Sol Salema Townhouse is a lovely, modern two bedroom townhouse only steps away from the beautiful, golden Salema beach. The charming village of Salema’s cobbled roads are lined with quaint fishermen’s houses. Some of the fishermen’s houses are now lovely restaurants or have been revamped into modern accommodation. Salema is quiet and very picturesque. You can see fishermen unloading their catches and mending their nets each morning. It is situated between Sagres and Lagos. You will find a rural paradise here even in the school summer holidays. We really recommend trips into Sagres, Burgau and Lagos while you are there.
Sol Salema Townhouse combines the magical history of the village and contemporary Portuguese décor. Great care has been taken with the design and furnishings, including luxurious ‘Sampedro’ bed linen. It feels so harmonious and comfortable. On the first floor, there is a fabulous bedroom facing the sea with an en-suite shower room. On the second floor there another wonderful bedroom, again with huge windows so that you can wake up to the incredible views of the beach and Atlantic sea. Both of the bedrooms are very spacious with sofas looking out. There is another en-suite shower room and at the back of the house, a large kitchen and dining room.
The top floor terrace is marvellous, taking full advantage of the height and views. It is furnished beautifully with a dining table and chairs under a pergola, sunbeds and parasols. Such a fantastic place for drinks and dinner overlooking the sea! There is also a spacious indoor living area at the back of the house, but on sunny days the only place you will want to be is the terrace.
This is a great house for a family or two couples. It can sleep up to 5. Such a fantastic location, right on the beach!

What you should know
Take care on some of the beaches on the southwestern coast of the Algarve, as the waves can be a bit too much for small children!
Remember it is the Atlantic Ocean, so the sea is never particularly warm!

While much of the southern coastline of the Algarve has been built up, the far western end, which forms the Costa Vicenta Natural Park, remains unspoilt and is a protected area of natural beauty. Salema is one of those lovely spots, tranquil and unspoilt with storks nesting on telegraph poles and wildflowers in nearby fields. Early in the morning, you will see the fishermen unloading their octopus, sardines, sea bass and gilt-head bream. Quite often they will be putting a lick of paint on their boats.
The half-mile long, Praia de Salema is a Blue Flag beach with sugar-fine, golden sand. It is wonderful for swimming as it lacks the strong waves that surfers love. The crystal-clear water is so inviting and brings in a marvel of small seashells. In 2001, dinosaur footprints were discovered in the cliff face which fascinates many.
Just along from Praia de Salema is Praia das Cabanas Velhas. Cabanas, like Salema, is also a picturesque fishing village. The branch of the Ria Formosa that separates the Island of Cabanas from the mainland is quite narrow, and you can cross it by foot at low tide but otherwise by boat. It is very peaceful. You can sample the local oysters and clams picked in the nearby nurseries.
The other side of Cabanas is Burgau. So many visitors return to Burgau time and time again as it is so charming. You really need to explore on foot to fully appreciate this little gem. The labyrinth of narrow streets leads to the stunning beach. The whitewashed houses all lean crookedly against each other, the beach of fine sand backed by the rocks and the lovely Atlantic horizon all work their magic to create a wonderful feeling of tranquillity. By contrast, Lagos is where the action is in this part of the coast! Still beautiful, charming and historic, it is bustling with activity, nightlife and modern attractions. The beaches are beautiful. Many boat trips are available, including deep-sea fishing and yacht hire.
There are wonderful sunsets at Sagres. It faces extreme weather so go if you appreciate nature’s raw beauty. It has massive cliffs and vast beaches which are pounded by huge waves rolling in. Experienced surfers are drawn to Sagres.

The Region
Salema and its picturesque surroundings are full of hidden gems and old school charm, making it the perfect coastal escape from your busy everyday life. This endlessly charming little fishing village in western Algarve has it all: locally sourced seafood, kid-friendly beaches and a fabulous location just outside the National Park of Southwest Alentejo, in an area of unspoilt natural beauty completely different from that on the other end of the coast.
In the marina you can still spot local fishermen taking out their colourful little boats in the morning, and wandering around town you’ll come across great and homely restaurants where you can feast on their catch.
After a few long afternoons lounging on the secluded beaches, swimming in the sea and trying your windsurfing skills, you’ll learn that there isn’t much to do in Salema but taking it easy, and that’s just the way we like it.
