Outdoor Pursuit & Activities
The Silver Coast has a wonderful coastline with family-friendly beaches including the local Praia del Rey sands and thrilling surf towns such as Nazare. The beautiful scenery is great to explore and totally unspoiled. The culture and history are evident in atmospheric towns such as Tomar and Coimbra.
Tomar is a fascinating, charming, quaint Portuguese town. During the 13th century, it was very influential as it was the religious centre for the Knights Templar, a secretive and powerful religious order based in the Convento de Cristo Convent. Tomar is set along the banks of the Nabao River and has a delightful, historic centre filled with pretty cobbled streets, ancient churches and quaint, traditional houses. The Charola Chapel at the Convento de Cristo is spectacular.
Coimbra is a historic, cultured beauty rising scenically from the Rio Mondego. It was Portugal’s capital city for more than a century. It is home to the country’s oldest, most prestigious and most beautiful university and definitely worthy of a visit. Its dark cobbled lanes, monumental cathedral and old stone walls are so atmospheric. On summer evenings you will marvel at the atmosphere with haunting notes of the Portuguese guitar and the deep voices of the fado singers.
Baleal, Nazare and Santa Cruz are some of the most popular beaches. The picturesque Nazare has pounding, exhilarating waves and is a surfers paradise. In the 15th century, Eleanor of Viseu discovered locals bathing in strange-smelling springs and founded Europe’s first hydrotherapy resort since the Roman times at Calda da Rainha. The original spa is now restored as a museum. Impressive ceramics can be seen at the romantic Museu de Ceramica set in a beautiful 19th century estate.

ABOUT THE SILVER COAST
The Silver Coast in Portugal, or Costa de Prata, is a stunning stretch of coastal towns on the western side of Portugal, neighbouring the Atlantic Ocean. The region remains largely unknown and therefore untouched by tourism, meaning those who do visit can bask in the extraordinary “silver” sand.
Another of the many reasons to love the Silver Coast in Portugal is its proximity to Portugal’s major cities. With Lisbon to the south and Porto to the north, the Silver Coast is well situated in between both of Portugal’s largest urban centres. At the same time, it is inexpensive, authentic, and relatively undiscovered.
The Silver Coast is home to some of the best beaches you’ll ever see in Portugal. Since it’s away from the main crowd of the country, the beaches here are wilder and more pristine. Also, being popular for fishing is a great place to try local cuisine and experience the culture.
The cuisine from the Silver Coast in Portugal is some of the finest that Europe has to offer and forms an integral part of the region’s culture. The area has a rich heritage, and tourists love the narrow, picturesque streets of the towns and villages that dot the countryside. The regional agriculture also adds an authentic touch, with numerous small farms, vineyards, windmills as well as fruit trees. Many local farmers grow soft fruits such as grapes, melons, pumpkins, and maize.
