Located in the mountainous Alt Penedes wine region, 1-hour west of Barcelona sits this beautiful four-bedroom country property. Originally a 17th century barn where roof tiles were made, the property has been lovingly converted into a gem of a home. The surrounding greenery and peace and tranquillity make this the ideal place to relax and recharge.
Inside, the decor is light and airy. Slate flooring, stacked stone walls and natural finishes sweep through the open-plan living area creating a soothing atmosphere. A huge open fireplace overlooks an inviting dining table that seats eight people, while the well-equipped kitchen is kitted out with a wood-fire oven and every utensil you could possibly need (the owner, after all, is a professional chef). Stairs lead from the living area down to a cosy chill-out room where you can enjoy a siesta after a leisurely lunch while a spiral staircase sweeps up to the first floor.
There's a cosy lounge on the first floor where you can relax on the sofas with a film or simply gaze out the window at the sweeping views. Leading off from here are the four bedrooms, all featuring whitewashed walls, wood-beamed ceilings, double beds and glorious views of the garden. There are also two separate bathrooms featuring organic toiletries and luxury bathrobes for extra comfort.
Back on the ground level, there is plenty more to discover outside. The property prides itself on being eco-friendly and has a well-developed kitchen garden and an enclosure for the resident chickens. But the real highlight is the natural swimming pool surrounded by vineyards, sprawling mountains and ancient oak, olive and pine trees. Start the day with a dip in the crystal-clear waters or enjoy a quiet coffee while watching the sunrise. The natural pool is 100% ecological and has no chlorine or salt or any chemicals. Its filtering system is a combination of plants, UV, filtering beads and other natural systems, making the water 100% clear and without any pathogens but also pure enough to drink and open your eyes without any problems. You'll find the silence here is magical, punctuated only by the croak of a frog or the buzz of a dragonfly. During the day, bask in the sun on a lounger or cook some locally sourced meat on the barbeque, then dine al fresco on the shady terrace. There's also a Zen garden located at the rear of the property, where you can sit by the pond and watch the goldfish swim.
The more active might want to explore the six hectares of private forest or enjoy a hike through the mountains. But at the end of the day, simply settle onto one of the comfy seating spots around the fire pit and marvel at the endless night sky. Although the property is set in a rural location, it's only a 5-minute drive to a traditional restaurant, winery, and the small town of Pontons. The Penedes region is full of activities including wine tasting, hiking, cycling, restaurants, natural waterfalls as well the local town of Vilafranca only 20 km from La Masia Forn Teuler, so you'll never be bored during your stay!
At La Masia Forn Teuler, you will be sharing your stay with the owner and residential chef, Sophie! Sophie is from Australia and moved to Barcelona to open its first Australian eatery. Since leaving Barcelona and moving inwards into the Catalan countryside, she has been running La Masia Forn Teuler as a way to show guests the wonders of Spanish and Catalan cuisine, set against the backdrop of the gorgeous Alt Penedes region. What you should know…
- The mountainous location is wonderfully peaceful and ideal for those looking to immerse themselves in nature
- The natural swimming pool is available to use, dependent on the weather although children must be supervised at all times due to it being unfenced
- Please be aware that the owner does live on the property too with her 3 dogs and is there to help you with anything, especially with the cooking!
- Please note that there is no air conditioning available in this property, but the thick stone walls of the masia help to keep the interior cool during the warmer months. Fans can be supplied in the summer months and outdoor heaters for the cooler months
- Whilst the location of the villa is set in a rural location yet perfect for hiking and walking, a car is recommended in order to explore what else this region of Spain has to offer!

Location
About the surrounding area of La Masia Forn TeulerLa Masia Forn Teuler is set in the mountainous region of Penedes in northeast Spain. Famous for producing some of the country's best wines, Penedes is home to endless vineyards and lush forests. The area is quiet and surrounded by natural beauty, making it perfect for hiking, walking, and horse riding.
The 11th century hermitage perched on the mountainside is visable from the gardens which is a short walk from the property. Sitges and Garraf are worth a visit and the castle in the nearby town of Sant Marti Sarroca is a must see. Guided guided walks can be arranged with prior notice.
For a day out, head to Vilafranca del Penedes. It's a 20-minute drive away and known internationally for its wines and cavas. The old town is a pretty place for a stroll with its historic buildings, colourful houses, thirteenth-century church and seventeenth-century chapel. Be sure to also stop at the Museum of Wine Cultures of Catalonia (VINSEUM) and learn everything there is to know about the history of wine. Afterwards, head to the Museum's Tavern, where you can sample a glass or two of the town's famous produce.
Although the Penedes area is wonderfully tranquil if you prefer to spend the day by the sea, it's a 40-minute drive from the property to the coast. Popular beaches can be found in the glittering seaside town of Sitges. The beaches here are long and sandy and fringed by shady palms and excellent facilities. After a peaceful swim, browse the boutique stores, discover the many galleries and museums and marvel at the Modernista works of art in the Museu Cau Ferrat. Alternatively, linger over a tasty lunch at one of the excellent waterfront restaurants while watching the stylish, well-heeled crowd along the promenade. Sitges also boasts a vibrant nightlife, and come evening, the place teems with partygoers who flock to the numerous cocktail bars, nightclubs and discos.
No day trip would be complete without a visit to Spain's most cosmopolitan city, Barcelona. This vibrant city is a 1-hour drive from the property and is packed with groundbreaking art, architecture and style. Stroll along La Rambla with its buzzy bars and restaurants and admire Barcelona's cathedral. Gothic in style, it dates back to the fourteenth century and is one of the city's most magnificent structures. Be sure to also take in La Sagrada Familia, Antoni Gaudi's Modernista masterpiece. Other not-to-be-missed experiences include viewing Pablo's portraits in the Museu Picasso and soaking up the views from Gaudi's Park Guell.

Best Suited For: All AgesLa Masia Forn Teuler is a tranquil place with a great deal of space both inside and outside. Although the property is not suitable for younger children, older ones who enjoy being outdoors can take advantage of the natural surroundings. They can spend the day swimming in the natural pool, hiking through the forest or exploring the mountains on horseback. When the day is drawing to a close, gather the family in the huge kitchen and spend time cooking together. Better yet, have a meal prepared by the resident chef so you can spend more time watching the sunset over the mountains.
The beaches along the coast are ideally suited to families with their soft sand and excellent facilities. The popular seaside town of Sitges is a good choice for a swim and is a 40-minute drive away. Older kids can also try their hand at watersports with water-skiing, parasailing and jet skiing on offer. Afterwards, the whole family can explore the Museu Cau Ferrat with its displays of work by Modernista artists, including Picasso.
But for a full day of activity, head to Barcelona, which is a 1-hour drive from the property. This cosmopolitan city is packed with attractions, and older kids will love the live music on La Rambla, surreal architecture, and plenty of stylish stores and arts and craft markets. Not-to-be-missed attractions include Museu Picasso and Gaudi's awe-inspiring La Sagrada Familia. There are a large number of galleries and museums dotted about the city, but kids won't want to miss visiting the Chocolate Museum. Here they can learn about the history of chocolate, view chocolate models and, of course, sample plenty of the creations. Alternatively, they can explore the cosmos at the giant, interactive science museum.
Other places of interest include the aquarium (where the more adventurous can swim with sharks) and a zoo featuring lions, elephants, giraffes and dolphin shows. But for more adrenaline-fuelled adventure, head to Barcelona's Tibidabo amusement park. It features 30 attractions, including a Ferris Wheel and a ghoulish house of horrors. Once the kids have exhausted the rides, splash in the water fountains and cool off with a cool drink from the cafe.

It feels like quite the privilege to be able to celebrate your wedding in Spain at this beautiful retreat in the Catalan wine country yet only an hour from the vibrancy of Barcelona.
Dating back to the 17th century, this eco-friendly home is an idyllic venue for rustic wedding in the most stunning and authentic surroundings with vistas of vineyards, protected forest and rugged mountain scenery. Before your guests arrive, listen out only to birdsong, croaking frogs and dragonflies.
For the day itself, your host (also a professional chef and writer) can help arrange your special day by providing food menus, curated wine lists as well as recommended suppliers for flowers, photography and more. Guests can watch the romantic ceremony from soft hay bales, then gather for drinks around shady wine barrels before feasting on the atmospherically lit terrace.
For an intimate boutique wedding in Catalonia with an emphasis on good food, organic wine and eco-friendly practices, it’s hard to imagine a more perfect destination.

Wedding Ceremony and Reception
There is a flexible layout for combined ceremony and reception.
There is also the option for guests to be given access to the 11th century chapel to hold their ceremony. This chapel is located on the hill above the property, built by the Romans, and is only available to guests on request and at an extra charge. Please note that the road up to the chapel is fairly steep, so the owner recommends that guests travel up to it by open-air truck, or even a horse and carriage!

The venue can help arrange planning services, furniture hire, decorations, extra cleaning (mandatory in some cases - see below), marquee hire, and events before and after the event (all at an extra cost).
Catering
In-house catering and an open bar can be provided – please enquire for menus and pricing (the price depends on the number of guests and how long the bar will be open for). Please note there are no children’s menus and that self-catering for events is not permitted.
Wedding Suppliers
The venue can recommend a list of wedding suppliers or you can use your own. This includes suppliers for flowers, photography and more.
The venue can provide a portable sound system. If a professional sound system or speakers for live music are required, this should be organised by guests.
Where to Stay
Up to 8 guests can stay at the La Masia Forn Teuler. If you need more accommodation, the owner is happy to suggest nearby hotels and masias for you to book separately.

Please note that all decorations should be environmentally friendly and not damage the flora or the property.
The venue has on-site security personnel throughout the wedding.
The event can continue until 2.00 a.m. After this time all music should be turned off to respect a neighbour in the valley.
There may be obligatory cleaning charges for large events (30 to 45 guests) – please enquire.
Please note that any event rental may be subject to additional charges, venue hire fees and to a higher security deposit, which will be in addition to any published rental rates and fees.
All events are on request only and subject to prior agreement from the owner, who reserves the right to refuse all events without their prior authorisation.

How long have you owned the property?
This is our 9th year on the property. We spent 2 years doing a full reno and bringing The Old Girl back to life. When we arrived, there was no city water or sewage and the electricity was very basic. We peeled back the ugly render on all exterior walls as well to reveal the beautiful local stone facade. The building dates back to 1650 and we have been so privileged to have the opportunity to release the true beauty of this once very humble building.
What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
The views just pulled us right in. They reminded us of the Blue Mountains north of Sydney where we would hike as children. The peace and quiet, birdsong and pretty perfect weather all year round makes living here such a pleasure. When I gave the real estate agent my wish list to find the perfect property for our tree-change, he looked at me wide eyed. It went like this: “I want a large historic stone property with land in wine country. The location must be near a nice village but not on the way to a village and must be easily accessible by bitumen road, but I do not want to see the road., It must be connected to the grid, but I do not want to see any electrical lines from the house either. It must have a licence to operate in tourism but not be in a touristy area” ... and this seemingly impossible list of wants was exactly what we found!
Are there any interesting stories in the property’s history?
The property is called Forn Teuler which means tile oven in old Catalan. This is because the property was originally where the typical Spanish roof tiles were made. Our terraced gardens are such due to excavation of the local clay for the tiles and the old oven we uncovered during the renovations in the main house and turn it into a spiral staircase joining the upstairs to downstairs. Every time I climb the stairs inside the cylindrical stone walls, I can't help but feel like I am passing through history.
Have you ever had any famous guests staying?
We did have a guest from Dragon's Den come to stay but I can't say who, only that they were very lovely, and we had a great chat by the fire after I cooked them and their group a delicious four course meal.

Must do?
So many of our guests say that simply soaking in the peace and quiet is so restorative that most people never want to leave. We have so many beautiful walks on offer; through the vineyards, in the mountains, to the local waterfalls and waterholes, to our very own 11th century hermitage perched on the side of the mountain and yet within easy reach. Our dogs love to take our guests on walks as well when requested.
Must eat?
Food is central to Spanish culture and eating seasonally is not optional but a way of life. One of my favourite seasonal vegetables, Calçots, is available only 3 months a year from December to March. In January the local town of Valls literally gets taken over by the Calçots festival where the streets are closed to traffic, and giant bonfires cook these leek-like alliums over a raging flame of vine pruning until each one is charcoal on the outside and juicy sweet within.

Guests also have the opportunity to forage for wild ingredients most seasons. Spring brings wild asparagus, summer offers wild fennel and sweet berries, in autumn the region is full of locals bent over holding woven baskets prodding around the oak trees looking for wild mushrooms. Most of our guests choose to spend the majority of their holiday on the property lounging around enjoying long lazy days and evenings in our garden and patio areas, picking fresh produce for lunch or dinner from our kitchen garden and swimming in our natural pool surrounded by dragonflies, butterflies and bright green little frogs perched on a lily pads.

An amazing holiday!
An amazing holiday! We went to stay at La Masia as two families, both with a 3 year old and a 6 year old. It was perfect, from the moment we got there till the moment we left. The area is stunning, from the terrace you look out across the valley and cant see another house just rolling hills, in the evening the sun sets are gorgeous and then being able to see the stars at night is beautiful. It's so quiet too, you get to really switch off. Sophie and Michael are wonderful hosts, generous and charming, around when you need them but never intrusive. We were invited to go on walks with them and their 3 lovely dogs (the kids adored them!) which was a great way to find out about the area and see more of the landscape.
We were slightly worried that the house might not be great with little ones (as its on a hill) but we shouldn't have worried, it was fine and very safe. The whole space has been sensitively and beautifully designed and decorated, the outside seating area in particular and the pool. We loved the pool, with it being natural we didn't need googles, our skin wasn't irritated by chlorine either. The hammock in the dappled sunshine...heaven...
Sophie is a great chef and she made us dinner one night was was delicious, would recommend. She also stocked the fridge for us so we had dinner and breakfast ingredients waiting for when we arrived so we weren't scrambling to find a supermarket. Other little touches like mini seats for the kids round the coffee table, a swing in the old tree, board games, giving us inflatables for the kids to use in the pool, letting the kids collect the eggs from their chickens... all really added to making us feel welcome and relaxed.
The whole experience just left us wanting to return. A massive thank you to Sophie and Michael, we are so glad we found La Masia. -
Outstanding!
Sophie has created an incredible experience in her property. Between home cooked meals, a beautiful setting, and interesting tidbits of information on local restaurants and stores, she really went the extra mile to make us comfortable and entertained. We would happily stay at La Masia again and we highly recommend anyone considering renting a villa in Spain to do the same. Outstanding!

Not only is this place picture-perfect, it is an exceptional place to have an overall 5-star experience in the middle of the Catalan wine country. You can enjoy a quiet and relaxed atmosphere in the middle of a lovely and elegantly rustic landscape, where you will be able to delight in the interesting nature that surrounds the property. You can even bathe in a natural pool while overlooking the landscape around it, which I thought was quite the unique experience! The host, Sophie, is exceptional!! She takes every detail into account to make sure that you have a wonderful stay in her home. And the food…I could not enjoy it more.

Sophie, the owner, goes above and beyond for her guests and truly takes pride in what she does. The accommodations were lovely and we felt right at home. We even hiked the property with Sophie and her 3 amazing dogs, learned about the history of the local culture, took a traditional cooking class featuring the cuisine of the local culture, and shared the one of the most unforgettable meals of our lives. Sophie and Michael are the Soul of the place, fused with the surroundings of full nature in a wonderful farmhouse where nothing is missing, everything with taste and refinement, the natural pool is superb, with its aquatic plants and its frogs everywhere. The contour, a marvel. An unforgettable healthy one to always keep in mind.

An impressive stay in an Eden of Alt Penedés
Our hosts, Sophie and Michael, have managed to make a paradise of beauty and harmony with the environment a reality, with great effort. A dream farmhouse: for the spaces and the silence, which invite you to enjoy the nature present outside and inside the house, which embraces you and encourages you to meditate, to create, to share unforgettable meals and dinners, in communion with a privileged environment. The spirit is enriched by looking at any point where one rests one's eyes. Two hermitages embedded in the omnipresent fault, full of intact forests, oaks, ashes and pines, are the horizon that presides over this unique space of peace. Contemplating those views from the natural pool, surrounded by reeds, bamboo, wildflowers, rockery with water lilies and native frogs, has been simply extraordinary. Rooms decorated with beautiful furniture, selected piece by piece. Each one with its own personality and with comfortable beds, from where one can delight in the views. Or the splendid kitchen, which with perfect equipment invites any stove lover to create new dishes for their companions in this room. An exceptional location in Penedés, close to everything, if you wish, but isolated from fierce urbanism. A really special experience that I've never had anything quite my whole life
Imagine a gourmet chef snipping green peas and herbs a few feet from you, while you and your partner cheers with the best cava you've ever tasted and have an amuse-bouche of homemade crackers with homemade green tomato jam and local blue cheese. Soft music plays in the background, a light breeze tickles the vines and plants and a gust of lavender and mint passes by. You're in the closest thing you can think of to heaven.
This snapshot from Sophie's amazing Masia in Alt Penedes is just one of many that I'm coming home with. It's a really special experience that I've never had anything quite my whole life. All the meals are cooked with love from Sophie, a former restaurant-owner and cookbook writer. The food is a little bit of everything, as she comes from Australia where cuisine variety is part of the culture. Almost everything is from her garden to your table, and the proteins are from the best vendors in Catalunya. Everything is sorted, all you have to do is enjoy the view and say "your welcome" to your belly.
The Masia overnight experience is equally filled with love and thoughtful details. It's a four bedroom, two bath house, fully equipped with everything you might need in order to feel like a king or queen. The towels, the mattresses, the linens, the rain shower, it all feels just so luxurious. There are thoughtful details in the home and all over the property, like little nooks to read, a zen garden to meditate, and a board game area.
Sophie is the perfect host. When you have questions or want to chat, she's always available. When you want to have some time to just enjoy the views or chat with your partner, she seems to float away, in this perfect dance that only experts in hospitality know how to do. She comes back exactly at the moment when you finish your last drop of cava with another amazing bottle of natural, local bubbly from the region. You feel totally, completely taken care of. And it's divine.
