Situated at the foot of the Taurus Mountains, Kalkan lies on Turkey’s Turquoise Coast. With a lovely harbour and pebble beach, this charming town has many rooftop restaurants and bars which enjoy stunning views of the Mediterranean.

Kalkan’s Blue Flag pebble beach is right by the harbour, but you could also head out to the spectacular Patara Beach. Just a 20-minute drive away, Patara is the longest beach in Turkey and has stunning views. This sandy beach has lots of loungers and isn’t usually crowded. There are all sorts of other options, such as the nearby Kaputas Beach.

Kalkan is situated on the route of the 500km Lycian Way, Turkey’s most popular long-distance walking trail, so this area is great for getting out and about. Kalkan is ideal for water sports like sea kayaking, jet-skiing and scuba diving.

Boat trips are another popular way to take to the sea. You will see plenty of wooden gulet boats in the harbour at Kalkan, ready and waiting to take you on a tour. One destination you might want to check out is mysterious sunken town of Kekova – this was once a prosperous city but it’s now completely underwater.

You are sure to want to hang out in Kalkan’s Old Town. The little streets tumble down to the harbour and offer lots of shopping and dining opportunities. Around the harbour is a particularly popular spot, with lots of restaurant terraces looking out over the water. Kalkan is a relaxing place to go shopping too, great for handmade crafts and fashion, with lots of boutiques and jewellers. The weekly market, held in town every Thursday, is a good place to get to know the locals.

All over the wider region, you’ll find some fascinating archaeological sites. Look out for the ancient remains of cities like Tlos, Myra and Xanthos, or the impressive ruins of Patara, which include a huge theatre and Roman baths.

Islamlar

Islamlar sits 8 km above Kalkan. Once the place Kalkan folk went to cool off at one of the trout farms built to make use of the mountain’s springs. Today Islamlar houses many a villa, enjoyed by Istanbul Turks who prefer a holiday in slightly cooler and cleaner air. Here the locals grow grapes and pomegranates, but you’ll mainly see the men sat gossiping next to the local teahouse. The trout farms remain a place to come for a wonderful fresh meal, or a breakfast consisting of fresh local fare. The rocket will be the freshest & most tasty you’ve ever had; and the fresh chips cooked in olive oil take some beating.

Kids

The kids will find plenty to their liking at Villa Cedir. This villa comes with two pools, amazing hot tubs, table tennis, TV, Wi-Fi and so much more – even a sauna and a hammam they will love.

There is wonderful countryside to explore all over the region. Be sure to check out the spectacular Saklikent National Park, about 30 minutes’ drive from Kalkan, for a family-friendly day out. As well as seeing the mighty canyon at Saklikent Gorge, kids can try exciting activities like zip-lining and river rafting. You can also walk through the gorge itself, provided the water isn’t too deep, plus there’s a swimming pool and lots more fun for kids.

There are beaches galore along this coast, and Kalkan’s offer the chance to try snorkelling, diving and more, with expert tuition available if these are new to them. Nearby Patara is home to the longest beach in Turkey is one you are all sure to love. Patara also has some fascinating archaeological sites – you can explore an ancient theatre, parliament building and Roman baths.

When they’ve built up an appetite, Kalkan really delivers the goods when it comes to dining. There are numerous excellent restaurants with terraces found around the pretty harbour. You can easily find international dishes but Turkish food is sure to impress them, from the meze starters to the incredible desserts.

There are lots of outdoor pursuits to take part in, from boat trips to water sports and adventurous thrills like paragliding. Kayaking down the Esen River is a popular pursuit, taking you from Xanthos to Patara Beach, or you could take a trip on a gulet. These eye-catching wooden boats provide a lovely way to see the beautiful coast around Kalkan.  Some boat tours take in places of interest such as the Sunken City of Kelova, and offer the chance to jump offboard for a swim.
