Set in its own beautiful and secluded grounds, The Millhouse provides exceptional accommodation in the heart of the Charente Maritime countryside. The relaxing surroundings combine with the charm of this historic mill to provide you with the perfect way to unwind.
The home has ten ensuite bedrooms in total, Wi-Fi throughout and beautiful grounds featuring a stream and rivers, landscaped gardens and wild flowers. There are 9 bedrooms in the main house, available for up to 18 guests whilst a self-contained one-bedroom apartment is also included in the higher rate for an additional two guests.
Memorable evenings can be spent in the beautifully lit dining room where you can gaze at the cleverly designed glass feature overlooking the stream running through the room towards the waterwheel. In the summer, head outside and relax by the poolside cabana, enjoy meals together by the stone-built barbecue or prepare pizzas in the traditional bread oven.
Families are made to feel especially welcome with a wealth of facilities from board games by the cosy fire to table tennis and football, not to mention the lovely children’s play area outside. Then of course there is the glorious heated swimming pool with its own kids corner and ample space for grown-ups to relax on the poolside terrace.
Close to the historic towns of Saintes, Cognac, Taillebourg and St Jean D'Angely, the Millhouse is in a wonderful location. It’s only forty minutes from the coast where you’ll discover wonderful sandy beaches and a strong sense of the region’s maritime history. Nearby you can also visit beautiful vineyards and market towns selling local fresh produce and seafood. The Charente Maritime region has an exceptionally sunny climate and is a wonderful area to visit.

Location
About the surrounding area of The MillhouseClose to the historic towns of Saintes, Cognac, Taillebourg, St Jean D'Angely and only 40 minutes from lovely beaches in the area, the Millhouse is in a wonderful location. There is easy access to Angoulême, the capital of the Charente, the major train stations, international airports, and only 4 hours from St Malo ferry port.
The Charente Maritime region is exceptionally sunny, and has its own micro climate as a result of the Azores' anticyclone, making for mild springs and pleasant autumns. Along its 470 kilometers of coastline, the Charente Maritime has around 110 beautiful sandy beaches. Needless to say, seafood is a speciality here. It is steeped in culture and history and boasts 500 years of Maritime history from the imposing outline of Fort Boyard to the stocky coastal fortifications of La Rochelle. Inland and around the area it boasts over 400 stunning Romanesque churches. It is a place where the land meets the sea and is reflected in the beautiful shades of the wooden shutters adorning the honey coloured sandstone houses.
The house sits among the farms and vineyards that produce the famous Pineau Charente aperitif grapes which produce a sweet wine and is located approximately 14 kilometers from the main Saintonge city of Saintes (saintonge means saintes area). Saintes was originally a roman town situated on the banks of the Charente river. At most times during the year there are various festivals and markets selling local produce, fresh fish, seafood,poultry, fruit and vegetables.
The nearest major airport would be Bordeaux (Merignac Airport) which is about 1-1/2 hrs drive away. La Rochelle a slightly smaller airport is located 45 minutes drive away and there are many budget airlines flying from the UK to La Rochelle.
Paris is about 4-1/2 hours drive from the mill. The mill is also accessible via TGV trains from Paris and the nearest station is Saintes or St Jean D'Angely. Both towns are about 15 - 20 minutes drive away.

For a wedding with that extra wow factor, this award winning beautiful and historic ivy clad mill must surely fit the bill. Its extensive peaceful grounds and picturesque gardens, fragrant with lavender with the sound of flowing streams, are perfect for a bijou wedding or the pzazz of a larger celebration in marquee complete with crystal chandeliers. What better place to tie the knot than in front of the sparkling fountain on the lawns or in an orchard glade. The region has its own micro climate influenced by the Azores, leading to warmer springs and autumns and it’s well known for its sweet white wine Pineau Charente. There is an excellent French chef at the mill who caters for all the weddings and is sure to impress your guests.
Wedding Reception
A seated reception for up to 30 people could take place on the outside terrace, otherwise a marquee can be hired on the lawn to host up to 120 seated guests.
Dancing can continue in the marquee until 2am or smaller groups can move inside the house for music until midnight. Events to finish by 2am.
Wedding Ceremony
A ceremony could take place either in the orchard or in front of the fountain in the grounds beside the house.
The owners can provide you with a contact for an English-speaking celebrant.
Where to Stay
20 people can sleep in the house and up to 100 more guests could be accommodated no more than 20 minutes away from the mill.
The owners are able to recommend local transport firms.
Wedding Planning
The owners can recommend an English-speaking wedding planner or clients may arrange their own.
On request, the owners can help organise all the extras required for a wedding/event.
Catering
The venue will take care of all the catering and requires you to use their food & drink services for your event.

Perfect relaxation in a beautiful house & gardens
Spent a week staying at The Millhouse in celebrating two 60th birthdays within our family group of 14. Nothing was too much trouble for the owners who even opened the outdoor pool early for us as we were lucky enough to have fabulous, warm spring weather! All bedrooms very comfortable & there is masses of space to spend time relaxing throughout the house and garden. We hired bikes for 5 days and the local cycling is leisurely and on very quiet roads. The highlight of the week was being catered for by local chef Sebastien's team on two separate evenings in the very large dining room - pure luxury!

Stunning house with friendly, helpful owners, great pool
Brilliant holiday with extended family aged 2-64 years. The Millhouse is a beautiful, comfortable house with plenty of space and lots of places to relax, eat and drink both inside and outside. Lovely pool. The owner helped for several months before we arrived with wonderful recommendations and bookings - loved the pain au raisins from Taillebourg, Le Scorlion in St Jean d'Angely, The Garden Ice Café and Clos de Cors in Saintes. Enjoyed the daily arrival of the boulangerie van bringing breakfast - and had 2 fantastic catered meals from Sebastien's team (again all sorted with Manisiah's help). Would love to visit again!

Great attention to detail
Our heartfelt thanks to you all for making our Wedding day perfect. Having spent weeks searching for the right venue you really did pull out all the stops to ensure that we had the best day imaginable and we can’t thank you enough to this.
The attention to detail in the millhouse is first class, the hospitality we received was superb and not only did this make our Wedding stay extra special but every single one of our 90 guests wished they could have stayed longer.

The Wedding planning service was exceptional, nothing was missed and even though I am the most stressful person imaginable, Jenny made certain that the entire Wedding was stress free for us all and really pulled out all the stops to make our day magical. I wanted to take a moment to drop you a short note to express once again our genuine and heartfelt thanks for everything you personally did to make the event an immense success. Your combination of professionalism, organisational prowess, 'can do' approach and personal warmth went a long way towards making the entire project enjoyable and that bit easier to manage.
When we arrived, you very much came into your own (not to mention all the pre-arrival work you undertook) and nothing seemed too much trouble from the important stuff (timing of the ceremony, making guests feel welcome, etc) to the mundane (My inability to open plugholes in baths without adult supervision springs to mind). We both came away feeling that you are worth your weight in gold.
I feel we should take you up on your offer to stop in for a coffee or a glass of wine when we are next in the region.
With a project as complex and as emotionally charged as a wedding, you personally delivered a flawless result for us and we are very grateful that you gave up that high paid job in Britain and chose to run a well-hidden (and very beautiful) wedding venue deep in the breathtaking French countryside. Back to earth with a bump from what can only be described as the best Wedding imaginable. Our daughter and son in law were overwhelmed with everything you did for them.

Fairy tale wedding
Thank you so much for making our day the most wonderful day of our lives, it was perfect, just like a fairy tale…. Not only that, you made our whole stay at the Millhouse perfect. Right from the start you were all so helpful. I didn’t even know where to begin planning a wedding, maybe that’s why I kept putting it off but Jenny made me feel at ease throughout! Even from early Skype conversations, where you asked me what kind of wedding I had in mind, slowly piece by piece it came together. With your experience and knowledge, I discovered what was right for us and what wasn’t.
We wanted a smallish wedding with just 50 people but there was a part of me that was worried that I would regret that decision. That it would feel a little less special or spectacular, that it would miss the magic and ambiance that I wanted it to have. I need not have worried, the day had it all and more.
On the big day, we did not have a single problem. You ensured it ran smoothly and was stress free for us. My maid of honour was shocked at how relaxed I actually was! Everything was perfect, down to the smallest details. When we had a question you were there to answer it…. I cannot praise you all enough!!!
Our main advantage was not to have all of the guests on site with us, this made the whole experience even more personable and I would recommend this to anyone wanting to get married – keep the Mill for just immediate family and friends.

Such an amazing place!

We are definitely dreaming to come back one day
From all over the world we flew in this week (Netherlands, Hawaii, Curacao) to celebrate moms birthday. WE had a wonderful week at the mill. The house is lovely, very child friendly and has everything you need. Manisiah and Steve are wonderful ! We hired Harriet, a very professional photographer to make pictures of our family gathering which was a great success ! We are definitely dreaming to come back one day !

We are thoroughly impressed and have enjoyed our stay at The Millhouse. We have discovered a new holiday spot and a magical coastline that has been a well kept secret in the area. Were looking forward to many more holidays and good times with our hosts Steve and Manisiah.

Were very impressed with the attention to detail in this property. The quality of fittings and furnishings were above expectations. We have spent a week as part of a group of 16 and everyone had ample room to relax and enjoy their stay. We would highly recommend the Millhouse as a first class holiday home

We have had such a wonderful stay here at The Millhouse! It was so much better than expected. A beautiful house in such an idyllic location, it has just been amazing. We had an opportunity to relax and celebrate with our closest family and friends with our every needs met in a place that feels like home. we actually wish it was home! The kids have so enjoyed the pool and play toys in the back garden. Your gardens are so beautiful too! Thank you Manisiah and Steve for all your help and thank you to both of you for sharing your beautiful home with us. We hope to be back someday.

We can only echo what other guests have said. This is a lovely house. The surrounding gardens are a pleasure, beautifully kept, and the pool area is fantastic. It is child friendly, but fun for adults, too. We would certainly recommend.

We are most certainly not lost for words ! We never felt alone, Manisiah and Steve were incredibly helpful in making us feel at home and offering invaluable local advice. What a wonderful holiday. We will never forget the beautiful setting, the fabulous food and wine and the fabulous company. Nothing could have topped it better than the engagement of my little sister. Brilliant. We can't wait for the wedding at The Millhouse.

Memorable Christmas
More than a luxurious manor house, we were hoping for a space where a family of 15 aged from 3- 73 could relax individually as well as come together as a family. The Millhouse enabled us to do all of that. The amenities are comprehensive and luxurious but the design and configuration of the space means a large and diverse group can relax and celebrate together. However the defining difference between The Millhouse and other places we have stayed is the passion and competence and hospitality of Steve and Manisiah. Thank you Manisiah and Steve and of course The Millhouse for a memorable Christmas.
