Featuring a stunning marina, the town of Fethiye is perhaps the jewel of the Turquoise Coast. This historic city was once the most important in Lycia, and these days it’s a well-connected place with a lot to see.
Fethiye is a fantastic departure point for exploring the Mediterranean, and you will find all kinds of craft down at the harbour offering this opportunity. The traditional wooden gulets are a fine choice. Destinations within reach include Oludeniz, Kas, the sunken city of Kekova and Butterfly Valley.
The area’s history gives you plenty of archaeological sites to visit, with the Tombs of Amyntas in the cliffs of Fethiye one must-see. At more than 2400 years old, the tombs provide a wonderful view as well. Behind the harbour is the Telmessos Roman theatre, built in the 2nd century BC, which is in the process being restored. Nearby, Fethiye Museum contains exhibits of artefacts from Telmessos (as Fethiye was formerly known), Kaunos and Tlos.
The ‘ghost village’ of Kayakoy is a fascinating, abandoned village in the mountains with crumbling houses and churches, where Greeks and Turks once lived side by side, and well worth exploring further. Discovering the full history of the place will make your visit even more interesting.
Fethiye’s marina and surrounding area provide many opportunities to dine, with local seafood a staple of the restaurant menus. You may also want to visit the local fish market which supplies these establishments, which also offers a dining experience.
If you want to explore the region further, be sure to make some excursions to the likes of Saklikent Gorge. With the deepest gorge in Turkey, this spectacular national park offers various activities from hiking through the water of the gorge itself to zip-lining. Other places of interest include the lengthy Patara Beach and the many mud baths of Dalyan. Jeep safaris are a popular way to see the most significant local landmarks, including these.
Dalaman International Airport
Katranci Bay Nature Park
Situated on the ancient city of Telmessos, Fethiye is named after one of its most famous ‘sons’, the aviator Fethi Bey. An earthquake in 1957 damaged central Fethiye, so many of its buildings have been built since then. You can, however, see a Lycian theatre, Lycian tombs (including the rock tomb of Amyntas) and visit the Fethiye museum for more history and artefacts. The centre of Fethiye boasts a covered market area, half of which is given over to the local fish market where you can choose your catch from one of the centre stalls and then get it cooked in any of the surrounding restaurants. The whole of the area is shadowed by the mountain of Babadag where paragliders take to the skies, landing on the beach at Olu Deniz.
Fethiye’s Tuesday market is worth a visit. Traders come from the outlying villages to sell the wares from their smallholdings. Furrowed browed men with cloth caps, and ladies in floral bloomers will sell their produce amongst the lads trying to get you to buy their designer fakes! It’s all in good humour. Try a little bartering and see if you can do some good business. Go to the spice stall and you will get some amazing spices. Look for the Kar Serbeti, like a cinnamon slush or Ayran, a salty yoghurt drink both guaranteed to cool you down.
Olu Deniz & Calis are where people tend to flock for a beach but there are now a few private beach clubs along the coast between Olu Deniz and Fethiye which are worth a visit. There are also beach clubs situated around the lagoon, all with sunbeds, restaurants and drinks service. Hisaronu is more commercialised and hosts a large selection of bars, restaurants and gift shops.
All the family will love Fethiye – there’s plenty in and around the city to keep the youngest entertained. The beaches are just one highlight, with the lovely Calis Beach just a few minutes’ drive from your villa. The sheltered beach and lagoon of Oludeniz is a popular choice, while you’ll find a little peace at more secluded spots like Aksazlar and Boncuklu.
The family-friendly Fethi Bay Park is a lovely place to chill out or play, with a children’s zone and lots of green spaces. During summer, look out for the eye-catching light shows on the dancing fountains of nearby Ugur Mumcu Park.
There are some great ways to get around the Turquoise Coast, and boat trips and cruises are perhaps the most fun of all. Several tours will take you around a number of the local islands, often incorporating swimming stops and lunch along the way. An on-land alternative is a Jeep safari, which is a good way to see the area’s inland gems too. You can go pretty much anywhere, whether it’s to visit historic monuments and archaeological sites, or destinations such as Saklikent Gorge.
Speaking of which, this huge national park is really a must when you’re visiting with kids. As well as seeing the mighty 18km canyon, kids can try exciting activities like zip-lining and river rafting, and walk through the gorge itself, as long as the water isn’t too deep. You will find other attractions there too, including a swimming pool, shops and restaurant.
If they are into water parks, Fethiye delivers two to try – there are lots of slides and pools at both Oludeniz Water World and the Sultan Aqua Park. You can all enjoy a very pleasant day at Yaka Park, about 45 minutes from Fethiye centre. This cooler spot in the Xanthos Valley has streams of trout, waterfalls and shaded areas of nature, as well as a great restaurant serving local fare.
Head to Dalyan and you could also venture into one of the many mud baths this coastal town is famed for. Apparently good for your health and your skin, a dip in one is a dirty affair but kids might just love it. At Krater, look out for a mud assault course – an additional challenge if they just can’t get enough.
For something a little more educational, there is always Fethiye Museum. Not far from the striking Tombs of Amynta, you’ll find an array of Lycian artefacts inside and an open-air gallery outside.

How long have you owned the property?
We had been started its construction on April 2018 and completed at August 2019
What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
All the region is surrounding by 30-40 years orange trees and if you visit us in spring you can see both orange flower, orange and next year’s oranges at the same time on trees.
Do you have a favourite room in the property?
To not to choose one of these as my fav villa, I did some specialities for each in different places to be fair between them. For example, my favourite kitchen cupboard has been painted for Volans 4 and Volans 1 has my favourite master bedroom. Volans 3 (Alanza) also has best organised garden for me
For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
They definitely should walk through the path near the river under huge trees till reaching the beach in 15 mins. Even if who likes trekking suggest them to walk along the beach until reaching the lake walk around it and watch sunset on the hill.
Boat trip (one of the best sea in the region)
Fresh fish and seafood
Blue Lagoon (Oludeniz)
Sunset at Babadağ Mountain
What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
We are located in between Fethiye and Göcek in rural area and distance to beach is 1.1 km. So we suggest you to rent a car to travel easily. If it is your first time to Fethiye there are lots of places to visit in this region.

Magnificent new villas in the orange garden. Clean pool, fully equipped kitchen. The hostess is ready to help on all issues, organize leisure. Oranges in the garden can be consumed and to make freshly squeezed juice, fine fresh fruit as a compliment upon arrival. Quiet, birds sing in the morning. There is a barbecue, jacuzzi loungers and other amenities. We definitely recommend visiting!
We will definitely be back!
Well, don't know where to start, Sinem who runs the show was great, welcoming, flexible and very very helpful. The place is a small compound of villas with private pools, very clean, organised and a very successful business model. The villa was spotless clean, comfy and attention to detail was considered in every corner of the villa. A supermarket is within a walking distance from the property. There is a pretty walking pathway to the sea at the front of the compound. We enjoyed our stay. Ah forgot, there are lots of orange trees in the villas where you are invited to pick some oranges and add some fresh juice to your breakfast. Will definitely be back, thanks Sin you and your team were great.
