Chateau de Fremont, a luxury chateau in Burgundy, was built in 1900 for the famous actress Cecile Sorel by her lover. The vast 10-acre estate is ideal for grassland and forest walks, angling in a fishing pond, swimming in a private pool, and practicing your serve on the tennis court. Outdoor enthusiasts will love Morvan, a protected natural park nearby, and the excellent vineyards of the Cote d’Or will please wine lovers.

The castle’s interior has been refurbished to a high standard. The 12 bedrooms, some with room for 4 people, are perfect for families travelling together. Gather in the Orangerie, an expansive chateau annex, for large dinners, workshops and receptions. Catering is available, or you can barbecue and dine outside on the terrace. With a library, television room with home cinema, sitting room and lounge, your entire group will be entertained on a rainy day.

The chateau’s location near the village of Morlet (2 km) means you can visit museums, exhibitions and historical sites at Autun and Beaune. Epinac (8 km) has restaurants and shops, including a small supermarket.

Reach Chateau de Fremont via the Lyon Airport (200 km) or the TGV station at Le Creusot/Montchanin (20 km).

The nearest airports are Paris (300km) and Geneva (230km) and the nearest town is Morlet (2km). The Château is part of the Commune de Morlet, a tiny country village. The village consists of just two farmhouses and the château. The village of Morlet, a small community of 80, is only a little bigger and is just 2 kilometres away.

The château is an excellent starting point for exploring the local area and taking part in a wide variety of activities. It is located south-east of the Morvan between Autun and Beaune.  Beaune, Autun, Nolay, Chalon, Dijon, and Chateau Chinon are nearby and provide many kinds of touristic and cultural opportunities: museums, festivals and exhibitions. The area also includes numerous châteaux and other historical sites, including world famous vineyards and wine cellars where you can taste and buy excellent Burgundy wines by the bottle or ‘en vrac’. The château has all the information needed to plan your trips.  Restaurants, a small supermarket, a bakery and a butcher are only 8 km away in the small town of Epinac.

There are also excellent walks available around the chateau, with many trips starting at the chateau. They range from 4km upwards depending on how strenuous you want the walk to be, but all of them will provide stunning views and sights. The Morvan is the perfect place for walking and would be ideal for you to bring a picnic, or get the chateau to prepare a picnic for you!

The nearest golf course is in Autun, an excellent 9 hole course which is 20 km from the château and 18 hole courses can be found in Beaune at 32 km, Chalon at 30 km and Dijon. Angling is also very popular in this area and the chateau can obtain a permit for you should you wish to do this.

There is plenty for children and families to do in and around Burgundy including visiting a zoo, an adventure park, going go-karting or making pottery. There are also excellent restaurants suitable for families. Children also enjoy spending time at the chateau and making the most of the swimming pool, the tennis courts, the play ground and the many ball games that they can play on the lawns.

Owner Profile

How long have you owned the property?
8 years

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
The place….it’s really lovely….

Are there any interesting stories in its history?
The château was built in 1900 as a lover's gift to Cécile Sorel, a famous French actress. In 1941 the château was sold to the Red Cross to be used as a hospital and sanatorium. Some maps, echoing that era, still show a red cross to indicate Château de Frétoy. During World War II the château functioned as a war hospital. The château’s own power station dates from that period, where locally produced agregates provided the château’s energy requirements.During the eighties the château was sold to La Vie Active, a charity organising holidays for disabled children and orphans.

Reviews

  • Nice big property!

    Created on 29/07/2018

A large family party of 24 spent 10 days in July at Chateau de Fremont. We have spent several intergenerational family holidays together in France and Italy and so are used to the sort of properties available for large parties. An honest review follows:
    - The location is fabulous, with beautiful grounds, a tennis court and lovely swimming pool, which was much appreciated as it was unusually hot there.
    - The caretaker/manager lives at the restaurant/ chambres d'hotes on site and she was really helpful. We ate at the restaurant on two occasions and the food was delicious. They even catered for our vegan member, I would recommend eating there.
    - The bedrooms were fine, the beds were comfortable.
    - The kitchen was a great communal space, with a huge dining table.
    - There were two downstairs sitting rooms and another smaller dining area, these were great to escape to, when you needed some peace and quiet. The tv with satellite channels was useful.
    - There are plenty of tables and chairs outside and a couple of small BBQ's for your use, it is a pretty place to sit and eat.
It was a great holiday and there aren't many properties of this size and price to rent.

  • Three days of laughter and smiles

Posted by Gilbert J. on 31/10/2016

My booking with Oliver's Travels was for a weekend at the Château de Frémont in Burgundy. I discovered the place on their website and it seemed a divine intervention when I discovered that the only weekend free of bookings coincided with my 80th birthday. Without further fuss I was able to invite the fifty of so persons in the three branches of my family spread through France and England to come together for the first time in 23 years. Three days of laughter and smiles. Not a tear, not a grump !

  • We had a great stay at Chateau de Fremont

Posted by Katherine D. on 08/09/2016

I booked Chateau de Fremont with you and stayed there at the beginning of August this year (6 - 13th). The gathering was for my father in laws 70th and the whole family (24 of us) got together and had a great time.
Chateau de Fremont was great because of the facilities also and would like our next holiday home to have similar to entertain energetic children and adults! Swimming pool, golf, tennis, fishing - close to small town, markets - not too far from airport. Thanks so much!

  • Wonderful environment

Un marriage, mais pas comme les autres...

We wanted to have special wedding with the theme 'A room with a few'! A special 3-day festive program with 40 of our closest friends and family
in a wonderful environment in one of the niciest areas of France... and that's what we've got in Chateau!

  • Successful and memorable holiday

Posted by Patrick Cooper on 07/12/2011

Firstly, to let you know we had an excellent week at the Chateau; the weather was pretty good and the proprietor, catering and caretaker's teams all really kind and helpful. The catering service was just right and was used most nights by some 18-20 people. Everyone had a good time and full use was made of the tennis court and swimming pool. We would recommend it to others. Thank you Oliver and the Chateau personnel for all the help in arranging this successful and memorable holiday.
