The outstanding Emley Woodhouse is a spacious grade II listed Georgian country home, perfect for those wanting a rural getaway. Seamlessly blending original architecture with modern, understated elegant style, the home is filled with thoughtful and playful design touches, contemporary comforts all within an unparalleled spot of sublime natural beauty.

Set within rolling grounds, in the heart of the windswept West Yorkshire moorlands that inspired the Brontë sister’s great literary contribution. The superbly finished interior exudes style and a welcoming warmth atmosphere. Making it an ideal luxury self-catered holiday home to enjoy with the whole family.

Nestled in charming gardens filled in the spring and summer months with roses, hydrangeas and apple trees. The garden is a beckon for wildlife with tawny owls, hares, rabbits and badgers being regularly spotted in the private garden and neighbouring open fields. Country-lovers can venture through the garden gate which leads directly onto a local footpath offering access to a nearby stream and woods to explore freely. Imagine sitting back, in the softening evening sun, fragrant with blossoming plants, as the family comes together for a game of croquet before a wonderful Aga-cooked meal (courtesy of a local farm shop), seasoned freshly from the houses herb garden.

This charismatic and commanding home can accommodate a group of fifteen to seventeen guests, spread across seven bedrooms, including two empire and three super king-sized beds. Large or extended family group, for celebrations, occasions, or merely some of England’s finest country air!

Whilst being so gracefully understated, this home doesn’t miss a trick when it comes to all the modern touches. Guests can rest assured top-range appliances, and modern kitchen appliances are in place - this is a home where visitors can slow the pace, away from the crowds and pace of modern, urban living. Whilst still being surrounded by all modern comforts.

Emley Woodhouse is a dignified home, with impeccably finished interiors - classical, yet with a flair of designer panache. The living room is inviting and strikingly calm, with ambient lighting and sherbet-dust pink and cream tones. Making it a perfect space to come together after a busy day and enjoy warm evenings with board games and books.

This calm, yet characterful home offers a vivacious eat-in modern style kitchen, with sleek, contemporary touches such beautiful feature lighting, within a timelessly elegant palette of soft, powdery greys and solid timber furnishings. Every detail has been thoughtfully covered, whilst the Aga sets the right tone for a country retreat. For more formal dining, the separate dining room offers a striking, distinguished room of impressive proportions with a dining table for fourteen, set within soft aqua tones, original fireplace and sumptuously regal décor. The adults will enjoy spending evening downtime with a gin and tonic in the cosy snug with its wood-burning fire, soft fabrics and cosy furnishings.

The bedrooms are gracefully opulent, offering magnificent proportions, ample natural light and the thematic muted yet playful tones: soft mustards, aqua, dove greys and cool poster art. Scandinavian style furniture blends with original features in an artfully renovated home. The unique spirit of gorgeous architecture remains, along with sleek contemporary finishes: marble walk-in shower rooms, designer lighting and vibrant-toned fabrics.

The delightfully enchanting Emley Woodhouse is a wonderful choice for a country home away from home. Many visitors are attracted by the wealth of nearby attractions including historic houses to visit such as Nostell, East Riddlesden Hall and the Marsden Moor Estate. Along with the fabulous Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Hepworth museum and Kirklees Light Railway perfect for a family day out. Emley Woodhouse is both an idealistic weekend retreat for those wishing to escape to the country, and an ideal base for longer breaks to explore the wonders of Yorkshire.

Emley is a village in West Yorkshire, nestled between Huddersfield and Wakefield, in the Kirklees district. The village dates back to Anglo-Saxon times. West Yorkshire’s rugged attractions are rich with cultural heritage, industrial history and elegant spa towns.

Whether it be riding, hiking, or birdwatching, the wonderful West Yorkshire moors are a preserved enclave of natural beauty. Should it be a “pies and puddings” cookery course, a day at the spa, or a trip to Yorkshire Sculpture Park (a leading international centre for contemporary sculpture), everyone’s needs can be met!

Barnsley Museum and Discovery Centre is dedicated to the people and history of Barnsley, whilst the National Coal Mining Museum for England is a unique place where the history of mining over several centuries is preserved both above and below ground.

One of the North’s leading holistic health and wellbeing spas, Alexandra House is tucked away on the outskirts of Huddersfield - the spa is housed in a historic building that has been restored to provide a stunning wellness retreat.

Cannon Hall is a stunning Georgian country home and museum, set in seventy acres of historic parkland and beautiful landscaped gardens.

Yorkshire, the largest county in the UK, is world-renowned for its food culture; from the foodie paradise that is York’s cafe lined streets, many famous delicacies have emerged from this corner of the UK: Wensleydale cheese, Yorkshire pudding of course - the famous Yorkie chocolate bar, as well as rhubarb, ginger beer and licqorice.

Fittingly, there is an array of farm shops close to Emley Woodhouse and excellent pubs and restaurants. Our pick would be Blacker Hall Farm shop, and the Woodmen Inn which provides warm open fires and live music!

Owner Profile

How long have you owned the property?
I've owned Emley Woodhouse for just under five years but I always used to see it as a child and wonder who lived there, it was a kind of childhood dream to own it!

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?

The house itself has gorgeous proportions, and I love the Georgian architecture, but it has to be the view that drew me to it.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?

Apparently, Emley Woodhouse was the Dower House for Bretton Hall.

Do you have a favourite room in the property?
My favourite room is the snug, one of the smallest rooms in the house, its so cozy and peaceful and has such a relaxing feel to it especially when the fire's roaring!

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?
To anyone visiting the house, I would recommend visiting the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, it has some amazing sculpture by really famous artists and is also a place of extraordinary natural beauty.
Really eat? I would eat at the Three Acres pub up the road if I fancied a lovely dinner out, or visit The Woodman for a cozy pint.

A stunning house with gorgeous views. Very spacious and well equipped. Gorgeous interior design but also felt very homely. Already trying to find an occasion to come back.

  • Amazing!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the booking at Emley woodhouse.
We had the most amazing time time there and the place is stunning!! My hen weekend was made so special and it was everything I ever wanted. My girls loved it there and we are already planning a reunion next year.. The pictures on the website don’t do the house justice at all. Lee met us on arrival and she was wonderful. The place was everything that any one could ever need and the spacious rooms made our stay so easy. Once again thank you.

  • One for the memories!

Well, it's not easy turning 60, but this house really lifted the load! Impeccable house, can't fault! Great weekend, lots of fridge room for alcohol and lots of room to crash.

Thank you for making this weekend one for the memories! Will recommend to EVERYONE.

  • Amazing time!

All families had an amazing time. The toys were incredible and the rooms all so beautiful. Also, I need more candles in my home now. Thank you!

  • Beautiful!

    Posted by Nick on 01/02/2019

A truly beautiful house - very comfortable and extremely well appointed (particularly the kitchen and entertainment for all ages in the living room). The owners were very friendly, informative and made us feel welcome. The outside space is expansive and would be great in the summer (we visited in the winter), and walking access to a local wood is ideal for dogs. Highly recommended.

  • Wow!

Posted by The Barber Family on 22/01/2019

A very memorable 50th birthday weekend!! Thanks for your help to make it a wonderful celebration. Emley Woodhouse is very thoughtfully filled with lovely touches - you have thought of everything for adults, kids and dogs alike.

We all enjoyed the weekend and would love to come back. We will recommend you to our families and friends.

  • Perfect for large family get-togethers

    Posted by James on 04/01/2019

"What is not to like about Emley Woodhouse?" It was my first time renting a house like this in the UK and we were pleasantly surprised. I wanted to pick somewhere quiet, and tranquil for my parents 40th wedding anniversary and it was both those things.
The challenge when your traveling with a large group, 8 adults and 6 kids is to find a place where your not on top of each other. The house is very well spaced out with lots of different areas if you wanted some quiet time. The décor is modern and the artwork is something that just makes the property. All rooms are good and spacious.
One of the wow factors of this property is the garden and the walks straight from it onto the fields. Kids loved the freedom! While we were there the weather was beautiful which just made our stay there such a memorable one. We had a lovely party for my parents 40th anniversary and we wont be forgetting this house in a hurry.

  • Something magical...

    Posted by Holly on 14/12/2018

There’s something magical about Emley Woodhouse. I’ve returned a few times now with my daughter, friends and their children and the house is a joy. Plenty of room for the kids to run free and then quieter, more peaceful rooms for the adults to convene. Each room has its own quality that makes you feel really at home and spoiled. On top of all that the decor is sleek and modern but homely and welcoming. There are wonderful walks and pubs nearby, plus the Three Acres restaurant just down the road who do delicious food. And Leeds is only a short drive away should you fancy a day of shopping or a movie. The only downside of Emley is having to leave. I genuinely couldn’t recommend this house highly enough...

  • Wish could stay here forever!

    Created on 22/11/2018

I'd love to stay here forever! Not often do you get an gorgeous old pile of a house that's not stuffy and old fashioned. This is cool and luxury! Will be booking again. Barely left. Kitchen really well stocked, had lovely hospitality and the whole process relaxed and classy! Well done.

  • Wonderful House

    Posted by Tim on 30/07/2018

Thank you so much for the opportunity to stay in such a wonderful house. The amount of thought that has gone into the decor makes it truly special. We loved having a TV room for the kids and one for the adults!! So peaceful and relaxing, all high end luxury. I hope to come back one day with my own side of the family. Missing Emley already.
