Despite being just a 1 hour and 15-minute drive from the capital of Lisbon, Comporta is a hidden gem in the Alentejo region that combines the lure of the coast with countryside living. While many simply embark on a road trip to the village when staying in Lisbon or one of the nearby resort towns, over the years, Comporta has grown in popularity with holidaymakers looking to stay exclusively in the area. The village invites visitors to step away from the bustle of city life, and embrace a more relaxed atmosphere.
This secret paradise has gained attention from celebrities, seeking an uninterrupted escape and peaceful holiday. Comporta is uniquely located between rice paddies and the Atlantic Ocean. The white-sand beaches and fishing cabins are iconic to this area of Portugal, prompting a slow and tranquil pace of life.
Make no mistake though - despite the absence of hoards of tourists and thumping nightclubs, there is still so much to see and do in Comporta and the surrounding area.
The epic waves make surfing by the vast beaches a popular activity, while restaurants and cafes offer an authentic taste of Portuguese cuisine. Foodies won’t want to leave without sampling the black pig meat, an Alentejo speciality that is used in many of the local dishes.
The land is also rich in wine and olive production thanks to the nearby Alqueva dam. Spend some time visiting the numerous vineyards surrounding Comporta, and pick up a souvenir or two.
Of course, the rice paddies neighbouring Comporta make the grain a local delicacy. When paired with fresh seafood plucked from the Atlantic coast, you have a range of mouthwatering meals to try.
Continue to look to the seas and you may even catch sight of dolphins, creatures well-known for gracing the area with their elegant beauty. Explore the Sado estuary in a catamaran for a greater chance of spotting them, alongside other marine life.
You can also explore the pine forests or do a spot of shopping in the local boutiques in the village, with many products made from Comporta’s famed cork oak.
Beyond Comporta, the capital city of Lisbon is easily reachable via car or train and a highly recommended day trip. Just 20 minutes drive south of Comporta is the charming town of Melides, home to picturesque blue-painted houses, a covered market, and the breathtaking Melides Lagoon. Neighbouring Comporta, and again just a 10-15 minute drive, is Troia, an area that boasts one of the best golf courses in Europe and a marina that is perfect for windsurfing and sailing.

The Region
Comporta is surrounded by rice paddies, the ocean, sand dunes and pine forests. It's a unique place where you can connect with nature and live in the moment. Comporta has a rhythm and an ambience that are all it's own. This wild and unspoilt part of Portugal attracts an in-the-know international crowd, including renowned artists, designers, and A-listers.
Comporta has a remarkable diversity of natural systems with long stretches of beach, windswept dunes, scenic pine forests, salt marshes and rice paddies which become a vibrant green in June. The region is also characterized by rice fields and its main attraction, the Comporta beach: 20 kilometres of uninterrupted white sand, a beach lover’s paradise.
As with the rest of Portugal, you can expect sun-blessed weather year-round in Comporta. The best months of the year to visit Comporta for long beach stays are from June to September, while the spring and autumn months are still suitable for picnics or day trips.
