If you wish to travel slightly further afield, Antigua’s amazing landscapes and 365 beaches lie waiting to be discovered!
At just 281 km², the island boasts a beautiful beach for every day of the year. Here, you will always be spoiled for choice when it comes to your next dip in the ocean! Only a ten-minute walk away, Pigeon Point Beach is a good place to start, with a sheltered cove and tropical trees offering seclusion and shade. The stunning Galleon Beach can be reached within five minutes by car, boasting spectacular views of the Pillars of Hercules, as well as turtle sightings and deep blue waters. To reach the magical, isolated beach at Rendezvous Bay, you can follow a path from the rainforest on foot for an hour and a half, before plunging into the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean Sea.
Famed as the sailing capital of the Caribbean, English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour are home to picturesque marinas where you can watch superb yachts come and go whilst soaking up the vibrant atmosphere and nightlife that Antigua’s southern coastline has to offer. From South Point, walk for fifteen minutes and you will come to the magnificent Nelson’s Dockyard National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site featuring an eighteenth-century British naval dockyard. As well as being a site of great historical and cultural significance on the island, this is also a popular venue for maritime events. Nelson's Dockyard offers adventure-seekers plenty of activities on dry land, including several fantastic trekking trails. Consider hiking to Shirley Heights, a restored military lookout with panoramic views, which happens to be one of the island’s most popular destinations. Shirley Heights is well known for its famous Sunday afternoon party, where visitors are welcome to take part in the festivities. Listen to live Caribbean steel drum bands, try some of the local food and rum punch and take in the out-of-this-world panoramic views as the sun begins to set on Antigua.

Drive along the coast before heading inland towards Fig Tree Drive and within twenty-five minutes you will reach the incredible Antigua Rainforest Canopy Park, where a day of ziplining and rainforest adventure awaits! There are a range of fun and friendly eco-activities available here, with options to suit all age groups. With knowledgeable and experienced instructors to guide you at every step along the way, you will cross suspension bridges and rope obstacles whilst ziplining your way above the tree-tops and crisscrossing a stunning gorge. Not for the faint-hearted, this exhilarating day out varies in intensity, with ziplines throughout the rainforest at various heights and lengths. Don’t forget to take a break in the magical twin tree houses tucked away in the dense rainforest.
The hiking and trekking trails of Nelson’s Dockyard are another great way to get closer to nature, this time with your feet planted firmly on the ground! Make your way from the marina at Nelson’s Dockyard up to the panoramic views of Shirley Heights on a quiet weekday afternoon, for a scenic hike that everyone will remember. This is a relatively easy hike but do make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and pack plenty of water. There are handy downloadable trail maps available online.
Back down at Nelson’s Dockyard, there is plenty of fun to be had out on the water, with sailing excursions for beginners and more experienced sailors available. Watersports are widely available throughout the island, with sea kayaking and paddle boarding among the most popular activities for younger visitors. On land, horse riding enthusiasts can saddle up by arranging a visit to a local riding club. Horseback tours can be booked to suit a range of age groups and abilities, taking in gorgeous valleys and pristine beaches with the help of new friends. For an introduction to a truly important facet of Antiguan culture, why not take the family to watch a local cricket match? The island is fiercely devoted to its national sport, which is played everywhere, though official matches tend to take place on weekends.
Younger visitors will enjoy the vivid colours and sounds of the lively English Harbour, where the whole family can visit any number of local restaurants to sample some of the island’s delicacies.
