Louis Vuitton and Ralph Lauren. You can also shop at the Chattle Village in Holetown for souvenirs amongst gorgeous tropical gardens. The Folkestone Marine Park in Holetown was set up to preserve the coral and shallow areas inhabited by the islands turtles. Two of the four reserve zones are for motorised aquatic sports, another is a scientific zone and the last, a recreational zone for snorkeling and discovering the amazing underwater world.

Bridgetown is an Istagram-worthy scene of waterfront cafes, Parliament Square, bridges, a boardwalk running along the river and across the water, bustling colonial streets with pastel coloured malls and warehouses and fruit carts and souvenir trinkets. Its an interesting eclectic mix. The streetscape has barely changed and streets have their original names such as Liverpool, Lancaster and Swan. The city’s popular waterfront area is know as Constitution River. It was England’s first port of call on the Transatlantic Slave Trade crossing. With its UNESCO World Heritage status, it is a place not to miss.

Barbados has some incredible beaches, mostly calm on the upmarket west coast but thrilling with rollers on the east. The turquoise waters are stunning and the marine life interesting and vibrant. You will find many watersports on the beaches including SUP, kayaking and jetskiing on the west coast and surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing on the south-east coast. Some of the best beaches are Mullins Beach which you can visit from Royal Westmoreland on a shuttle service, Gibbes Beach and Paynes Bay on the west coast, Carlisle Bay and Accra Beach in the south, Silver Sands and Crane Beach in the south-east and Bathsheba in the east.

Rum has been produced in Barbados for over 350 years. Barbados rum is recognised as one of the strongest in the world! You can visit a rum distillery during your trip to taste and buy some. The Mount Gay distillery was founded in 1703. At the visitors centre you can discover the secrets of rum-making, hear pirates tales and sample the award-winning rums.

Barbados’ rolling interior is sprinkled with unique plantation houses, lush botanic gardens and sugar cane fields. Though the beaches and the golf are strong pulls, you should not miss out on this beauty.

About the Island & Getting There

About Barbados

At first glance you could be mistaken for thinking that Barbados is purely a beach holiday destination, but you're urged to reconsider this common belief. The island of Barbados is peppered with astonishing landscapes (both coastal and inland), enchanting locals, sublime cuisine, intriguing rums, fascinating wildlife, symbolic architecture and a selection of striking holiday villas.

Delve deep into the history of the island and start your holiday by visiting Sunbury Plantation House & Museum. This former plantation was built in 1660's and the premises are scattered with antiquities that delicately detail a recent history of Barbados. St. Nicholas Abbey also provides an insightful representation of Sugarcane production, Bajan artefacts and a wonderful observation point at Cherry Tree Hill. If you’re keen to visit one of the oldest Parliamentary buildings within the Commonwealth and appreciate the democratic legacy of Barbados, drop by The Parliament Buildings. This neo-gothic congress can be found in Bridgetown and act as a representation of Barbados’s Independence. There is so much history present throughout the island and as a result, Bridgetown and its Garrison has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, which the locals are very proud of.

Great efforts have been made to persevere the natural beauty of Barbados, so if you’re drawn to the exploration of National Parks and multicoloured gardens, it won’t take you long to realise that Barbados is a haven for such paradises! Within the Andromeda Botanic Gardens, Farley Hill National Park, Flower Forest, Hunte's Gardens and Welchman Hall Gully - visitors, and Botanist alike, will be lost for hours admiring these astonishing botanical parklands. Keep an eye out for the Dwarf Poinciana, or Peacock Flower…it’s the national flower of Barbados.

Bajan’s take their food very seriously! If you and your fellow travellers are enticed by the gastronomic aspect of holidaying, we believe you’ve selected the right island. With every aspect of cookery mastered; from pickling to freshly prepared dishes, sweet & savoury, fragrant & spicy and of course, the bountiful choice of seafood. Check out the food stalls in Paynes Bay Church – where vendors exhibit locally made dishes & street food that will scintillate the taste buds. At the end of every working week, locals and tourists both flock to Oistins, for 'Fish Fry Day'. This is a must for those who haven’t undergone the experience! The evening starts with barbecues and then ascends into a joyful party. This caps off a busy few days of work for locals as well as the 'strains' associated with serious holidaying.

Barbados is of course iconic for its Beaches & Rum…so why not bring them together? You will have to go out of your way not to be able to find a beach bar along the west coast of the island, as well as the countless Rum Shops. Yes, you’ve read correctly, Rum Shops! These small and locally run businesses embrace the Bajan spice of life, in liquid form. Very delicious! If you’re searching for something a little more special, take a trip to the east coast and visit Sand Dunes Bar and Restaurant at Windy Hill, for an unforgettable experience.

Barbados is a distinct and striking part of the Caribbean. It’s a great fit for all types of travellers, as the island really does have it all. For a little more information about this delightful island, check out our guide to a remarkable stay!

This wonderful villa is perfect for families. It offers a fabulous swimming pool and so much space. The Royal Westmoreland resort boasts an excellent kids club which offers a very

good range of activities for four to twelve year olds. It also provides an Island Sitters programme with plenty of fully qualified nannies, babysitters, house sitters and tutors.

Children love beach days and turtle adventures in Barbados. They can enjoy fun-filled days swimming with the turtles, rope swinging and walking the plank over the crystal clear turquoise water and being pirates for the day with the Jolly Roger pirate ship. The captain and crew greet you dressed as pirates and welcome you aboard. There are stops for swimming and snorkeling by the Bajan Queen shipwreck in Carlisle Bay. The Atlantis Submarine dives 150 feet below the surface to show you colourful corals, shoals of tropical reef fish and the shipwreck. Special night dives feature nocturnal sea creatures. Paradise Beach offers a children’s playground and is very family friendly. The woodland area is ideal for picnics.

In Holetown, children enjoy live entertainment at venues around the town and movies at the Limegrove cinema. The charming emporia at Chattel village enjoys colourful shop fronts and is a great place for children to buy souvenirs.

Barbados horse racing is great fun at the Garrison Savannah. There are street vendors, parades and picnics as well as the races. The main event of the season is the Sandy Lane Gold Cup which attracts many competitors from all over.

The Barbados Wildlife Reserve is home to monkeys, caiman, armadillo, squirrel-like agouti, tortoises, iguanas, peacocks and flamingos. Feeding time for the unique green monkeys is in the afternoon. It is a great afternoon trip.

Children also love visiting Harrison’s Cave and going into the deep on a tram to discover one of the island’s natural wonders. They enjoy touring the scenic gully around the cave, a fabulous opportunity to spot a green monkey or two.
