Nestled in the heart of Portugal’s wine valley, Quinta do Quirino is Douro’s best-kept secret. Surrounded by vineyards that date all the way back to 1756, this tranquil property is in an area oozing with history, culture, and unique experiences.

Quinta do Quirino is part of a large estate, engulfed by lush vineyards that you are welcome to explore. The villa is split across two buildings, comprising of a large main house, and a self-contained studio.

In the main house, up to ten guests can sleep across five bedrooms, with four large bedrooms and one master suite. Despite the vast size, the unique design of the villa gives the property a cosy and welcoming feel, making you feel right at home in this nature-inspired estate.

The living and dining room includes a fully equipped kitchen that is ideal for entertaining, while an impressive fireplace gives the area a hint of its rustic roots. Step outside onto the balcony, and you’ll be treated to views of the vineyard, river Corgo, and surrounding valley. Is there a better place to enjoy your morning coffee?

You’ll find it hard to come across a property that has been more carefully designed and decorated than Quinta do Quirino. The fresh, open spaces seamlessly blend together a range of materials that elevate the natural feel of the countryside, inspired by organic living. The property owners have also used their local knowledge to handpick furnishings throughout the house, with many of the items being locally produced by nearby makers and artists. The end result is a home that evokes delicate simplicity, modernity and a tranquil way of life.

The same is true for the accompanying studio. Consisting of the main bedroom and living space, as well as another fully equipped kitchen, this area can sleep four additional guests (one double bed and one sofa bed). This extra attribute of the estate is great if you’re holidaying as part of a large group or with multiple families, the added privacy adding that extra special, considered touch.

Elsewhere on the grounds, a rustic wine cellar is available for your use when visiting out of the harvest season. During this time, the space can be transformed into a unique setting for events, parties, and other special gatherings. Immerse yourself in the local environment and organise a private workshop during your stay.

Outside, Quinta do Quirino boasts two beautiful balconies that offer incredible, unspoilt views, and a tranquil infinity pool deck too. The villa overlooks the valley, a UNESCO protected area, giving you the ultimate freedom to take in all that the Douro region has to offer.

Located in the UNESCO listed Douro Valley, Quinta do Quirino enjoys breathtaking views of the nearby vineyards and rolling hills. A peaceful area, the villa boasts a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of Portugal’s resort towns, while still being within easy reach of the area’s best and most exciting attractions.

For wine lovers, a stay in the Douro Valley is a must. Quinta do Quirino is just a short drive from Régua, which is the base of the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, regulated since 1756. Perhaps once best known for the famed Mateus rosé, it’s no surprise that wine tours through the unique landscape are the number one thing to do in this area.

Specifically focused on port wine, there are ample wineries and caves to choose from if a day spent vineyard hopping is on your to-do list during your villa holiday in Portugal.

Don’t worry if you spend most of your trip simply marvelling at the scenery - the Douro region is peppered with viewpoints that combine comfortable hikes with glorious views. Called ‘miradouros’, you’ll come across many of them when out and about exploring the area. We recommend checking out Miradouro de São Leonardo de Galafura and Miradouro de São Domingos.

If you want to rest your legs, hop on the Douro Historical Train, a beautiful heritage steam train that runs alongside the Douro River between June and October. Beginning close to Quinta do Quirino, in Régua, the three-hour round trip takes you through the hillside terraces to Tua, with a stop off at Pinhão along the way.

Pretty towns and villages almost make for perfect day trips when holidaying in the Douro Valley. Hire a car, and explore the likes of Lamego, a cathedral city that is wrapped in vineyards. Known for its sparkling wine, there are also caves for you to explore too.

Sitting just 10km from Quinta do Quirino is the city of Vila Real, home to spectacular noble mansions and steeped in royal history. Marvel at the baroque designs, before heading back in time to Vila Real Sé, a 15th Century Gothic cathedral.

Of course, you can’t visit this area of Portugal without sampling some of the traditional Portuguese dishes. The cuisine in the Douro region is largely inspired by the generations of families who worked in the hills, meaning the food is often made of simple, attainable ingredients. We recommend trying the feijoada à transmontana, a casserole with pork belly, pig’s trotters, chouriço and beans - a filling meal for a busy day spent in the Douro.

ABOUT THE DOURO

A symbol of Portugal’s birth and growth as a nation, the Douro has long been the country’s lifeline. Leaving the pastel-coloured metropolis of Porto, venture through the enchanting countryside.

Following the winding Douro river east from Porto reveals one of the most scenic drives in Europe and Portugal’s premier wine region, the Douro Valley. With terraces of vines lining the riverbanks, Douro Valley holidays offer stunning hiking trails, beautiful viewpoints and a wonderful selection of peaceful retreats.

In the Douro, you will find quiet towns and villages, vineyards hugging the bends, castles from the time of the Reconquest and other places worthy of a stop to look far into the horizon.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

With its huge size and separate, self-contained studio, Quinta do Quirino is a fantastic option for your family holiday in Portugal, especially if you are travelling in multiple groups.

Kids will more than take advantage of the pool and outside space, with the freedom to run and explore however much their hearts desire. Inside, the property has a television with Netflix, as well as multiple board games, children’s books, DVDs, and more. The large dining table will make family mealtimes even easier, too.

While the Douro region may be best known for its wines, there’s still much to see and do in the area that is suitable for children as well.

With many of the activities focused on immersing yourself in nature and getting to know the unique terrain if an action-packed holiday is what your kids are after, here is the place to be.

Hire a kayak or paddleboard for the day and navigate the Douro river - the calm, rippling waters make the area safe for all kind of water activities and perfect for smaller swimmers. Choose from planning your own route or taking part in an organised tour, with many companies in the region offering them.

A guided bike ride is also another great way to witness the landscape, and your kids will love whizzing through the terraced vineyards. Many of the local guides can meet you at your accommodation, and will expertly plan an exciting route for you and the little ones.

Just because you’re travelling with children doesn’t mean you need to forgo the must-see Douro wineries. Many of the vineyards are well accommodated for kids, with some (Quinta do Pôpa) offering special activity areas for them to enjoy while you experience the wines.

At the very least, the wineries are large and open - your kids will love running wild around the gardens. Bring a picnic and enjoy a classic family day out surrounded by peaceful beauty.

  • The house was beyond perfect

    on 28/04/2023

The house was beyond perfect and the pictures do not do it justice!
We were given so many helpful ideas and suggestions and the owner made my birthday everything I could have hoped for!
    Can’t wait to go back.

  • All was perfect

    on 30/11/2022

All was perfect. The place was amazing and the region also. We got the inhouse chef for a birthday and they were very good memories :) Just for those who don't know the area, the house is located on a secluded side of the Douro, amazing for those who want peace and quiet but mind that it's about an hour drive from the commercial places.

  • Absolutely amazing

    on 30/11/2022

The house is absolutely amazing. Everyone was happy and surprised. Location is breath-taking and all the recommendations were incredible.

  • Stop looking further!

    on 27/10/2022

    Stop looking further!
Magical villa in a beautiful area with everything you would need for a perfect vacation.

  • All perfect

    on 29/07/2022

We selected the space for our 10 year vow renewal and had 11 of our friends and family stay in the villa. It was perfect to serve all of our needs. The pool, the lounge area, the kitchens, everything was perfect. One of our favourite days was spent at the river in the little boat the owner provides. The villa is only 20 minutes from the grocery store.

  • Calm & peaceful

    on 27/04/2022

We had a wonderful experience at this magic place! It easily fits four families and children. Calm & peaceful is what you breathe there! The house is better than it looks in the pictures.

  • Amazing place

    on 21/07/2021

Amazing place. Beautiful nature and views. Far away from everything and silence. We enjoyed it.

  • Just spectacular!

    on 23/09/2020

Where to start... wow! Those 3 days at Quinta Do Quirino were just spectacular! The house, terrace, pool... everything was perfect. It was the most comfortable stay ever - the kitchen is well equipped, there were sunscreens, floaties, blankets, books, candles and great local wine... literally everything :)

  • Everything is amazing!

    on 01/03/2020

Everything about this stay has been amazing. The team goes above and beyond, the space is incredible, the views are breath-taking and the wine is heavenly. I almost DON'T want to recommend this place because I wish it could stay my little secret! Come here for an unforgettable experience and trust me, it's worth every penny and more.

  • Pictures don’t do this home justice

    on 24/08/2019

Pictures don’t do this home justice: Amazing hospitality, and a perfectly idyllic setting. We spent most days in the pool and walking down to the river for wading and skipping rocks. The beds are very comfortable and the house, while it looks like it is out of a magazine, is very kid friendly. Smaller toddlers might have problems with the stairs, but our four (ages 3 - 10) had absolutely no issues, even in the dark. 10 days went by way too fast.
The peace and solitude come at a price, so plan your grocery trips well since it was about 25 min or so to town. Fresh baked bread was delivered daily by Jose and we enjoyed the big Weber grill for most of our dinners.
