Two-bedroomed Dionysos Villa is part of Dionysos village with a private pool, modern interiors and shrubbery-studded grounds. Built on top of a jaw-dropping canyon and overlooking the Bay of Kumlubuk on the Bozburun Peninsula in Turkey, the villa boasts panoramic sea views. Well worth the extra price tag, it’s part of a luxurious complex. Hence, you have access to quality facilities, including two restaurants, a serene spa and weekly events like wine tasting, yoga and moonlight cruises.

Designed with your utmost privacy in mind, this peaceful villa stands on a great mass of rock that juts into the sea. The rustic stone architecture elegantly blends into the natural surroundings. Enjoy the warm sun on your cushioned sun lounger and terrace before taking a cooling dip in the turquoise waters of your private outdoor pool. Inside, the design is minimalist with contemporary-cool and natural-coloured furnishings and beautiful Turkish art like painted ceramic wall plates.

The two bedrooms are equally seductive and stylish (one double and one twin room), with plenty of holiday wardrobe space, and there’s a fully-equipped kitchen with an oven and a microwave should you wish to dine in. You can also relax in the lounge on the comfortable sofa, with doors leading straight out onto your pool terrace, flooding the villa with natural light. Extra thoughtful features include Wi-Fi, complimentary daily water and a safety deposit box.

In the resort, the two restaurants only use home-grown organic produce, and the chefs have been trained by Didem Senol (Time Out Award for Top Istanbul Chef 2010) for a magical journey of taste. You can also book in for a massage or other treatment to feel balanced, revitalised and grounded.

Located on the craggy mountainous Bozburun Peninsula, Dionysos Villa is the perfect starting point to explore this beautiful stretch of the Aegean coastline. The moon-shaped bay is just a one-hour sail from lively Marmaris town with waterfront restaurants, a traditional shopping bazaar and a castle. In the surrounds, you can traverse the wooded mountains, coastal villages and beaches, and get a feel of real rural Turkey.

Dionysos Villa is set in a peaceful spot, nestled into the hillside at the fabulous Dionysos Village which overlooks majestic Kumlubuk Bay on Turkey’s mountainous Bozburun Peninsula. The villa is a short drive from the beach – perfect for swimming and snorkelling – and is in sight of the harbour of Marmaris. There is a complementary shuttle service to the beach. The village also has a spa, honesty market for supplies, 3 hole putting green, boutique, gym, laundry service, tennis court and wine cellar.

For outdoor adventuring, you can hire mountain bikes and head to the local villages (Bayir, Sogut and Selimiye) to catch a glimpse of Turkish life as it’s been for generations. You can also walk along a 3km forest road to the summit of the Palamut Mountain with incredible views of the beautiful Greek islands of Rhodes and Symi. A hidden forest trail will take you down the western side of the mountain where you will observe the rich flora of the maquis.

Other ways to spend your time if you can drag yourself away from the villa include a visit to ancient sites such as Stratonikeia, a luxury day at sea on one of the restored lifeboats, Olive oil or wine tasting, yoga or dinner at the exclusive Nar restaurant. These are arranged by the Dionysos for an additional charge.

You can travel to vibrant Marmaris, where you can stroll the cobbled streets of the old town and visit the castle and museum. Haggle for local honey and traditional rugs in the covered bazaar and discover locally produced organic delights such as cheese and spices. Finish off the day with a massage in a traditional Turkish Haman (baths).

Marmaris & Bozburun

The South West coast of Turkey offers the perfect climate for your holiday, boasting over 280 dry days a year and an average June temperature of 28 degrees Celsius in this area, with sea temperatures of 23 deegress celsius.  For keen walkers the paths of the Carian way will take you around the area.

Sat on the site of the Carian city of Physkos, Marmaris started welcoming European tourists in the 1980’s. At the time big hotels were what the travel agents were selling. The surrounding areas remained unspoilt and in recent years villas have popped up in less touristic areas. Marmaris still has a picturesque vista and the areas around the harbour, Netsel Marina and the castle are worth a visit. The castle was reconstructed by Suleyman the Magnificent during his expedition against Rhodes and houses a small museum. You couldn’t find better places to try an authentic Doner Kebab than some of the restaurants behind the bazaar, or for a more sophisticated version go to the Baris Ustu Kebabci in the Netsel Marina.

The Bozburun Peninsula represents the real hidden Turkey. In recent years wealthier Turks have headed to these parts to enjoy the thyme-scented air that is said to be ultra-healthy due to being high in oxygen as a result of the trees and proximity to the sea Throughout the peninsula villagers live as their ancestors did a century ago, tilling the land of a small holding, keeping bees or working in ancient trades handed down through generations. The women work hard to keep house and land. Every village has a teahouse where you’ll see the men making business over a game of Tavla (backgammon), slowly drinking endless cups of crystal clear black Cay (tea), drunk out of tulip-shaped glasses. The peninsula has loads of lovely restaurants, simple but delicious food. Enjoy fish in Selimiye; choose mezes from the kitchen and wash it all down with a glass of Lion’s Milk, the slang for Turkish Raki, an aniseed spirit that becomes white when water is added.

Travelling around the peninsula, there’s Orhaniye where you can walk the sand spit, Turgut where you can see the ancient trade of carpet weaving and visit the waterfall to cool off, especially if you purchased a carpet. Sogut is a hidden gem, and where a long seafood lunch is the way to go. There is a bee ‘museum’ in Osmaniye which pays homage to the local production of pine honey. Turunc, Amos and Kumlubuk sit on the southeastern coast of the peninsula. Kumlubuk has a sweeping beach, and a sandy shingle, water-sports and a few restaurants. Amos has a smaller pebble beach and a popular restaurant selling a range of Turkish favourites. Turunc is more of a resort, with a few streets behind the beach, plenty of eateries, shops and bars. Give it a little time as it is somewhere people fall in love with. Further around is Icmeler, which merges into the bigger Marmaris.

  • Best of both

    on 14/09/2017

We have just left after a wonderful week with our teenage kids, staying in the villas with private pool, within the resort. The week was perfect in every way. We loved having the ‘best of both’ with a private villa for lounging, and evening swimming in the pool, as well as all the benefits of the hotel – delicious buffet breakfast, fabulous bar looking down the mountain to the sea, and restaurant serving lovely lunches and dinners from their homegrown ingredients. The things that make the hotel very special are:
    1. The views, which are superb from this high perch
    2. The layout, with the rooms spread up a mountainside in separate little buildings interspersed with steps, trees and terraces, giving a feeling of space and privacy
    3. The pool with its jaw dropping view, shaded loungers, fresh towels and kept immaculately clean
    4. The owner and the staff – Ahmed is a welcoming, classy and charming host, and his team of staff are all cheery and helpful.
The beach club is a bonus as it means you always get a great spot and comfy beds, no matter what time you get there. Aircon/wifi all worked well. Daily cleaning/bed making etc in the villa – like a hotel. No mosquitos to speak of. We were worried about coming to Turkey given all the recent news, but in this little private estate on this quiet bay we felt secure and a long way away from it all.

Only watchouts are: The villas wouldn’t suit young kids as the bedrooms opens to an outdoor staircase/terrace, so you can’t keep the doors open at night, also the pools ares not particularly suited to small kids as there is no really shallow part, and the beach is pebbly rather than sandy. It is better for older kids - the independence they had was great – they could do what they wanted, when they wanted, independently of us, in a safe contained environment. You have to get used to the wasps at mealtimes – although the staff provide smouldering coffee grounds (!) which seems to help a bit.

Other recommendations: The boat trip was a highlight – a gentle tour of some nearby bays with swimming from the boat and a delicious lunch on deck, in their restored lifeboat; Supper at the nearby Yacht Club which serves chinese food as a change to the usual Turkish menu; Market day (Monday) in nearby Turunc to pick up local produce for light meals and snacks in the villa.

  • Pretty and Charming

    on 02/08/2015

We stayed in the 2 bed villa, with a small kitchen, seating area and good sized private pool which was perfect for a family. We were at the top of the resort but really the steps were no problem for guests with no mobility issues. The wifi was very patchy which was a slight irritant.
We ate regularly in the hotel having prebooked 7 nights half board. The food is excellent, we didn't have a bad meal, the tasting menu at Nar was outstanding. Having never tried Turkish wine we were delighted to find some great bottles.
Several evenings we took the transport to Turunc for supper and a wander around the usual tourist shops.
The Gentleman's Boat was a wonderful day, made especially fun by our fellow guests. We also got the water taxi to Marmaris for a change of scene.
All the staff at The Dionysos are lovely; hardworking, charming and make the holiday extra special.
Other guests were a friendly bunch. There were lots of repeat guests but we didn't find it cliquey. There were a couple of families but the few small children were very well behaved. It wouldn't be a good choice for little children due to all the steps & ledges, nor for guests with reduced mobility.
The biggest downside for us was the heat (of course not the hotel's fault) but we did find it draining & it meant we were unable to mountain bike, play tennis or hike the gorge. For this reason if we returned it would be in June or September.
