the fully modernised vaulted kitchen, then dine by candle-light beneath the medieval chandelier in the original period dining room. Upstairs, seek solitude in the incredible library with its historic bookshelves and leather furnishings – it even features a desk where it’s said that in the early 19th century the US Ambassador to France wrote letters to the then President of the USA.

There are nine air-conditioned bedrooms, each one splendidly themed and beautiful modern bathrooms have been added. Look out for one of the bedrooms inspired by Versailles with opulent furnishings, triple plush carpets and marble tiling, another with original tapestry wallpaper and 18th century artwork or admire the bedroom designed in the colours of Provence with a romantic stand-alone bath with 360 degrees valley views. The Royal Suite is possibly the most magnificent with its stain glass windows, original stencilled walls and a grand copper bathtub.

Outside, dine al-fresco in the inviting courtyard, relax by the stunning swimming pool and poolhouse, then wander around the glorious gardens taking in the mesmerising views of the Dordogne valley. The 32-hectare estate also includes vast woodland, old stone walls and the ruins of an ancient church up on the hill. Follow the private hiking paths through the forest, discovering flora, fauna and maybe even wild boars. Walk down to the banks of the Dordogne river for a picnic in idyllic surroundings.

To add to the sense of luxury, VIP services can be arranged from a champagne reception to daily breakfasts and a chef service. You can even be picked up by a helicopter and taken straight to your castle or luxury car transfers can be booked. Picnic hampers, cooking classes, wine-tasting at the château and even truffle hunting in the late autumn; the welcoming caretakers onsite will help you achieve the holiday of your dreams.

You are perfectly positioned to explore the Perigord Noir and all its allure. Gastronomic restaurants are within a short drive and some of the region’s most idyllic villages and towns are close by such as Domme, La Roque-Gageac and Sarlat. Visit endless châteaux, delightful markets, pre-historic caves and beautiful gardens - there is so much to see and do in this enchanting region.

In an astounding location in the Dordogne, this really is the ultimate luxury French château experience.

Reached by a breathtaking driveway, Château Les Tourelles is set in 30 hectares of glorious grounds featuring forests, hills and amazing views of the Dordogne river and valley. Explore the estate, discover local flora, wander through the ancient woods and you may even come across wild boars. There’s old stone walls, wells and even the ruins of a 12th century church.  You can walk down to the Dordogne river and enjoy a picnic on the banks of the river, looking over towards another impressive castle on the other side.

The nearest village is around a 15-minute walk through the forests or just five minutes in the car – here you will find a boulangerie as well as a small grocery store with some fresh produce as well as other basics. Furthermore, at the end of the château’s winding drive is a charming little bar and restaurant which has live music on a Friday evening. Also within walking distance is somewhere to hire bikes and kayaks.

For a good choice of restaurants, artisan shops, lovely cafes as well as a supermarket, head to Souillac (13km), about a 15 to 20-minute drive away. Don’t miss the Friday morning market and take time to visit the lovely Abbey Sainte-Marie. Golf-lovers will appreciate the Résidence Souillac Golf & Country Club, around a 25-minute drive away.

Gourmands can experience some of the region's very best cuisine at one of the many restaurants within a short drive, ranging from rustic establishments serving regional fare to high-end cuisine at one of the nine Michelin-rated establishments nearby.

Follow the Dordogne river west and you will soon reach famous villages such as Domme (20km), La Roque-Gageac (21km) and Castelnaud-la-Chapelle (27km). Visit idyllic castles such as Château de Beynac and discover beautiful gardens such as those in Eyrignac or the Jardins de Marqueyssac in Vézac. Hire canoes for a day exploring the Dordogne or have picnics by the riverside; this is the Perigord Noir at its very best.

The famous town of Sarlat-la-Canéda (17km) is also within easy reach. It’s well known for its foie-gras and truffles and has a wonderful weekly market on a Saturday as well as gastronomic shops and gourmet restaurants. The historic architecture is incredible and you can spend hours exploring the narrow lanes of the old town.

Saint-Amand-de-Coly (30km) to the north, classified as one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, is an ideal place to visit alongside the pre-historic Lascaux caves near Montignac (35km). You are also near the border with the Lot department which is filled with yet more beautiful villages such as Gourdon (18km) with its charming honey-coloured houses and Rocamadour (38km), an amazing place to visit. Wine-lovers could even travel as far as Cahors (60km) and its vineyards which produce some of the finest wines in the world.

Region

One of France’s most visited destinations, Sarlat-la-Canéda is a beautiful medieval town with a superb reputation for its gastronomy. Staying near Sarlat allows you to experience the town’s rich heritage alongside its fine cuisine, whilst also being close to idyllic villages and natural scenery of the Périgord Noir, never far from the meandering Dordogne River.

Exquisitely restored, explore the old town with its warren of winding lanes with inviting shops, restaurants and characterful cafes. Take a guided tour to truly appreciate Sarlat’s rich history dating back to medieval and Renaissance times – the small yet attractive Cathédrale Saint-Sacerdos de Sarlat, once a Benedictine abbey, is one of the main highlights of the town.

Spend time learning all about the region’s gastronomy, best experienced at the traditional outdoor market on a Saturday or Wednesday morning. Local specialities are of course served in Sarlat’s many excellent restaurants or bought in little shops across the town – look out for foie-gras, truffles, honey, chestnuts and walnuts. There is also an organic market on Thursday afternoons and a charming covered market near the cathedral.

If staying in the height of the summer, join in one of the region’s marchés nocturnes in nearby villages where you can enjoy local food amongst locals accompanied by good wine and music.

Elsewhere, visit the grand châteaux of the Dordogne (Château des Milandes and Château de Beynac are both less than half an hour away from Sarlat), stroll around elegant gardens (Les Jardins de Marqueyssac by candlelight is especially atmospheric) and visit picture-perfect riverside villages such as La Roque-Gageac and Domme, both classified as ‘Plus Beaux Villages’. Heading north instead, the famous caves of Lascaux are also within easy reach.

Hot air balloon rides are a great way to admire the landscapes of the Périgord Noir or simply canoe along the Dordogne River in glorious surroundings. There are of course wonderful walks, tree-top adventure centres and fantastic cycling routes including the 29km-long voie verte stretching from Sarlat to Cazoulès following a former railway line passing magnificent Dordogne countryside.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Canoeing or kayaking along the Dordogne river, long walks through ancient forests or even hot-air balloon rides across magnificent landscapes – the Perigord Noir and beyond offers so much for children of all ages.

There are of course a wealth of caves to explore across the region with the famous pre-historic caves at Lascaux near Montignac and the Gouffre de Padirac further east. Combine a visit to the latter with Insectopia, a museum dedicated to insects!

If you love swinging through the trees then there’s a tree-top activity centre only 10km away with activities for all ages from toddlers (2+) to grown-ups! There’s also some great cycling paths, mountain biking and even rock-climbing, especially in the Lot region near Rocamadour.

In nearby Souillac you will find Quercyland, a waterpark with all sorts of water-based attractions or for rainy days you could head to the Musée de l'Automate, with its eccentric collection of old toys.

Finally, animal lovers could spend the day at La Forêt des Singes, again near Rocamadour, where you can see more than 150 Barbary macaques in a natural environment. Even closer to home is the Zoological Reserve Calviac with a great variety of animals to look at in beautiful surroundings.

  • Magical Chateau on a Hill overlooking the River Dordogne and Valley!

    on 12/06/2024

We spent a week recently at Chateau les Tourelles and absolutely loved it! The house is quite grand and elegant and sits high up overlooking the river and valley below. Despite the endless rain (we did have some sun every day!) we enjoyed our time there immensely and hope to return soon. There are nine en-suite bedrooms that are very comfortable and lovely, each with their own flair. Very old world with recently updated bathrooms and great mattresses! The kitchen is perfectly appointed with whatever cookware, serving piece, plates and glassware etc you could possibly need. We made a few wonderful meals from the goods we found at the local markets. If there’s anything you are missing the property manager Martina is right there ready to help with anything. She’s on the property and available but not in the least bit intrusive, only super helpful. We rented bikes and explored many towns along the bike path which is at the end of the driveway. The medieval villages are stunning with so much history and steep stone walls and winding lanes through them. The owner Cassandra was very accommodating and helpful with whatever we needed and made great restaurant suggestions and day excursion suggestions. We hired a chef Teresa for 2 lovely dinners at the house. Delicious and wonderful! We loved her and her assistant Sarah. Thank you Chateau and the Dordogne region for letting us enjoy your charms. We absolutely loved it and hope to return!

  • Breathtaking transformation!

    on 07/09/2020

A truly magical fairytale castle overlooking the Dordogne in a vast area of private grounds. There is an enchanting walk to Carlux and a little climb up to some ancient ruins up above the Château. The owners are extremely friendly, generous and kind. I cannot capture in photographs the reflection of the breathtaking transformation they have created! Dressing gowns, towels, pillowcases and even aprons are finely embroidered and each room has a different theme furnished accordingly. The attention to detail in every part of the house and surroundings is utterly stunning and beyond anyone's imagination.

  • The experience and memories will stay with you

    on 26/08/2020

Luxury these days is ostentatious and expensive. If you are bored of gimmicks, the look at me photos, and shows of flamboyance and want to return to a time when it meant doing something rare, something magical and getting great pleasure then this is it. As a workaholic, I was only meant to stay a few days but I cancelled my trip to Rome without any sense of guilt. You know when something is special.
The grandness of the chateau hits you as you drive through woods to its door. It is a huge palace but when you walk into the kitchen you instantly feel at ease, a sense of calm and belonging as if you have always lived here. The vastness means you can go hide but also easily fall into one of many rooms to join in the chatter and the laughter; the odd glass in hand.
The ambience makes you appreciate spending time with friends and loved ones. This is not an escape. It is a return to reality. To nature, to walks in the woods, to scrabbling up steep hilly banks to find Roman ruins. An adult returning to childhood freedom. Losing yourself into another world.
All the bedrooms have their own individual character. I slept in the Venetian Room. I know nice sheets but these were really nice sheets. I slid into sleep every night. Everything is top quality but you don’t need an engineering degree to turn on the shower. It is so pleasantly gadget free.
Let’s face it, every luxury hotel, every luxury spa, every special Swedish cream; it’s all the same bought from the same store, boring and instantly forgettable. But this is simplicity, beauty and elegance. The experience and memories will stay with you.

  • Best Stay Ever!!

    on 18/07/2018

This Chateau is the most fabulous place we have ever stayed. We were 16 and everything was absolutely fabulous. There are ten bedrooms, so we had rooms that we didn't even use! We ate dinners and lunches outside (there are two different long tables, so that we were always in the shade, depending on the time of day), we spent every afternoon (and some evenings) in the pools and the kitchen and dinning room are spectacular. The house has absolutely everything you could possibly need, and some surprises like bocce, croquet, cooking tools, kids toys, board games, etc. It's spectacular and it should be impossible not to have a fabulous time. Isabelle, the owner and manager is absolutely lovely and the staff (cooks, sommelier and housekeepers are wonderful).

  • Brilliant Experience

    on 15/08/2017

We were all very impressed by the welcome that was given to us and the rapid response to any questions or requests ---especially the promised champagne and wine which was summoned up so speedily.
It's an amazingly beautiful chateau and we had great fun there with the generous support.
Thank you particularly for organising a splendid trip to the Domme vineyard and the excellent restaurant we lunched at afterwards.
We had a wonderful week and particularly enjoyed the views of the Dordogne River from the bedroom windows and terraces of the chateau.
I wish you every success with the chateau in future and thank you once again wholeheartedly for your very considerate care of our group -- and our holiday.

  • What a wonderful time we all had

    on 21/06/2017

What a wonderful time we all had at Chateau Les Tourelles. The house is so beautiful and well set up. And we all enjoyed meeting you. You are so welcoming and helpful. We will all remember our times sitting out in the garden having drinks and dinner with those wonderful views. And what a beautiful part of France! I can see why your parents wanted to have a place there. I have spent the last two nights in Aberdeen and it is grey and bleak. I miss the beautiful greens of Perigord and the soft, honey- coloured stone of the buildings. However, now I'm on the ferry and we sail soon for the overnight trip to the Shetland Islands. Regards, Marion

  • Un chateau magnifique

    on 16/01/2017

Bien amicalement, Rebecca.

  • We had a wonderful time

    on 16/04/2014

By way of feedback, I can report that we had a wonderful time at Chateau Les Tourelles, and we were well looked after by the owner. The chateau was very comfortable with everything we needed to make it a memorable holiday. Thank you for all your assistance in organising such a great location!

  • Fabulous

    on 11/03/2014

I was lucky enough to stay at the chateau towards the tail end of last year. I absolutely agree with the review below that it's a wonderful place to stay but can also confirm that the following changes have been made:
    - A new improved wifi has been added and I had no problems with it during my stay.
    - The chateau can be cool outside of the summer months on account of the thick stone walls (but you can just turn the heating up if you need it).
    - The outdoor pool can be cold outside of the summer months (but you certainly don't need it any warmer in July & August) - it just depends if you're lucky with the weather.

  • Had a wonderful stay here.

    on 19/06/2012

    Had a wonderful stay here.
Very big! & Peaceful. Grounds are massive.
All the little handy amenities cork screw, cake tins
    etc.) are provided.
Would have been good to bring/know: A hot water bottle
    Wireless internet reception not good if you move away from the modem bc thick walls tend not to be permeable to the WiFi signal;
Outdoor swimming pool is very cold especially if, like us, you don't bother to put the cover on.
    REALLY lovely.
