ABOUT THE DOURO
A symbol of Portugal’s birth and growth as a nation, the Douro has long been the country’s lifeline. Leaving the pastel-coloured metropolis of Porto, venture through the enchanting countryside.
Following the winding Douro river east from Porto reveals one of the most scenic drives in Europe and Portugal’s premier wine region, the Douro Valley. With terraces of vines lining the riverbanks, Douro Valley holidays offer stunning hiking trails, beautiful viewpoints and a wonderful selection of peaceful retreats.
In the Douro, you will find quiet towns and villages, vineyards hugging the bends, castles from the time of the Reconquest and other places worthy of a stop to look far into the horizon.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesThe Duoro region is a spectacular region for children to visit as it allows them to explore the local history and learn more about the exhilarating Portuguese culture. For example, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Remedies resides on the very top of Mount St. Stephen and gives guests an immersive look into Portugal’s deep religious history. This landmark is the main symbol within the city of Lamego, which is just 90-minutes away from the Duoro Valley. Guests are encouraged to climb over 600 steps to the very top of the monument in order to receive a set of spellbinding views of the area. During this journey, you will also come across a range of fountains, tiles, and other artefacts, all with their own rich and significant history.
When travelling to a new country, it is always a struggle to find the best way to see all of the much-loved tourist destinations. That’s why boat tours are extremely popular within Duoro, as they offer a unique way to explore the area. Institutions such as Douro Azul have been providing exquisite boat tours for years, allowing guests to travel along the amazing Duoro River in style. Their small-group tour travels from Porto and guides guests along the river over the course of 10 hours. This is a full-day tour that also includes a wine tasting experience and a complimentary lunch. This particular tour starts at around €80 per guest and can be booked online in advance for added convenience.
Duoro is also well known for its variety of intuitive museums, allowing children to experience the key moments across history in a fun and engaging way. The COA Museum and the corresponding Coa Archaeological Park are both located on Villa Nova de Foz Coa, which is just over an hour and a half away from the Duoro Valley. This museum presents a variety of rock art exhibitions from across the Palaeolithic era, helping to show integral these pieces are to the understanding of our modern societies. Tickets for this museum can be bought in an affordable bundle for just €25.60 per guest.
